2018 There’s no way to comb over the troubles Groome had in 2017. The 12th overall pick in 2016 was already currying favors with scouts headed into the season, ranking as one of the best left-handed prospects in baseball. But while he was expected to clean up in the low minors, injuries stymied his first full professional season. Groome missed time early in the year with a lat injury, and was then shut down for good in August with a left forearm strain. It’s tempting to brush away those concerns because Groome did not end up needing Tommy John surgery, and when on the mound, he flashed future top-of-the-rotation stuff. You hate to hear about elbow issues with any potential stud, though, and Groome’s walk rate reveals that he’s not yet the most stable man when it comes to command and control. Also, it’s pronounced “Grom,” but what were we going to do with that?
2017 Many scouts thought Groome was the best man in the 2016 draft, but he fell to the Red Sox at no. 12 overall due to signability concerns (commitment issues) and whispers about his makeup (rumors he wasn’t made of honor). A big, powerful lefty, Groome marries his mid-90s heat with an advanced curveball that hitters find tough to engage. He boasts a repeatable delivery that the Sox shouldn’t have to altar, and his scouting reports are bursting with unbride-eled enthusiasm. It's easy to fall in love with Groome, who is already one of the best southpaw prospects in the game. A few years down the line, perhaps he’ll be the latest Red Sox ring-bearer. Also, it’s pronounced “Grom,” but what were we going to do with that?

2020-03-02 12:00:00 (link to chat)Sox lefty Jay Groome is coming off TJS and I think he's in a make it or break it season. What do you think he does this year? Is it realistic to project him as a TOR arm? Thanks!
(KC from Somwhere near Boston.)
Make or break might be a bit strong, but I believe the golf term would be "moving day." He looked good when I caught him on rehab late in the year, but we really won't know anything until he starts taking the ball regularly and working deep into games which was a problem even before the TJ. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-11-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've been offered Jay Groome a bunch of times in my dynasty league but have been passing to this point on account of him sucking.
(Mike from Baltimore)
I mean, I wouldn't buy him in a fantasy league outside of a buy-low scenario until he shows upon healthy for a bit, but also I don't give a shit about fantasy stuff when I make these lists. (Boston Red Sox Top 10 Chat)
2017-09-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rank these pitchers and if you keep two who do keep: Mitch Keller, Triston McKenzie, Chance Adams, Sixto Sanchez, Jason Groome? Thanks JP
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Based on my very limited expertise in fantasy/prospect stuff: Sixto, Keller, Groome, McKenzie, Adams. Keep an eye on Groome's injury, though. Keep Sixto and Keller. (Nicolas Stellini)
2017-07-06 12:00:00 (link to chat)A few weeks ago, I traded Jason Groome for Kyle Wright, thinking both have high upsides but that Wright could get there a lot sooner. How do you think I did there?
(Ben from MA)
May have sold a little early on Groome, but I think you did all right. I don't know if Wright's upside is quite there though. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-05-22 23:00:00 (link to chat)Jason Groome ______ 😱 A) has fallen into the same bottomless pit Ozzie Smith did in the Simpsons. B) was abducted by Ego. C) is in the next episode of unsolved mysteries. D) The son of Waldo and Carmen San Diego.
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Nah, while any of those things would be infinitely more exciting, he's just hurt. Strained his lat at the beginning of the month, unclear how long the shelf living'll be: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=31758 (Wilson Karaman)
2017-05-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sixto Sanchez or Jason Groome (and why). Go!
(Ryan from ME)
I think I have officially gone ride or die with Sixto. Part of this is gonna be due to Groome's mysterious whatever that has put him on the DL. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any updates on Jason Groome? Are the Sox being overly cautious with him?
(Dave from Des Moines)
I mean I would be too. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-03-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Better dynasty league option to draft: Yadier Alvarez or Jason Groome?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
We ranked Alvarez slightly higher on the real 101 but Groome slightly higher on the dynasty 101. I guess I'll go with Bret and Ben in that I think Groome has a higher probability to stick in the rotation and I think that's something that really matters for y'all. (Jarrett Seidler)
2017-03-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat Jarrett. Was wondering if there was a certain type of player or tool that you just like. Example, some scouts of BP are drawn to Dominican SS, others really like really good change up. What's your poison.
(Jerry from Earth)
Lefties with a beautiful two-plane curve. So suffice to saw I am also the staff's high man on Jason Groome. (Jarrett Seidler)
2017-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bret Sayre ranked Nick Senzel, Corey Ray, Zach Collins, Jason Groome, & Mickey Moniak as his Top 5 Dynasty Signees from 2016. Do you agree with this, or have a different viewpoint?
(Ron from Texarkana)
I think I prefer Lewis to Moniak, but totally reasonable to prefer Moniak until there's more clarity on how Lewis looks now. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-01-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)For dynasty purposes, who would you rather have as a prospect, Jason Groome or Anderson Espinoza? What the greatest reason that sticks out to you?
(Ron from Texarkana)
Off the top of my head I was going to say Espinoza, mostly for proximity, but then I looked and saw Groome got a little taste of Low-A last season, so they're not that far apart. I think they both could be special, but I'll take Groome and bet on the frame. (Mark Barry)
