2018 The Dodgers' $30 million bet on Yaisel Sierra was starting to look at least a little less catastrophic when he was dominating in Double-A relief, but subsequent struggles at Oklahoma City raised more questions about whether the club can coax a big-league future out of the not-that-young right-hander.
2017 Things that Sierra has in common with Aroldis Chapman: 1) He is Cuban. 2) He signed for $30 million. 3) He flamed out as a starter. This could all start to sound like good news for Dodgers fans since, y'know, Chapman just won a World Series ring. The problem? The things they don't have in common are more important. To wit, Sierra lacks Chapman's fastball, slider, athleticism, left-handedness and velocity. What began with hype, and quickly turned to bust, could be salvaged thanks to Sierra's uptick in velo upon shifting to the pen. Still, that's not exactly what you're looking for when you drop that kind of cheddar on a signing bonus.
