2012-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)How does PECOTA handle guys like Colby Rasmus or Milton Bradley (or, on the positive side of the ledger, Josh Hamilton) whose obvious off-the-field issues clearly affect their performances? Does the search for comparables include a search for comparable behavior problems?
(Bill from New Mexico)
That isn't something we can quantify a lot of the time. In the case of someone like Hamilton, it may play into some things we CAN quantify, like his playing time. (Colin Wyers)
2011-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who's your vote for this generation's Dick Allen? Skill- and attitude-wise, I guess.
(James from NY)
Gary Sheffield was a reasonable analogue for Allen, a guy who found controversy multiple times while bouncing from team to team. Milton Bradley is even more controversial, but he can't stay healthy and has been far more self-destructive than Allen ever was. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-04-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given the potential offensive ineptitude of the Mariners this season, wouldn't some creative thinking be in order? Would it make sense to move Ichiro down a slot or two in the order? Yes, he is a good lead-off guy because of his high BA, but he doesn't walk a ton. Let Figgins lead off (yes, I know his OBP is crappy for a lead-off guy). But, when he IS on-base, having a guy like Ichiro (with his bat control and contact ability) up next could allow the Mariners to do some creative things. His doubles power coupled with Figgins' speed could also allow him to drive in a few runs before the 'heart of the lineup' comes up. I just don't know if Ichiro would be horribly insulted by a drop in the lineup. However, desperate times call for desperate measures. When your next best hitter is Milton Bradley, times are desperate.
(JoshC77 from Columbus, OH)
#6 Org!

Look, you've got a team which last year had the worst offense in the last 40 years, and they batted Ichiro first and Figgins second 157 times, so there's not a whole lot to lose by trying Plan B. The problem is that the Mariners have offensive sinkholes at so many other positions, and so little power to utilize towards a short-sequence offense. It's like trying to use a napkin as a tablecloth - ain't gonna work. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)There seems to be something missing from the Elijah Dukes story. Guys is still young enough, the skills/tools are immense (ceiling seems higher than say Lastings Milledge). Besides smoking a little reefer and the odd lover's quarrel what did he do to fully poison the well? I mean Milton Bradley is still in the league (nominally).?
(WilliamWilde from Boston)
If bad makeup were a tool, Dukes would be an 80 for sure. Absolutely worse than Bradley. Here's hoping him the best of luck in his incipient rap career. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Eric--Given your interest in contracts and value, I thought you might be able to answer a question that I can't figure: Why is the "expiring contract" such a big deal in trades in the NBA, but never a factor in MLB? What is inherently different between the structure of the two leagues so that NBA players can have the nickname "Expiring Contract" (if only by Bill Simmons), but I'm sure Milton Bradley won't be bandied about as a trade asset this year? Thanks.
(GC from Confuseville)
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I understand it, the salaries involved in an NBA trade need to be within about 15% of each other. You can't trade a $24 million player for a $4 million. So an expiring contract would make the salaries involved match, or come close to it, and then the team GETTING the expiring contract player doesn't re-sign him in the off-season. So if I trade you a $24 million player for a $8 million and a $16 million expiring contract, I just effectively dumped $24 million. With baseball, the trade rules are different so it doesn't come into play. (Eric Seidman)
2010-07-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Jose Bautista is you were the Blue Jays? Every time you think he is about to let up, he records a few more extra base hits..
(JDGilroy from Toronto)
Since those extra base hits won't help the Blue Jays get anywhere this year, and aren't going to continue forever, if they can get anything of value for him they should do it, and if they really like him, they can sign him back next year. I hope he stays in the junior circuit, though, since I drafted him in my AL-only Strat league.

Now that I write for BP, a few acquaintances have started seeking out my advice for their fantasy teams, and Bautista was the first guy I mentioned this spring: "I wouldn't be shocked to see Jose Bautista play well for the Jays -- he may be a Raul Ibanez-style late bloomer, and there's a decent chance he'll play some 3b as well as the outfield corners." Then again, I also predicted big bouncebacks for BJ Upton and Milton Bradley, so I'm not exactly the Kwisatz Haderach. (Ken Funck)
2010-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Good question on technology...but I wonder if there would be any restrictions against having an iPad or a laptop in the dugout? It wouldn't make any sense considering anyone in the dugout could walk into the clubhouse to access the same equipment but it's a thought.
