2018 Ockimey came to Portland to walk, homer and strike out, and friends, he was all out of homers. In Salem, where he posted a .301 TAv as a 21-year-old, Ockimey looked straight out of Central Casting for a first base prospect. He’s big, he’s got a ton of natural raw, he strikes out too much and he can’t run or field a lick. The first two factors work in his favor, and he’s got a good enough work ethic that he might end up mitigating that last point as well. Ockimey won’t be able to outwork the swing-and-miss, though; it’s who he is, and the same long, leveraged swing that could one day produce plus game power also leaves him vulnerable to the K. If it all clicks for Ockimey, he could hit for enough power to become a second-division regular. If not, it’s tough to envision a role for him unless the majors expand to 28-man rosters.
2017 Pop-up prospect Josh Ockimey’s brother is a college linebacker and his sister is a Ph.D. candidate, but neither of them hit 18 homers and posted a .199 ISO in Greenville as a 20-year-old.

2017-07-19 17:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Ockimey. What's your take?
(Randy from Salem)
If we saw the bat in a vacuum, I'd love him a lot more. Hits for decent power, hits to all fields, and has a keen eye at the plate. Problem is, he's a first baseman, and the substantially high bars set for production at that position won't be kind to someone like Ockimey. I kind of like him, but if he reaches the majors, he's probably gonna be a TTO guy at best, and not last very long. (Brett Cowett)
2017-02-06 23:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on a couple of young power bats: Josh Ockimey and Dermis Garcia?
(Dave Bertis from Montpelier )
Yeah, Ockimey had a nice burst there last season. Mixed reviews on the hit tool in our conversations, it's a narrow road for him already, though there's loft in the swing and he realized some of his plus power in-game last year, which is an encouraging starting point. Garcia has a ton of power, but the swing still has a long way to go if he's ever gonna find it. This is not surprising, as he's newly 19. I'd gamble on Dermis' potentially elite raw and at-least-possible non-first-base profile over Ockimey I think, even allowing for the timeline differential. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-06-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Chris, with the article on state of the First Base position this morning, can you talk about the position as it currently sits in the minor leagues? It seems like there are some promising bats coming up, but do any fit the traditional first base profile? I'm thinking guys like Dom Smith, Josh Naylor, Dan Vogelbach, Rowdy Tellez, Ronald Guzman, Casey Gillaspie, Josh Ockimey, etc... Thanks!!
(Matthew from KY)
It's definitely in a better place than before. I'm not sold on guys like Vogelbach and Tellez, but I love Smith, I really like Gillaspie and Ockimey is really intriguing. Not a position I love being "loaded" because, well, first base, but it's nice to see some prospects there. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Ockimey is beasting in A ball. What do you make of this?
(flashtheleather from HELLLOOO BRET WITH ONE T)
Not getting too excited at this point. Fine to speculate, but talk to me when he's in Double-A. (Bret Sayre)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)I might be going somewhat obscure with this question & apologize in advance but if you could have 1 of these 1B's, OF's, & SP's in a dynasty league who would you want & why: Josh Ockimey or Ronald Guzman, Brayan Hernandez or Brayan Emery, Christopher Acosta or Roniel Raudes?
(Max from In an Uber)
Guzman over Ockimey. Emery over Hernandez. Raudes over Acosta. (Bret Sayre)
2016-05-16 23:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat Wilson! Could you name me a few deeper league prospects that you think have a chance to burst onto the scene by season end? In other words, who is this year's Victor Robles and Anderson Espinosa?
(Jeffrey from Bloomington)
Acuna's the early captain of the dreamboat, I think. Josh Ockimey has some pedigree and is tearing up the Sally. I'm still riding shotgun on the Basabe train despite his struggles in full-season ball. Christin Stewart's not exactly out of nowhere, he was a first-rounder last year. But his destruction of the pitching-friendly Florida State League has been something to behold early. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-01-27 19:00:00 (link to chat)Matt, thanks for doing this chat. I just got back from a run to McDonalds. Name a couple of deeper names in the Red Sox system that you think could really breakout this year. I think Roniel Raudes may be one, but I don't know about another. What do you think Matt?
(Bill Clinton from Las Vegas)
Bill, I don't want to tell you how to live your life but you should be able to find some better food than McDonalds in Vegas.

To answer your question, I'll go with a few guys I saw in Lowell this year. Josh Ockimey, Victor Acosta, Austin Rei and Travis Lakins. I'm also really interested in Christopher Acosta. It's easy to forget now but he was about as highly regarded as Espinoza at the time they were signed. (Matt Collins)
