2018 The Reds' second-round pick, Jeter Downs will look back fondly at how things turned out if he can put together a career comparable to his namesake's down years.

2021-01-21 12:00:00 (link to chat)Jeter Downs. I am surprised he did not make it given he actually has an extensive professional track record for you to evaluate. Any noteworthy flaws that kept him off the list? thanks
(uncasf1 from Raleigh)
He will also be on tomorrow's Just Missed list, but the short of it is we think he's probably a second baseman and we worry the approach will limit his hit tool at higher levels. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2021-01-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Of these prospects, who is most likely to get significant MLB playing time in 2021? Jarren Duran, Kyle Isbel, Jeter Downs, or Luis Barrera. Thanks.
(Old timer from Raleigh)
Royals seem to be the most willing to play the prospects. I expect once you manipulate Nick Pivetta's service time, you will do the same with Downs and Durran. Barrera doesn't really strike me as a starter once he's up, but it's the A's so who knows. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-04-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Both Jeter Downs and Vidal Brujan went very early in the fantasy experts prospect mock draft, too early imo. I assume this is due in part to their steal potential. Given the lack of steals at the MLB level, is it time to get rid of steals as a stand alone fantasy category?
(Old Timer from Raleigh NC)
I agree both Brujan (16) and Downs (34) went a touch too early for my tastes, but neither stood out as a massive overdraft to me. Obviously, the majority of Brujan's fantasy value is tied to his speed and potential for big stolen-base numbers. Downs, on the other hand, carries more value in his hit/power combo than his legs. Still, he could chip in 10-15 steals at peak despite his more modest raw foot speed.

Steals are certainly in steep decline. Just last year, the average MLB hitter only stole ~7 bases over 600 PAs (versus 21.8 homers).

There are many different fantasy leagues, some of which devalue stolen bases. Steals are less valuable in simulation-based leagues such as Scoresheet or Benchwarmer Baseball. Steals are also less valuable in points formats or even leagues with more categories. However, steals remain a vital, valuable part of most traditional 5x5 formats. Personally, I enjoy value being tied to stolen bases and their increasing rarity. If you are opposed to stolen bases carrying so much value, you can always set up your new league to more properly value the stat. For now, however, I do not see stolen bases going anywhere. Who doesn't like a good swiped bag?! (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty keeper league. I am likely to have a choice of Jeter Downs, Orelvis Martinez, or Noelvi Marte with my first pick. Do you have any particular preference and why? Thanks.
(Old Timer from Raleigh NC)
Dynasty and keeper are different things normally. If you can keep nearly your entire roster forever, then it is dynasty. If you have a strict keeper limit, even if you can keep forever, it is keeper. The difference matters because opportunity cost is something that must be considered when talking players like Orelvis Martinez and Noelvi Marte who are a ways away.

Regardless, none are bad picks, but I am partial to Marte as a potential 5-category star who could be a top-10 dynasty prospect by year's end if everything goes according to plan. (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your ceiling projection for Jeter Downs?
(Mahonri from OC )
Downs missed the Ceiling-Only Top 101 mainly due to his Potential Earnings of $15-20 (which I tried to push to $20-25 to no avail). I see his ceiling as something like .265/25/15. He just has 50/55 raw power but he puts the ball in the air so much (53%) that he maximizes that pop. His speed also plays up due to instincts. Average speedsters can net ~15 stolen bases on moxie and savvy alone. (Jesse Roche)
2019-10-30 16:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Craig, I'm still not talking to you, but what *realistically* would be an acceptable Lindor trade package? I'm fully prepared for it to be more underwhelming than it should be. To steal from a wildly successful and rollicking podcast, Thanks, I Hate It.
(Mark from The Bad Place)
Okay, so this is picking up on a rumor that Jon Morosi was peddling that may or may not be related to what I wrote in my Dodgers 2020 Hindsight piece. Morosi, stop stealing my bits for news! Anyway, the Dodgers are interested in Lindor and I think there are two ways for Cleveland to go about it from them. One involves Corey Seager as a centerpiece. What he gives you now is the same two years of team control as Lindor, a lower ceiling (but not THAT much, he was a 5+ win player in recent memory), and lower overall cost than Lindor. I think you fill that out with maybe one other significant prospect -- Keibert Ruiz might make some sense with the ascendance of Will Smith and Ruiz's down-ish year, plus maybe a DJ Peters type? Maybe a flier like Gerardo Carrillo (one of my fav arms in that system).

If you're not going with Seager I think you look to start with May or Lux and go from there. I don't know that you get 2/3 of them and Ruiz, but you might be able to pry Jeter Downs as a future shortstop type if you're not getting Lux. The Dodgers haven't tended to part with guys that are part of the current team so I don't know if May/Lux is feasible, but you could also chase an Alex Verdugo, potentially since the team is deep in outfielders. Could also work a throw in like an Edwin Rios, who flashed briefly. Rios types aren't major additions to the deal but he's ready now-ish and could contribute as a DH/1B type. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-08-28 12:00:00 (link to chat)What does Jeter Downs's upside look like? Could he be a first-division SS?
(Slippery Pete from The deep)
That feels a bit lofty for me, although Brandon but an OFP 55 on him earlier this year. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=549 (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-07-31 12:00:00 (link to chat)Recently got Jeter Downs probably because of the great first name. With the great first name aside what should we be expecting from him as a prospect?
(David from Atlantis)
I'm not his biggest fan. A slew of average to above-average tools but nothing that really pops. I like to see a carrying tool, personally, so this does fall into the category of guy I underrate. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-04-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)How freaking good is Josiah Gray? What a steal for my beloved Dodgers!
(Sandra from Hollywood)
I like Josiah Gray, maybe a little too much. I think I stated I preferred him to Jeter Downs at the time of the deal. That might be stating things a little too much, that said I don't think trading Puig, Wood, and Kemp for Homer Bailey's contract and prospects on the tier of Gray or Downs can be qualified a steal in any sense. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-02-06 21:00:00 (link to chat)Did any of the following get consideration or should they be rostered in leagues that hold around 175 prospects? Julio Rodriguez, Mark vientos, Monte Harrison Jeter Downs, Josh Naylor
(Charlie from San Jose)
Naylor got semi-serious top 101 consideration, and I threw Harrison into the HM. Vientos and Downs are fine top 175 names as well. Idk which Julio Rodriguez you mean! - BC (Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre)