(Joe V. from Pequannock, NJ)
There isn't any restriction that I know of short of equipping a coach with a sniper scope and having him shoot fly balls out of the air (aim up, Don Zimmer, UP!). I just wouldn't want to be the manager who has to tell Milton Bradley that he can't borrow it to listen to tunes between at-bats. (Steven Goldman)
2010-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everyone lauded Jack Z. for ripping off Jim Hendry and the Cubs by unloading Carlos Silva and getting Milton Bradley. What say you after two weeks? Looks like Milton is just waiting to explode and ruin the clubhouse. Maybe he just is not that good. Oh, let me remind you, Seattle gave the Cubs a few million on top of everything else.
(Trey from San Diego)
They would have traded Bradley for a case of Old Style to whomever chipped in a little cash. Getting Silva is neither here nor there. Bradley had to go and there is no one in Chicago shedding any tears over his departure. That said, the Cubs' lineup is decidedly ordinary in the middle. When Derrek Lee sat out the other day, Xavier Nady batted cleanup--with a righty on the mound. I know clubs overrate chemistry and believe me, they spend a lot of time worrying about it. But Bradley is in a class all his own. For what its worth, I've always found Bradley to be articulate and polite, if not exactly outgoing. The guy just has no impulse control. (Bradford Doolittle)
2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)the chicago media is gaga over Tyler Colvin, mostly because he's not Milton Bradley. What is his upside? What do you think about his prospects?
(spf from ill.)
Remember back in the day when Todd Hollandsworth got hot and that certain subsection of Cubs folks (you know the type) got all worked up and wanted him to play more and then when he did, it wasn't so good? It's like that. Colvin is going to have a big league career, but he'll have for more time as a bench outfielder than a starter. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Milton Bradley for Carlos Silva deal will blow up in Seattle's face...
(Tim from Chicago)
How could it possibly blow up in their faces? Getting something for Silva, even a player who is far from a sure thing, seems like a triumph. (Steven Goldman)
2010-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Didn't Jack Z throw money at the Cubs too, putting them on a bigger hook for Milton Bradley?
(Jack from Chicago)
The Mariners are giving the Cubs a total of $9 million, so assuming Bradley stays healthy and my math is right, they are out $30 million on Bradley/Silva vs. the $25 mil they would have had to pay Silva. They're paying an extra $5 million for something that MIGHT work vs. having something that almost definitely wouldn't have worked. That doesn't seem like a bad idea. (Steven Goldman)
2010-03-23 16:30:00 (link to chat)Matt, for all the hype Jack Zduriencik got this winter, it seems as if things arenīt going so smoothly in Spring Training for the mariners: Milton Bradley getting into trouble, Cliff Lee having some health issues... how do you think all that will work out? How do you see them in that division?
(Guillermo from Montevideo)
Every team has their problems. I think Jack Z is a great GM. Of course, no GM deserves to be treated like he can do no wrong. Otherwise, we end up with people shouting that sabermetrics is stupid because Billy Beane can't win. Every GM has strengths as weaknesses. Overall, that really looks like a great division. Four teams, any of one them could win it. I'd probably bet on the Mariners if I had to guess, but maybe the Rangers are the better bet. I also have no idea why the Angels beat their Pythagorean Record so handily in recent years. Maybe they shouldn't be counted out either. The A's could take it, too, of course. As far as Cliff Lee himself, I'm not sure I'd give up on him with a small injury. I could his low trade value being a symptom of health questions, but I'd still bet he gets 30 starts if I had to guess. (Matt Swartz)
2010-02-17 16:00:00 (link to chat)Milton Bradley: fantasy buy or bust?
(MarinerDan from SF)
I still don't 100% understand how he fits in Seattle. If they mostly DH him (which I think they probably should), he could be useful in deeper leagues. Beyond that I am not buying. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-02-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What players, that you've met, have seemed most different from their media image and how?
(James from The Baseball Tavern)
Lastings Milledge and Milton Bradley in baseball, Jarkko Ruutu in hockey, all three in a positive sense. The opposite has also happened, but my mother drilled into me the concept of "If you don't have anything nice to say about somebody..." (David Laurila)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Re: the Mariners... I just don't see it. I like all the moved they made but it seems like they're still short a bat or two if they want to be a contender. Will all this excitement from the off season be for naught?
