2021-02-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are the best prospects that will get a look in 2021?
(Tyler from Vancouver)
Many will get a look, some earlier than others. Obviously, players who debuted last year will be back, including Nick Madrigal, Dylan Carlson, Sixto Sanchez, Randy Arozarena, Ian Anderson, Ryan Mountcastle, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Daulton Varsho, etc. Another top-prospect early 2021 debut likely is Andrew Vaughn. Otherwise, our ETAs should help guide the search for potential 2021 impact players, though some likely will not debut until well after the All-Star break (Wander Franco, Jarred Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez, etc.). (Jesse Roche)
2020-04-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Daulton Varsho more of a high end super utility type more than an everyday player or will his bat push him into an everyday player somewhere? Part II - if he loses catcher eligibility how valuable of a prospect does he become? Thanks.
(CubbieBear from Chi-Town)
I think Varsho hits enough for an everyday role, whether at catcher or in the outfield. Late in 2019, he began seeing time in center field. Given the presence of Carson Kelly and Varsho's so-so defense and arm strength behind the dish, Varsho very well may be destined for the outfield.

If Varsho becomes an everyday outfielder, losing catcher eligibility in the process, he likely retains much of the same fantasy value. Catcher eligibility benefits fringe fantasy performers more than superb hitters. A player like Varsho would receive less plate appearance and likely run less as a catcher. In addition, he likely would produce less per plate appearance simply due to the physical strain of catching. Meanwhile, in the outfield, he should be healthier, more spry, and have a better shot at making good on his 20/20 offensive potential. As such, I am less concerned about a player like Varsho losing catcher eligibility, than, say, Zach Collins.

The realistic ideal scenario is Varsho plays close to everyday in left field with enough starts at catcher (3rd stringer likely) to retain eligibility there year-to-year, or at least gain eligibility in-season. He could conceivably be that rare, super-valuable catcher-eligible position player who plays 6 times/week. At the same time, he would not suffer the same wear-and-tear that catching a ton of games has on a player. Consquently, Varsho likely will run more, perform better, and provide potentially massive fantasy value. (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know all will be revealed soon in your Dynasty list, but I’m in a bit of a conundrum with Griffin Canning in a keeper league. Considering the current state of his elbow but also his secure rotation spot, where would you place Canning among this batch of pitching prospects?
(Monty from Chapel Hill)
We have Canning between Ian Anderson (69) and Daulton Varsho (70), though I would not oppose ranking him behind, say, Daniel Lynch (83). The elbow injury is concerning, but we are withholding a more significant drop at the moment. (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a dynasty context, would you take a player like Mason Martin over Ivan Herrera? Herrera has joined some top 100s IRL, but I'm unsure how to treat him in fantasy.
(Niels from Massachusetts)
Yes, I prefer Martin. Catching prospects carry so much risk and catchers, in general, simply provide little fantasy impact. You should fade all catching prospects in dynasty relative to their IRL rank (except maybe Daulton Varsho). (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Luis Campusano or Daulton Varsho for dynasty league? Thanks!
(Bubic Hair from In your soup)
Daulton Varsho easy. Five-category "catcher"? Sign me up!

