2018 Neuse is a beefy third baseman the A's acquired from Washington in the Sean Doolittle/Ryan Madson trade last summer. He's a better defender than you'd think by simply looking at him, especially if you only see a headshot: Like so many of us, he suffers from Really Large Face Syndrome. It's not clear where he'd play given the A's current and future infield, but there's time for that to sort itself out; while he reached Double-A last year, he'll have to perform for a full season in the high minors before the A's start shifting the puzzle pieces around to slot him in. There's reason for optimism, though, specifically in the above-average bat speed that should let him hit enough to reach the majors.
2017 The Nats tabbed Sheldon Neuse in the second round after a breakout offensive season at Oklahoma, though despite the suggestion of his moniker the bat profiles as more of an average asset.

2019-10-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who of these relatively unheralded, defense-limited sluggers do you think has best chance to be an impact player in majors: Jared Walsh, Jaylin Davis, Sheldon Neuse, Pavin Smith, Luken Baker? I'm trying to predict an Aquino-like jump.
(Josh from NYC)
I'm encouraged but the jump Smith has made, getting more balls in the air. His problem was always a flat bat path, to my eye. Second choice would be Davis. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-08-30 16:00:00 (link to chat)I have two spots on the end of my bench to stash roto keepers for 2020. Who do you like out of Clint Frazier, Mike Tauchman, Trent Grisham, Seth Brown, and Sheldon Neuse?
(Mason from Kansas)
Well, first of all I'm going to fade the A's a little bit--their collective AAA numbers in Vegas this year are insane. I think I have to go Tauchman, Grisham, and then Frazier. Frazier would be first but I don't know that Tauchman hasn't passed him in the Yankees OF pecking order. Dude just rakes. You could use the other spot on Frazier to hedge that lineup spot, which is probably what I'd do. I like Grisham, but there's still plenty of uncertainty there. (Jon Hegglund)
2018-06-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sheldon Neuse has had a terrible season at AAA so far. Moreover, during his brief stint in AA last year, he showed no power. How much of a prospect is he? Does he project as a starter or is he more of a fringe guy?
(John from Harrisonburg)
Greg, not Craig, Goldstein liked him a fair bit last year, but he's always been more of a fringe dude for me. This is the first time he hasn't really hit though, so giving him some consolidation time given how fast he moved last year seems reasonable. I don't know if there is much more than a second-division reward at the end of the rainbow here though. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-06-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)The top 10 current prospects Mike Rizzo has traded away are the ____th best top 10 in baseball. A list for you to choose from: Jesus Luzardo, Sheldon Neuse, Dane Dunning, Taylor Hearn, Blake Perkins, Kelvin Gutierrez, Yohanse Morel, Tyler Watson, McKenzie Mills, Pedro Avila, Max Schrock, and Travis Ott.
(Andrew from Boston)
It's a decent top three in Jesus Lizard, Dunning, Hearn, but it drops off pretty quickly. Bottom five, better than the Mariners and the Giants off the top of my head. Rizzo gets a bit underrated as a GM still I think. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-04-05 20:00:00 (link to chat)If you were the A's what positions do you put Franklin Barreto, Jorge Mateo, and Sheldon Neuse? Third base is blocked with Matt Chapman. Are any of them better shortstops, defensively, than Marcus Semien? And the A's seem intent on using Dustin Fowler in centerfield once healthy.
(Ken from Fairfax)
Barreto second base, Mateo center field and Neuse first base. They're going to need to make some trades or see some injuries but these things have a way of working themselves out. (Mike Gianella)
2018-05-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Jorge Mateo, Franklin Barreto, and Sheldon Neuse all knocking at the door of the majors, what should the A's do with them? Matt Chapman is ensconced at 3B. The A's aren't giving Barreto or Mateo reps in center despite the fact Dustin Fowler is at best a tick below average defensively there. And it isn't clear Mateo or Barreto would be better than Marcus Semien at shortstop. They can't all play second base...
(John from Harrisonburg)
So this is a good problem for a team to have. Talent logjams have a way of clearing up. Remember when the Cubs had Too Many Shortstops? The thing about some of these guys is that some of them simply wind up being not that great, and you can trade people for stuff too. I mean, is Neuse really threatening to unseat anyone right now? Barreto will work his way into the lineup somehow. Part of the reason some of these guys are still in Triple-A is that Jed Lowrie has been playing his ass off, but he's a free agent after this year. Patience, grasshopper. (Nicolas Stellini)
2017-07-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the return the A's got for Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle? Jesus Luzardo seems like a great addition, though, the history of TJ surgery is always troubling (and he's so young). While I'm not sure where Sheldon Neuse fits with Matt Chapman just breaking into the big leagues.
(Mark from Palo Alto)
luzardo is a pretty good selection, arm is as you said troubling. We will see how it holds up.
I don't know what Neuse really is, but if he is an average 3B defensively with pop and luzardo is healthy, it is a good haul for two relievers. (Javier Barragan)