(Kyle from Arizona)
When half your lineup features players who are arguably the best defenders in the league at their position according to various metrics, you don't need to worry quite as much about the bats, but having said that, I'd be much more comfortable if they had brought back Russell Branyan instead of getting Casey Kotchman for first base. A lot depends on how well Milton Bradley rebounds - we know the dude can hit if he's healthy. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Milton Bradley can't rebound. He's more of a 3 point shooter.
(Ratcatcher from Durham, NC)
Try the veal! (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Xavier Nady any kind of positive for the Cubs? Sad that adding a 4th outfielder is possibly the triumphant move of the off-season.
(Leroy Brown from Downtown)
That's if he can stay healthy, a big if, but at least he's potentially an upgrade on Reed Johnson. And the latter part... wasn't that what we could say about signing Marlon Byrd? I suppose there's the loudly trumpeted Pyrrhic victory of making Milton Bradley go away, but Carlos Silva's going to make people miss Al Nipper. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-14 16:00:00 (link to chat)What are your expectations for Milton Bradley in Seattle? Games played? Flareups with teammates and the media? Is there anything that Seattle can or should do to prevent Bradley from melting down?
(JWR from Chicago)
You can't help a patient who doesn't want the help. Seattle can offer to help him, but if he's not interested... At that point, it's just a matter of time before an incident happens. The problem with anger control issues is that htey are rather unpredictable. The one thing that might happen is that Bradley is at the age where his pre-frontal cortex is reaching the final stages of development. That's the area of the brain that handles impulse control. (Russell A. Carleton)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Alfonso Soriano or Milton Bradley this year? Neither isn't an option.
(Stan from Azkaban)
Milton. Soriano worries me. Outside of the injury he had some legitimate concerns crop up in his ability that I need to look into more before I publish the rankings. I assume Bradley will improve simply by nature of leaving accursed Wrigley. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think every other fanbase is jealous of the lone Cubs off-season acquisition - Jeff Gray? I would be...
(Jack from Chicago)
Making Milton Bradley go away is a big enterprise, especially when it's obvious everyone's expecting him to be just given away, lest the Cubs actually have to climb down and use the man next spring. Which would be great drama, but we'll see. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-12-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ok, the Cubs are going to dump Milton Bradley. But which of these three outfields would help the cubs win more games? Option 1 : Soriano, Mike Cameron, Fukudome Option 2: Soriano, Fukudome, Pat Burrell Option 3: Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley Am I wrong to think it's 3? I just think the cubs under Jim Hendry overreact to last year, and overreact to media criticism. And I'd like the Ricketts regime to start by flipping off the media/fanbase and keeping Bradley. It would be a healthy thing. Or am I just crazy?
(Mike from Chicago)
It's 1. Huge defensive difference, and Bradley can't hit, field and stay healthy all at once, so you end up with Bobby Scales in the outfield. Setting aside any and all non-baseball issues, Bradley is a lousy fit for an NL team. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-12-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Let's just assume Jim Hendry is unable to unload Milton Bradley by the end of the Meetings...would you then consider this a complete and utter failure for the Cubs? Job costing for Hendry? I think it should be...
(Goose from Chicago)
Oh, heck no. Signing him was the mistake (and as I keep saying, for baseball reasons, not the other ones). Better to not compound the problem with a bad trade than to do something silly. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you see the Milton Bradley saga getting resolved?
(Guancous from Silver Spring, MD)
Bradley will be involved in a four-team trade in which the Royals get Carl Everett, the Cubs get Albert Belle, and the Rangers get Charles Johnson's wife. (Eric Seidman)
2009-11-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)Where do you see Milton Bradley ending up and will it be for another bad contract or the Cubs picking up a big chunk of salary? I'm guessing the Cubs will have to bargain hunt for his replacement.
(Matt from Chicago)
Anybody smart enough to trade for Milton Bradley is smart enough to stick the Cubs with paying the bill. The Cubs will fake the outfield spot with some Reed Johnson-flavored solution, I'm pretty sure. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Could the Cubs have released Milton Bradley and any other bad contracts, and _then_ filed for bankruptcy? Seems like it would have been a good way to get rid of some dead weight!
