DateQuestionAnswer
2020-12-04 12:00:00 (link to chat)Forrest Whitley: Do you see him in the rotation or bullpen long term?
(Mike Wilson from Rhode Island)
The Astros list runs Monday and I wish I had a good answer for this. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-09-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)who are some starting pitchers you would target in a k/9 dynasty?
(Huey from Providence)
Tyler Glasnow, Nate Pearson, Dinelson Lamet, Corbin Burnes, Deivi Garcia, Forrest Whitley, and Matt Manning (though we are lower than most on Manning) (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Give me the names of top prospects who are going to come up this year?
(Charlie from Atlanta)
The list is extensive. Here are top-50 prospects who likely will be in the majors at some point in 2020: Jo Adell, Gavin Lux, Luis Robert, MacKenzie Gore, Carter Kieboom, Dylan Carlson, Nick Madrigal, Jesus Luzardo, Dustin May, Brendan Rodgers, Nate Pearson, Casey Mize, Forrest Whitley, Alec Bohm, Cristian Pache, Ryan Mountcastle, Spencer Howard, and Matt Manning. There are obviously others, and even more who will surprise, but I'd wager these prospects will arrive at some point. (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your general approach to pitching in a 12-team roto dynasty startup assuming the minor league draft is already out of the way? Thinking X pitchers by Y round What is your dynasty startup approach in general? Are you all in it to win early championships, draft young and try to build a super team, or thread the needle and take the middle ground?
(MK from Houston)
I normally avoid pitching early in dynasty startups. Pitching is risky and deep, especially in 12-team formats. My strategy varies league-to-league, but I tend to aim to capture 27-or-younger value throughout with a preference for 25-or-younger. I do not employ the tanking strategy that some do. I want to always be competitive while building my farm through waivers and the draft. My goal is to try to always win, though maybe not in year 1 unless things fall right. For example, my first 7 picks in P365XDL this offseason were: Trevor Story (27), Jose Ramirez (27), Josh Bell (27), Mike Soroka (22), Gary Sanchez (27), Josh Hader (26), and Forrest Whitley (22). If I had to do it over again, I may have done things a bit differently, but my team is in a position to win and be competitive over many years. You can see the draft results here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oOr5RHFObDBt6fZPegvhLW5EDie7XYXYu4OvAMDoRp0/edit?usp=sharing (Jesse Roche)
2019-07-19 12:00:00 (link to chat)Forrest Whitley for Thor, who says no? Gives the Astros a “sure thing” front line starter for a few seasons if Cole leaves. Mets get a close to the majors top of the rotation arm.
(Matt from Boston)
Probably the Mets for a couple reasons. One Whitely's meds are worrisome, and two they are going to want to use Syndergaard to fill "multiple holes" even if the individual pieces coming back aren't as good as Whitley. And before you ask, no we aren't doing phrasing anymore. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-06-12 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Nate Pearson the best pitching prospect in the upper minors? What is his major league ETA?
(Dodo from The ground)
His 24 2/3 innings this year are already a career-high as a pro, so I'm very not ready to make that proclamation, but he's certainly impressive. With Forrest Whitley having some issues, there are questions in that "upper minors" group, but I'd still lean toward the greater certainty of A's lefty Jesus Luzardo or perhaps even prized Marlins acquisition Sixto Sanchez ... (Zach Crizer)
2019-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in my fourth year of a dynasty league. Earlier this season, I was third in points for a week. It was the highest I've ever been in the standings. Anyway, should I trade Forrest Whitley? I was banking on him being better than prime Kershaw to finally get over the hump.
(Elton from Pacific Northwest)
Congrats on your brief foray into relevancy. That is not a good thing to bank on. No, trading guys at their nadir isn't usually an advisable strategy. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-05-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a dynasty league and my hitting is stacked but my pitching stinks. Which pitching prospects can you think of thatd be worth trading Taylor Trammell for straight up?
(Kyle from Seattle)
I consulted Bret Sayre regarding this and he said "none. None pitching prospects." I think by that he means go get an established guy who can help you immediately, not trade a safer bat type for a riskier pitching type. If you need it to be a prospect, the answer is probably Forrest Whitley, but even then... (Craig Goldstein)
2019-04-12 16:00:00 (link to chat)12 team, Roto, 5x5, dynasty keeper (no penalty for keepers)... Who wins: Carlos Correa, Sandy Alcantara for Al Mondesi, Forrest Whitley. Thanks!
