2021-02-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Feels like a lot of hype brewing round Leody Taveras, getting several trade offers. Is this good time to sell (in OBP league)? Or is he a must-hold in my steal starved team, do you reckon he'll be top-10 in that category?
(Jimmy from South bend )
In OBP I would sell if you can get people to buy in on him as a future Top 100 player. He could be top 10 in the category, but the overall package suggests there is some near term crash-and-burn too. (Mike Gianella)
2020-09-25 16:00:00 (link to chat)In a 14 team weekly h2h dynasty points league which of these players would you roster going into next season for a club well-positioned to win now and going forward - Nate Lowe, Hunter Dozier, Randy Arozarena and Jake Cronenworth are all currently on my roster. Available are Hampson, A Riley, McMahon, Jesus Aguilar, Jared Walsh, Brendan Rodgers, Willie Calhoun and Leody Taveras. I am also currently rostering Oneil Cruz and wondering if I should hold on a bit longer given his uncertain legal status. My current prospects include Vaughn Brujan Cruz and KRobInson. Prospects still available include Alek Thomas Brennen Davis Jordan Groshans and Corbin Carroll. Thanks for considering the question, Dylan
(dylanrox from Philly)
Some very enticing options there. For the MLBers, I really like Calhoun and Taveras--they'll be on a bad Texas team next year, but they should be centerpieces in that lineup. I would get in on Riley; the power upside is worthwhile even if the average will kind of suck. And I'd get in on Rodgers as well--we just haven't seen a healthy version of him for an extended run in the majors. Hampson and McMahon haven't really wowed, even with the Coors advantage, Walsh feels a bit flash-in-the-pan (but I'm prepared to be wrong there!), and Aguilar could be OK for a couple more years, but his skills should be easy enough to find. Of the prospects, I am heavy into Carroll, though I like all those names. I'd probably wait on Cruz's situation for a few weeks before cutting, but it isn't looking good right now. (Jon Hegglund)
2020-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. What are your thoughts on Leody Taveras? I was offered Taveras, and Gio Urshela for Josh Donaldson in a 20 team dynasty league. Seems Taveras’ prospect status has declined rapidly!!!
(Donnell from Washington, DC)
Bret Sayre still rides the Leody Taveras train, and is the reason Taveras made our dynasty 101, but he represents a small minority. That is not to say Taveras is without upside, but he is a better real-life prospect than a fantasy one given his limited power. Still, steals are in short supply and he could be a 20+ SB guy. Something like .270/10/20+ is certainly possible as a peak. Think Ender Inciarte.

Now, as for the offer, I prefer Donaldson to the package of Taveras/Urshela. To downgrade from Urshela to Donaldson, I'd want a borderline-top-50 prospect in return. (Jesse Roche)
2020-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Last two keepers in a midsized 5x5 h2h dynasty league - pick from Jordan Lyles, Carlos Rodon, Alex Young, Randy Dobnak, Austin Voth. Or should I dump all the pitchers and keep Seth Beer and Leody Taveras? I'm finding myself unnaturally attracted to Dobnak....
(James from Toledo)
I would dump them all and keep Beer and Taveras. Of the arms, we are highest on Rodon, but I also like Lyles a good bit. I drafted Dobnak in P365XDL this offseason at 936th overall so that tells you what the industry thinks of him. If he wins a starting job, his leash will be very short in Minnesota and his high-contact ground-ball approach does not normally provide a ton of fantasy value, especially if he is getting hit. Of course, if you want a high-end Uber driver, he is your man! (Jesse Roche)
2019-11-25 12:00:00 (link to chat)The Rangers system might be the one where the team's top prospect reminds me of Craig. Leody Taveras has been around forever but his stock consistently sinks due to lack of production and a general sense that he's overrated. Congrats Leody, you had a minor league WRC+ above 100 for the first time since 2016. That's about as meaningless as being named EIC of BP. Taveras still sucks.
(Yuri from Israel)
Now now, Yuri, I am all for having some good fun at Craig's expense, but let's leave Leody out of it. (Texas Rangers Top 10 Chat)
2019-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)How is Leody Taveras looking this season? I see his numbers look better in his second season of A+ ball, is it him just being a year older or has he improved/made an adjustment? Does he still have the potential to be a helpful fantasy asset in the future?
(Flipai from Maryland)
I got to see him for a few at-bats last night and all the tools (such that one could glean) looked right. He's walking more but also striking out more, I think as a byproduct of watching more pitches. The BABIP is a significant departure from his career levels, but he might be earning it through contact (despite the poor SLG). The only hit I had for him last night was a looper though, and one game is a small sample anyway. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)What is the argument for keeping Leody Taveras in the top 50 solely on the basis of being young and toolsey with so many young, toolsey guys behind him who also put up numbers?