(Jay Taylor from San Francisco)
Even if it was doable--which seems highly unlikely to me--it might also be a great way to make sure that nobody wants to sign with you ever again. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does this make sense for the Mets and Cubs? Cubs trade Carlos Zambrano and Alfonso Soriano to the Mets for Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez and Fernando Martinez.
(Matt from Whippleville, NY)
It might work for the Mets, but there's no way it works for the Cubs. Perez is even more dubious as assets go than the Big Z, and Castillo's somebody only the Mets were willing to afford. Put Milton Bradley in Soriano's place, however, and maybe you make Jim Hendry fidget about personal wish fulfillment. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-10-05 16:00:00 (link to chat)Would a Milton Bradley + 16 MIL for Pat Burrell trade be feesible? The Rays Front Office is always looking for improvements and getting a player for 2 yrs and only costing them 2.5 Per makes a ton of sense for them.
(jlarsen from Chicagoland)
So the Cubs would be paying 80% of Bradley's remaining salary AND giving him up in exchange for an awful fielding outfielder who constantly needs defensive replacements late in the game. If the Rays pull this off, Hendry should be fired and Friedman becomes the new Billy Beane. (Eric Seidman)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you're Jim Hendry and have had enough of Milton Bradley for this life time do you cut bait and and accept Jose Guillen in an even up swap and congratulate yourself on saving $8M???
(kcboomer from kc)
Then you still have no CF, and you're too righthanded again, and you dropped 60 points of OBP in the swap, and you've traded for the last guy before Bradley to take a big suspension at the end of the year for being a [noun].

So no, I don't.

Lightning round starts now. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where does Milton Bradley end up...I guess the only sure choice is not on the North Side
(John from Arlington)
The Pat Burrell/Bradley offseason deal that has been speculated upon seems like an interesting gamble for both teams. I don't know if any manager can get along with Bradley, but Maddon seems like a better bet than Piniella. (Steven Goldman)
2009-09-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Happy Labor Day CK... Do the Cubs spend the offseason rebuilding, retooling or some combination? If they're content to let Harden go, as the rumours insist, wouldn't they need to bring a starting pitcher back?
(strupp from Madison)
Happy LD back atcha. Given the relative untradeability of some of the big-ticket contracts they have on the roster, the relative paucity of worthwhile prospects, and the absence of any great team in the division, it has to be a matter of re-tooling. As far as a starter, they might slum about a bit to find a functional veteran for their fourth or fifth man, but it isn't the rotation that needs fixing, it's being able to get better production out of Milton Bradley, Geovany Soto, and especially Alfonso Soriano. Sori needs to send thank-you notes to MB on a daily basis, because perhaps nobody else could keep a season so miserable off of the front page. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)John- Phil Rogers suggested an outright dumping of Milton Bradley today in the Trib. While I cannot comment on the perceived/imagined/real abuse Bradley has taken, I see Rogers' point as his behavior will likely be extremely painful to endure for the coming two years. Wouldn't you first try to see if an AL team would take Bradley, assuming of course the Cubs would have to eat at least half of his salary? Thanks.
(KRS from Chicago)
I've heard the Cubs will try like hell to trade Bradley and maybe eat even more than half his salary if he had to. I never saw the point in giving him a three-year deal to begin with. He's a talented player but, with his volitility, I'd never go more than one year because he could wear his welcome out at any time. (John Perrotto)
2009-07-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any insights into the Khalil Greene situation? Without naming names, have you ever done interviews with players who looked like they were on the verge of a Greene-like meltdown? Is it something that an observer can see coming?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Interesting question. I almost interviewed Greene during spring training, only to opt for Ryan Ludwick and Todd Wellemyer instead -- this was for a BPR show.

I interviewed Milton Bradley last summer, also for a BPR, and while he was very thoughtful and pleasant in that interaction, he obviosly has the reputation of being volatile when provoked -- unfortunately, provoking is a hobby of a small handful of attention-seeking scribes. Hey, ballplayers are people. You have your good days and bad days, and sometimes life deals you a troubling hand that lasts weeks, months, or longer. Fortunately, teams employ people to help out when that happens. (David Laurila)
2009-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Travis Buck is playing for Sacramento because ____________.