(James from New Hampshire)
I think we're looking at the very real possibility that Mondesi is a better fantasy option than Correa, and Whitley is so far ahead of Alcantara for me that Mondesi doesn't have to beat Correa. (Darius Austin)
2019-03-15 16:00:00 (link to chat)Any rookie starting pitchers catch your eye for big league success this year?
(Buddy from Peoria, IL)
I'm trying to grab Jesus Luzardo wherever I can. I think we'll hear from both Forrest Whitley and Joshua James in Houston. Mitch Keller is also a good one, even if there isn't as much upside. (Mark Barry)
2019-02-06 21:00:00 (link to chat)I am rebuilding in a dynasty league and the core of my team is made up of Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Bichette, Adell, Huira, Luzardo, Walker Buehler, Flaherty and Jameson Tallion. Some prospects that I have that are further away are Kelenic, Swaggerty, Hoerner, Oneill Cruz, Bryse Wilson, Eric Pardinho, Graterol, and Corbin Martin. From a roster construction stand point, would you trade Keston Huira for Forrest Whitley because I seem to have more hitting depth and Whitley has a shot to be an ace or would you keep Huira because pitchers are hurt so often and hitters tend to last a decade? Muchas Gracias. I will save you some rings.
(Sonic Not the Hedgehog from Eating Rings Somewhere)
I would not make that trade. If you're rebuilding, there's no reason to push in for pitchers until you're ready to turn the corner. -BS (Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre)
2019-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Since your Brew Crew list isn't out yet, can you share thoughts on Keston Hiura? BA cited "best 2B in baseball" upside - are you guys similarly high on him?
(David from Atlanta, GA)
We ranked him sixth on the national list, in between Victor Robles and Forrest Whitley, and he's getting written as a 7/6 on the Brewers list, probably low risk. So yep. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-12-05 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who is going to be this year’s Acuna/Buehler?
(tallahassee from Chatham, NJ)
I deeply loathe these questions. Can't we just let guys be themselves, rather than trying to make them fit into a particular box? These are two very special young players, and I'm not certain anyone who comes up in 2019 is going to fit the mold of "incredible young, well-rounded up-the-middle-superstar" outfielder or "here's my fastball, fuck you" starting pitcher. Maybe Forrest Whitley could perform as well as Buehler, but I'm not sure he'd get there in the same way. And I wouldn't put any position player prospect in baseball next to Acuna ... but Jo Adell probably comes closest. (Bryan Grosnick)
2018-06-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is a good arm to target in a dynasty league? I have lots of assets but need to invest wisely.
(Preston from Portland)
If you just want the best dynasty arm, target Forrest Whitley or Sixto. If you want a guy that might be undervalued at present, target Paddock or Cease. If you have some time and don't mind risk, MacKenzie Gore or Graterol. If you want safe value, well, don't invest in pitching prospects, but Keller or McKenzie. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-05-25 12:15:00 (link to chat)What do you expect from Forrest Whitley when he resumes pitching? You think he sees the majors this year?
(jmor1717 from Chicago)
Studliness. I think the biggest loss with Whitley's suspension was the decreased likelihood we see him this year. It's not out of the question but it's also not like the 'stros need him and he's not on their 40-man, so that's another hurdle to overcome in this respect. I'd anticipate 2019 as more likely. (Craig Goldstein)
2017-11-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any of these pitchers as likely to be a #1: Michael Baez, Mitch Keller, Forrest Whitley, Mackenzie Gore, Michael Fulmer, Justus Sheffield. Which ones? I’ve got them listed in my draft order . What do you think?
(temple from Madison WI)
I'd probably drop Baez behind the first two (and we have people that lurrrrrve Gore internally as well), but I also maybe wouldn't argue he has the best chance to be a #1 there. You could also argue Fulmer is actually the closest to *being* a 1, and you would of course be right, but his elbow situation is worrisome. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-09-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do we know Forrest Whitley isn't just Tyler Glasnow 2.0?
(Cal Guy from Cal)
I mean, we don't, but I also wouldn't call Glasnow a bust yet. Way too soon. (Nicolas Stellini)
2017-09-07 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Forrest Whitley a top 5 pitcher in the minors going into next season?
(Jim from New York )
Looks like he will. He has been very impressive. (Scooter Hotz)
2017-07-06 12:00:00 (link to chat)Riley Pint over Forrest Whitley?
(Jimmy from Delaware )
We spent a decent chunk of last night arguing about that last tier of pitchers. Because while at that point the order doesn't reeeeeeally matter, this is the kind of shit we care about too much. Ultimately more ceiling for Pint and a bigger fastball, but we like both a lot. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