(Selig from CA)
"I've gotten pretty good at getting "my guys" on the list where I want them." (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Seuly Matias has the big power, but unlike the comp in his top 10 profile, he hasn't shown the OBP/BB skills that Joey Gallo has. What are you all seeing that suggests he could get to some of his power in games, hence his ranking? Thanks!
(Steve from KC)
Well, he's gotten it into minor league games, so this isn't an Austin Beck or Leody Taveras type situation, but I get what you mean. It's an athleticism and swing bet, as he isn't as yolked up or long as your typical elite power guy and it's not an awful approach, perhaps just a bit raw for full season. We think it will come with more reps, but... (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-07-13 15:00:00 (link to chat)Were there any guys you really pushed for in the Top 50, or that you were notably higher than other BP staff on?
(Jefferson Airplane from Canada)
Taylor Trammell is probably the big one. It's just a profile I love even though I fully admit it might not be huge upside. I got plenty of uh feedback from the staff on Leody Taveras too, but I'm gonna be ride or die there for another year. We're obviously very aggressive on May as well and that is mostly, though not entirely, me. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-07-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is it time to change our opinions on Leody Taveras?
(Teddy from Forrest Park)
He's playing the entire season at 19 in High-A, in a bad league to hit in. The scouting reports are still there. Jeffrey said yesterday that his Futures Game BP bought him two more years alone. I don't think we're there yet. (Jarrett Seidler)
2018-06-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Seems like Leody Taveras has been a guy that could explode at any minute.. for 1.5 years now. I know he's been young for every level he's played, but in the grand scheme of things, at what point do you look at a prospect and just acknowledge that breakout may never happen?
(Bobby Bradley's 40-time from MA)
Once the tools and projection start to backslide. They haven't so far. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-09-07 20:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospect do you like better Leody Taveras or Jesus Sanchez?
(Carl from TX)
Jesus Sanchez, since he's having the better season and because he wasn't nearly as highly touted going into the season as Leody Taveras. Jesus Sanchez didn't make any major Top 100 prospect lists coming into 2017 while Leody Taveras was on all of them. I expect that heading into 2018, their rankings will be pretty close to each other. (Scooter Hotz)
2017-09-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospect do you like better Leody Taveras or Jesus Sanchez?
(Carl from TX)
Big fan of Taveras, even if the tools haven't translated statistically quite yet. (Collin Whitchurch)
2017-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)How concerned are you with Leody Taveras's recent struggles at the plate?
(Leo from SF)
Taveras is the exact reason I hate projecting 18 year olds. He did have that one great run in rookie ball! But other than that his line has looked...fine but not telling in any way. Which is why the scouting, the history, etc are meaningful.

This is a long way of saying that his struggles probably matter, but not within the context of his stat line. If scouts are saying he looks markedly worse than he did when he was a top 50 prospect, then you start worrying. Until then, assume he's just getting bigger and better. (Trevor Strunk)
2017-07-25 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Leody Taveras a future top 10 prospect? Better real life player than fantasy?
(Mike from Atlanta)
Quite possibly, some people are really high on him. Probably a better real life player though. The glove lifts his floor up a lot. That isn't to say he won't be a good fantasy player though.
-Emmett (Emmett Rosenbaum & Nathan Graham)
2017-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Leody Taveras - a future top 10 prospect?
(Dave from TX)
He has the tools. I'd like to see what a full season looks like before jumping him that high, however. (Mark Barry)
2017-06-13 12:00:00 (link to chat)So is Leody Taveras' .256/.304/.372 line still fine considering he's 19 in single-A? Seems a little lackluster, but I know he's seen as a very highly regarded prospect.
(Chris from Arlington, TX)
Yes, it's absolutely still fine. He's actually still 18 and all the tools are the same. Some guys take some time to develop and adapt. I'm not worried about Leody. (Craig Goldstein)
2017-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Leody Taveras the truest 5-tool outfield prospect in baseball at the moment?
(Tyler from Texas)
If there can be only one, give me Victor Robles and a big ol' claymore. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-03-23 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a possibility of Leody Taveras going away from switch hitting. Looks very unnatural from the right side. Do you know if hes got more power from one side or is it even?
(Mike from Toronto )
I haven't heard anything about a change like that, but by just glancing at his splits it does look like he's a lot better against right-handed pitching, more power (well, at least a higher Slug%, anyway). (Mark Barry)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Favorites for 2018 top prospect?
(Mark from US)
Moncada, Robles, Rosario, Jimenez, are the highest guys most likely to still be list-eligible. I could see any of the four taking it. If you want someone further down, how about a crafty quid on Leody Taveras? (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Think Texas starts Leody Taveras in Hickory?
(David from Colorado)
If he performs well in the spring, yes. Texas hasn't shown a hesitation to push their young position player prospects before, especially if they're confident in their ability to handle failure. (Kate Morrison)