(Billy Beane & Bob Geren from Oakland)
He has a .289 OBP since 2007 and makes Milton Bradley look like Cal Ripken Jr. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-06-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)It seems like Milton Bradley *must* DH if a team wants to see anything productive from him at the plate. A trade to an AL contender would make a whole lot of sense to all parties involved. What say you?
(Tex Premium Lager from NJ)
Hitting, playing the field, staying healthy. Milton Bradley can do any two of these at once. The Cubs' decision to sign him was silly at the time, and remains so now. If they can get a relief arm for him from an AL team willing to pay the contract, they should do it once they can legally trade him. I like Bradley a lot--he's just not physically capable of playing the field and being a good player at the same time. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is it safe to write-off Delmon Young as a bust?
(Reggie from Montgomery)
Well, I hate to rush these things; for every David Green, you might find a guy like Milton Bradley or Brandon Phillips. There might be factors in play here that only time and hard experience might iron out, so I wouldn't put this on the Twins. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-03-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could Barry Bonds help the Astros, or does there have to be a DH opportunity at this point?
(murphy654321 from Boston)
If I had to guess which player was more likely to play 100 games in the field between Barry Bonds and Milton Bradley, it would be a very easy decision. So, no, I don't think Bonds has to be in a DH situation. I don't know if the Astros are a fit, unless you're going to move Lee to right field, which opens up a whole new set of issues. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-10 14:30:00 (link to chat)Joe, considering the salary dumps the Cubs were forced to make to sign Milton Bradley, I wonder...would you rather have Hoffpauir, DeRosa, and Wood or Bradley, Fontenot/Miles, and Gregg?
(Gray from Chicago)
I'm not that high on Hoffpaiur or DeRosa, but I'd still rather have the guys who can actually take the field. Bradley, for the last four years, has shown little ability to do so. I love the bat, and I've defended him on some of the other stuff, but he needs to be in the AL. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-01-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nelson Cruz...is he really going to bat clean-up in Texas?
(dpv from (tn))
This is what happens when you don't re-sign Milton Bradley. I think there's a good chance that we see Cruz put up something like, say, .270/.350/.490. Which is pretty good. I'm not sure how much of that is going to be because of Texas or because he's good though. (Marc Normandin)
2009-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)How many games do you think the Cubs will get out of Milton Bradley over the next few seasons? Is it true that the third year of the contract is not guaranteed, but rather an option based on how much he plays in the first 2 years?
(Marc from San Antonio)
I'd guess he'll play in something like 120 games per year. He's likely to have a hamstring strain or oblique strain along the way, just like any player. He's not as fragile as some have let on after he signed, but he also doesn't have the protection of the DH slot. The Cubs are (or at least look) five deep in the OF right now, so he should be able to get plenty of rest. (Will Carroll)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)So what really is the Cubs plan? Sign a RF and go from that point? They really don't need to do much as the Central competition looks like it might have regressed a bit.
(jklein from TP)
They would like to sign Milton Bradley but would like to see his price tag drop a bit. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)How much is Milton Bradley going to cost in free agency? He put up incredibly numbers last year (in a great hitters ballpark). But he's also injury prone and apparently not a very nice guy. Who's going to spend on him and how much are they going to spend?
(HonusCobb from Wayne, NE)
I'm hearing four years and 40 million, though nobody seems willing to go that high. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will the Rays bank the savings from shipping out Edwin Jackson and possibly non-tendering Gabe Gross to bring in a tasty DH like a Milton Bradley (whom I think Joe Maddon would be great for)?
(Aaron from YYZ)
Well, they have interest in Bradley and Abreu, so they've got a really good shot of getting a proven hitter to DH and bat in the middle of the lineup. All of a sudden, The Trop looks like a good place to play. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-04 13:30:00 (link to chat)Who's the best option for the Reds to sign or trade for in left field: Milton Bradley, Jermaine Dye, Willie Harris, Delmon Young, or someone else?
(Mister Redlegs from Athens, GA)
I have a thing somewhere half-written...five FAs I wouldn't sign...Bradley's on the list. He's not durable, doesn't/can't really play the OF any longer, coming off a peak season. He was a good player at bouncing-around prices; at some 3/35 price, I'd pass. What about moving Encarnacion out there and getting a third baseman instead? Edwin's defense is that bad, no? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-11-24 15:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on where Milton Bradley lands? Assuming you want him to be a DH 80+% of the time, there don't seem to be a lot of teams that would make a good fit...
