2007 Tanyon Sturtze underwent surgery for a small tear in his rotator cuff and missed the bulk of the season. There wasn`t all that much there when he was healthy, so a comeback seems unlikely. The Braves gambled a guaranteed $750,000 plus incentives anyway.
2006 It`s the Circle of Sturtze, or as Eric Idle sang in `Always Look On the Bright Side of Life,` `You know, you come from nothing, you`re going back to nothing. What have you lost? Nothing!` The prevalent theory among Yankees camp followers was that Torre had overworked Sturtze in the first half, provoking a second half collapse (6.07 ERA). There may be something too this; prior to the All-Star break, Sturtze had walked just 1.5 batters per nine innings, but afterwards, his walk rate ballooned to 5.8. On the other hand, Sturtze`s control has always been his undoing, so this might just be a case of Sturtze going back to being Sturtze after a one-year sabbatical from himself.
2005 Bought sight unseen by Brian Cashman at the recommendation of a scout, which is a nice story but makes one wonder why the Yankees would sample the dregs of another organization before sampling what's floating at the bottom of their own cup. Initially, Sturtze pitched like himself, but each time he appeared the Yankees talked up how great he had been, eventually pretending him into the #3 man in the pen. Then a strange thing happened: Sturtze began to pitch well. If the Yankees invested this much faith in some of the talent in their system they would have a better, cheaper team over the next several years instead of a few out-of-character months from a sub-journeyman.
2004 Familiar to Ricciardi from his time in the A's system in the early-to-mid 90s, Sturtze opened 2003 in the Jays' notation. He lost his job to Escobar in May, but he had big guaranteed money coming, so they carried him along, handing him. mop-up work. Then he was entrusted with a 7-3 lead against the Red Sox on July 9th; a win would keep thelelavysslost the four games. It took Sturtze 13 pitches to put three runs on the board without getting anybody out, and the Jays lost the game. He barely pitched after that, and I doubt he got a Christmas card from Canada.
2003 Hal McRae rode him hard and put him away wet in an excruciating 2002, which saw Sturtze win the pitching Triple Raspberry, leading the league in hits, runs allowed, and losses. Sturtzeís job was to pitch a ton of innings, and he did it with remarkable decorum for the Rays last season. Reunited with some of his ex-compadres from the Oakland organization in Toronto, where heíll be relied upon to be the third starter.
2002 No offense to Sturtze, whoís battled hard and long to establish himself as a major leaguer, but the Devil Raysí best use for Sturtze would be as trade bait. Admittedly, to go 11-12 with a 100-loss club is a hell of an accomplishment, probably equivalent to 14-9 with an average team or 16-7 with a division winner. Itís important to remember, though, that Sturtze is 31 years old and until last year hadnít thrown 150 innings in a season since 1994, due to chronic injuries and chronic ineffectiveness.
2001 Brought over from the White Sox in exchange for Tony Graffanino, Tanyon Sturtze pitched wonderfully for the Devil Rays out of the bullpen, then even better in a late-season audition in the rotation: a 2.76 ERA in six starts with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 24 to 7. He's not that good but could join Lopez and Rekar to provide a cheap, effective rotation core while the team waits out the injuries to the Six-Million-Dollar Men.
2000 A minor-league journeyman who was pulled off the mound while blowing the final game of the Triple-A World Series to be given the news he was being promoted. Purchasing his contract cost the Sox Mario Valdez, since the first team eligible (the Twins) didn't let him pass through waivers. Sturtze's straight fastball makes a nice offering for people looking to pad salary arbitration cases or get that first major league hit. Itís been tasty.
1998 Thereís not a single good season or even partial season in the numbers listed under Sturtzeís name. He threw a no-hitter in the Southern League in Ď93, but spent so long in the Oakland system that the Cubs got him on Rule 5. There must be something about him that scouts like.
1997 One of the strangest fascinations with a non-prospect youíll see. Sturtze not only isnít a prospect, heís a genuinely lousy pitcher. Heís got a 90+ heater that has no movement and no breaking pitch, so he routinely gets lit up. But the radar gun keeps him around; heís a burden to any minor league roster.
1996  A Rule V selection from Oakland that the A's didn't want back. Scouting reports talk about his 90+ fastball, without mentioning it has no movement at all. Sturtze was given a shot as a middle reliever in the AFL this year, and he didn't embarrass himself; still, he's not a prospect.
