Let Figgins lead off (yes, I know his OBP is crappy for a lead-off guy). But, when he IS on-base, having a guy like Ichiro (with his bat control and contact ability) up next could allow the Mariners to do some creative things. His doubles power coupled with Figgins' speed could also allow him to drive in a few runs before the 'heart of the lineup' comes up. I just don't know if Ichiro would be horribly insulted by a drop in the lineup. However, desperate times call for desperate measures. Look, you've got a team which last year had the worst offense in the last 40 years, and they batted Ichiro first and Figgins second 157 times, so there's not a whole lot to lose by trying Plan B. The problem is that the Mariners have offensive sinkholes at so many other positions, and so little power to utilize towards a short-sequence offense. Thanks. (GC from Confuseville) | Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I understand it, the salaries involved in an NBA trade need to be within about 15% of each other. You can't trade a $24 million player for a $4 million. So an expiring contract would make the salaries involved match, or come close to it, and then the team GETTING the expiring contract player doesn't re-sign him in the off-season. So if I trade you a $24 million player for a $8 million and a $16 million expiring contract, I just effectively dumped $24 million. (dianagramr from NYC) | You're not the only one to suggest Nady for a Texas catcher, but I figure the Rangers would say, "Big hat, no cattle." They're going to get better offers, even for Laird, who is a good defender but not much of a hitter (IE a pretty good dictionary picture of a reserve catcher). Again, the problem with Nady is that he's just a stopgap as a starter in an outfield corner... Milton Bradley was probably the best pure hitter in the AL this year. I have no idea where he'll go. I'm sure plenty of people would welcome signing him to an especially creative, incentive-laden deal, but I expect he's self-aware enough and go for the guaranteed money. While he'd be the kind of player the Angels could use, I think that's only after the Teixeira scenario plays out; if LAnaheim tries to keep either Tex or K-Rod but loses both, all sorts of things become possible. (Or from Dallas) | It's going to take a gambling man in a suit to make a deal for Bradley, because as this year's chase after an announcer demonstrates, the guy's fuse is so short he's more dangerous than Roy Scheider's cargo in "Sorcerer." I can't help but make a comparison to Tony Phillips, another valuable player who frightened some of his employers, because they're also both fragile. Like Phillips, Bradley could rip off a number of great seasons and make people ignore the other stuff for a while; for his sake, I hope he does so. But there's a pretty small group of people willing to take the chance, and you can bet that they're also less willing to put up a lot of talent to take a shot at it.
Padilla's more interesting in terms of what he might bring in return, in that he might be seen as a solution for this year and next at roughly market pricing (his 2010 option can be bought out), giving his new team a mid-rotation starter without their having to risk making a Pavano- or Eaton-sized mistake. (Mike from Chicago) | It's funny b/c the one thing that is frustrating is that every once in a while a player will get upset with something I said but they didn't actually hear it. It's always the wives, friends or parents that hear it and they don't always remember it correctly. Now obviously, that wasn't the case with Milton. There's nothing that will annoy me more than when a player says "I heard what you guys said last night" and my response always is "No, you need to let me know who said what and then we can have the discussion". For example, last year I came in to the visiting clubhouse and was told Russ Springer wanted to talk to me and so we talked. He was upset about a comment made on our broadcast but the problem was that I didn't make the comment, my partner made the comment and I think that if players want the right to complain about certain comments, then it's their responsibility to find out who said what and not just randomly get pissed off at "the broadcasters".