(Aaron from YYZ)
It seems like he's probably headed to Toronto. Gammons says that signing him is the Jays' "top priority":
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3709231&name=gammons_peter

That seems to fit in with their pattern of recent years--Frank Thomas, etc. It's going to take at least a two-year deal to get him, I'd think. (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nady to the Rangers for one of their catching prospects perhaps? And speaking of the Rangers, Milton Bradley would look nice in the Mets or Yanks outfield, but I doubt he'd hit it off with the media.
(dianagramr from NYC)
You're not the only one to suggest Nady for a Texas catcher, but I figure the Rangers would say, "Big hat, no cattle." They're going to get better offers, even for Laird, who is a good defender but not much of a hitter (IE a pretty good dictionary picture of a reserve catcher). Again, the problem with Nady is that he's just a stopgap as a starter in an outfield corner... Milton Bradley was probably the best pure hitter in the AL this year. I have no idea where he'll go. I could really see Joe Girardi rubbing him the wrong way, alas. (Steven Goldman)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. Where do you think Milton Bradley will end up? I'm thinking he can probably be had for a 3 year, $36 million-type deal. Do you think he'd be a good fit for the OBP-needy Angels?
(Dennis from Monterey Park, CA)
The thing about Bradley is that I don't think anybody--anybody--inside the industry our out has any idea of what to expect from him. I'm sure plenty of people would welcome signing him to an especially creative, incentive-laden deal, but I expect he's self-aware enough and go for the guaranteed money. While he'd be the kind of player the Angels could use, I think that's only after the Teixeira scenario plays out; if LAnaheim tries to keep either Tex or K-Rod but loses both, all sorts of things become possible. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Steven: Who's your pick for AL MVP?
(Joe from Washington, DC)
I'm leaning Pedroia. I kind of wish it was Milton Bradley, who is probably the hitter of the year in the league, but hasn't played enough. And before anyone asks, in the NL it's Pujols, Pujols, Pujols and also Pujols. (Steven Goldman)
2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)The Yankees are desperate for a catcher and an outfielder, the Rangers have 4 catchers and an extra Milton Bradley and always need pitching. It almost seems too obvious a fit. Wouldn't a catcher and Bradley for Phil Hughes (or something along those lines) make sense for both sides?
(Stanky from DC)
The Yankees really don't want to give up Hughes or Kennedy. They wouldn't for Johan Santana over the winter and I'm told they won't do it now, pennant race be damned. (John Perrotto)
2008-07-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Should the Rangers sign Milton Bradley this winter?
(James from Stamford, Texas)
If it's another short deal, I'd take that risk. Bradley's age and health history make him a massive risk for anything beyond that, although I suspect he'll get longer offers. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ms. Kahrl, my favourite baseball writer. A few years ago we had slow-footed sluggers undervalued (and that was probably a long period, no?). Then, the As and others focused on the fragile and the defensively-gifted. Care to guess what type of talent teams might be passing over too quickly now? Or has that window closed more or less?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Ah, Mr. Clancy... is it wrong that I liked Dave Stieb better? (Hey, it isn't like I'm picking Luis Leal.) Anyway, I'd suggest that it's still "bad apples," because look what citizenship grades have done to the market value of Milton Bradley or Barry Bonds. Or Shawn Chacon. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)What sort of return could be fetched for Milton Bradley? For Vicente Padilla, who a year ago had less value than a pepsi container intended for popcorn and filled with rocks?
(Or from Dallas)
It's going to take a gambling man in a suit to make a deal for Bradley, because as this year's chase after an announcer demonstrates, the guy's fuse is so short he's more dangerous than Roy Scheider's cargo in "Sorcerer." I can't help but make a comparison to Tony Phillips, another valuable player who frightened some of his employers, because they're also both fragile. Like Phillips, Bradley could rip off a number of great seasons and make people ignore the other stuff for a while; for his sake, I hope he does so. But there's a pretty small group of people willing to take the chance, and you can bet that they're also less willing to put up a lot of talent to take a shot at it.