Not sure he will be a catcher, though, so if that is really important then you should probably go with Campusano. I still think Varsho will generate solid (and better) fantasy value than Campusano regardless what position he ends up playing. (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-16 12:00:00 (link to chat)Of the following hitters, how would you rank their 2020 MLB impact: Ke'Bryan Hayes, Jazz Chisholm, Alec Bohm, Daulton Varsho, Monte Harrison, Jesus Sanchez?
(Craig from Chicago)
I am curious to see how service time stuff plays out in a shortened season because that's gonna play into this, but assuming somewhat normal service resumed: Bohm, Hays, Harrison, Sanchez, Chisholm, Varsho. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ok I got one more. How do you have these ranked. K Robinson, D Carlson, M Luciano, CJ Abrams, D Varsho, S Howard, and J Gray. Thanks.
(sykklone from IA)
I could refer you to the dynasty 101, but it was a collaboration so my valuations are a bit different. I rank them as follows: Marco Luciano / Kristian Robinson / Dylan Carlson, small gap, CJ Abrams, gap, Spencer Howard, gap, Daulton Varsho / Josiah Gray (Jesse Roche)
2020-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are your favorite young catchers after Rutschman for dynasty purposes?
(Jordan from Milwaukee)
I could just point to our Top 101 and our Top 40 catchers, but where is the fun in that? After Rutschman, my rankings are:
2. Joey Bart
3. Daulton Varsho
4. Sean Murphy
5. Luis Campusano
6. Francisco Alvarez
7. Keibert Ruiz
8. Zack Collins
9. Diego Cartaya
10. Tyler Stephenson
11. Ivan Herrera
12. Miguel Amaya
13. Sam Huff
14. Andrew Knizner
15. Ryan Jeffers
16. William Contreras
17. Alejandro Kirk
18. Gabriel Moreno
19. Ronaldo Hernandez
20. Cal Raleigh
21. Bo Naylor
22. Mario Feliciano
23. Shea Langeliers
24. Connor Wong
25. Korey Lee (Jesse Roche)
2019-12-13 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Daulton Varsho really a catcher? If not, what position might he realistically play and how much does that diminish his outlook as an impact player?
(AndersonAdams1 from Roswell, GA)
He's not a disaster there, it's just a bit rough at present and even with refinement, teams are going to have their individual tolerance for these kinds of defensive profiles. There's also a bunch of soft skills to bake in behind the plate that don't come out in our framing metrics. That's all to say it isn't as binary as yes/no, he's in a large maybe bucket that encompasses a lot of catching prospects. He actually legit might be athletic enough for a third base or corner outfield spot, and he's played there some in college and summer leagues. (Arizona Diamondbacks Top 10 Chat)
2019-07-31 12:00:00 (link to chat)I picked up before the season Daulton Varsho, hoping for a breakout. He seems to be doing steady but nothing too special. Am I being too critical or should I just remember catchers take longer to develop?
(Mike from Air)
He's really doing quite well. The Southern League is not an easy place to hit, especially for power and he's doing a good job of that as a 22-year-old in his first taste of it. Hold the course. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-06-07 12:00:00 (link to chat)Only have a spot for one in a dynasty. Contention window 2-3 years out. George Valera, Alek Thomas, Dylan Carlson, Jazz Chisholm, Keibert Ruiz, Daulton Varsho, Nolan Jones, Trevor Larnach, Xavier Edwards, Shane Baz, Michel Baez, Or Seth Beer. Also, I wish I had 10 more roster spots
(KJ from Providence)
I'd probably go with Carlson or Larnach. Keibert is the best pure prospect here, but also might not be a huge fantasy factor. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-05-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Keibert Ruiz or Daulton Varsho in a Dynasty? Contention window is 2-3 years out.
(Peter E. from Durham, NC)
Man, this is a difficult question. Varsho will have sneaky fantasy value because he might swipe double-digit bags, not unlike J.T. Realmuto. I'll probably side with Ruiz if you're not expecting to compete for a couple of years. Ruiz could be an elite all-around catcher. Varsho's skills with the bat are more actualized, which would be attractive to someone who has the dynasty squad to compete over the next couple of years. (J.P. Breen)
2018-04-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see productive MLB careers behind the dish for Daulton Varsho and Carson Kelly? Preference and why?
(GBdontgivea%&^$ from Wisconsin)
Varsho seems to profile as a much better bat, but he allegedly has a weak arm. Kelly seems to have the arm to stay behind the plate, but his bat is weaker. My guess is that Varsho gets moved to somewhere else. So if you definitely need a catcher, Kelly is your guy, but Varsho's bat is my preference. (Kevin Jebens)
