2016-08-11 14:00:00 (link to chat) | As a charter member of the Cody Ponce fan club, I'm curious if you think he'll be a Brewers representative in the AZL, considering he missed time in the beginning of the season. Or do you think the Brewers will be cautious with him? (Mike from MKE) | If they're confident that he's healthy, I do think they'll send him to the AZL to accumulate innings. Nathan Kirby or Taylor Williams could be possibilities, too, depending on their rehab schedules. (J.P. Breen) |
2016-08-11 14:00:00 (link to chat) | I missed out on or traded numerous prospects in my NL-only keeper league. Who are some under the radar guys (it's a 10-team league, large reserve list)? They need to have an ETA of 2018 at the latest as the three year clock starts running on them as soon as they are drafted. (johnklein from east coast) | This is a tough question. Josh Hader is worth rostering in keeper leagues, despite the risky profile. I'm not sure what qualifies for "under-the-radar" in a 10-team league (as it depends on the size of the reserve list), but guys like Forrest Wall, Yusniel Diaz, Cody Ponce, and Jack Flaherty are guys I like. 2016-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What are your thoughts on Cody Ponce? Debuted yesterday with 2 IP, 1H, 0BB, 0ER, 4 K.
They're obviously easing him in off injury...but I'm excited, think he is a talented pitcher. What do you think his ETA is? (fawkesmulder from Zzyzx) | He's definitely talented. Consistency has not been his friend at all, but he's definitely talented. Could be a high-leverage reliever or a backend starter. (Christopher Crawford) |
2016-03-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Cody Ponce or Jorge Lopez. Who has the higher ceiling? (Travis from Milwaukee) | Ceiling is Lopez, and it's not very close. Lopez legitimately could be a #2 starter. When I saw him about two weeks ago in Phoenix, it was pretty clearly three plus pitches from a good athlete with electric arm-speed. The control/command/delivery are the factors that could hold it back from being that #2 ceiling, but it's a #2 ceiling.
Ponce has improved since I saw him as an amateur at Cal Poly Pomona, but none of his individual pitches are ahead of Lopez. The strikes probably are, though, and his frame is more 'broad and durable' than 'twitchy, lithe, and athletic' like Lopez. Can't say Ponce has the higher ceiling, though, when he doesn't have an above-average non-fastball. His cutter is good, but that's still an iteration of a fastball. (Adam McInturff) |
2016-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What are your thoughts of Cody Ponce? (Lonny from Cleveland) | Cautiously optimistic. Ponce shows two plus pitches in his fastball and cutter, and mixes in a solid average curveball as well. I don't love the delivery, and he's not gonna have much more than average command -- if that. Still, I think you could be looking at a solid mid-rotation arm if everything goes right, or a high leverage reliever if it doesn't. (Christopher Crawford) |
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Any word on Cody Ponce? I saw someone on the prospect team did not like him, but the early returns look promising. What sort of fantasy upside do you see with him? (John from California ) | I don't know if "not like" is the correct term. I can only answer for myself here but for me Ponce has three plus pitches and a clean delivery. One scout said it was the cleanest delivery of the 2015 draft. Combine that with his body profile and that's some serious upside we're talking about, possibly #2 upside. It's an exciting package. (Mauricio Rubio) |