Padilla's more interesting in terms of what he might bring in return, in that he might be seen as a solution for this year and next at roughly market pricing (his 2010 option can be bought out), giving his new team a mid-rotation starter without their having to risk making a Pavano- or Eaton-sized mistake. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)It has become a tradition to yell 'Yahtzee!' whenever Milton Bradley knocks one out of the park. Does that qualify as a nickname, or is it merely an observation?
(Or from Dallas)
It's not quite a nickname, but it is wonderful, a bit like going to the Metrodome in the '80s and hearing "Now batting, Kent Hrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrbek!!!" I guess Yahtzee is the best choice, too. Yelling "Scrabble!" or something wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)What sort of return could thoroughly contributing veterans with a history of inconsistency and trouble (read Vicente Padilla, Milton Bradley) fetch in a trade?
(Or from Dallas)
Well, the way teams covet starting pitcher and as well as Padilla has been pitching, I would think the Rangers could get something decent back for him. Bradley is good but there's always a question of the baggage he carries and that scares some teams off. (John Perrotto)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Hear about Matt Garza seeing a renowned sports psychologist? Do you think he's as "excitable" as Carlos Zambrano or did the Rays just replace one hot-head(Dukes or Delmon, take your pick) for another?
(jlarsen from DRays Bay)
Yeah, I read that. I don't think he is in Elijah Dukes' class (I mean who is? Not even Milton Bradley) or will do something as dumb as Delmon Young did in Class AAA. I'd say he's "excitable" like the Big Z. (John Perrotto)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)Are you coming around at all on the job I've been doing as Rangers g.m.?
(Jon Daniels from Arlington, Texas)
Lots of Rangers questions today... Jon, like most GMs you've got your high and low points. I gave you high praise for the haul you got at the deadline last year (http://www.nysun.com/sports/texas-holds-a-fire-sale-to-salvage-future/59557/), and both Josh Hamilton and Milton Bradley can hit. But that pitching staff is a fright -- both the rotation and bullpen -- even without the Bad Knight of Aruba, and I certainly wonder if Edinson Volquez could have helped your team more than Hamilton. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-06-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Given the Milton Bradley incident, have you ever had a player confront you, in anger, after hearing some of your comments?
(Mike from Chicago)
It's funny b/c the one thing that is frustrating is that every once in a while a player will get upset with something I said but they didn't actually hear it. It's always the wives, friends or parents that hear it and they don't always remember it correctly. Now obviously, that wasn't the case with Milton. There's nothing that will annoy me more than when a player says "I heard what you guys said last night" and my response always is "No, you need to let me know who said what and then we can have the discussion". For example, last year I came in to the visiting clubhouse and was told Russ Springer wanted to talk to me and so we talked. He was upset about a comment made on our broadcast but the problem was that I didn't make the comment, my partner made the comment and I think that if players want the right to complain about certain comments, then it's their responsibility to find out who said what and not just randomly get pissed off at "the broadcasters". (Jon "Boog" Sciambi)
2008-05-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Keppinger on the DL, I was forced to pickup a backup in Barmes. Now he's on the DL and I picked up Vazquez. My OF is pretty deep (Milton Bradley, Fukudome, Bruce, Pence and Chris Young.) Would you actively shop any or all of these guys for a SS in the meantime (or longterm) or wait it out with Vazquez or a Jack Wilson or a Bobby Crosby on the waiver wire until Keppinger comes back?
(jnelson33 from Pennsauken)
Wait it out. SS isn't a deep at all, so the price of admission is too high for my tastes. I'm just floating through SS as they are hot myself. (Marc Normandin)

What is this, an Enron joke? Dynamic:Hank Blalock::Sparklessness:Batteries.

I figure a reunion of Ron Washington's Rangers and Milton Bradley still makes a lot more sense, especially if you get the Cubs to eat cro^^^^HHHH... money on the exchange. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-10-16 13:00:00NLCS Game Two/ALCS Game Onejwillie (Mpls): Would the Twins be wise to ship Delmon Young to the Cubs for Milton Bradley in a malcontent swap? Bradley would fit perfectly in the #2 spot for the Twins and he could take turn with Kubel DHing and playing the field. The Twins need more patience and less free swingers.

I am of the firm belief that the Twins should ship Delmon Young anywhere. If the Cubs make that deal, they might as well not bother showing up next year as the blow to their already-shaky offense will be fatal. And their defense. And their beer sales. (Steven Goldman)
