Is this going to be a lost season for both of them? (John from Harrisonburg) | There are reports here and there. Kaprielian has recently begun throwing again after having had some shoulder discomfort while rehabbing his TJ injury. Holmes is less clear. There was a vague shoulder injury that was deemed likely severe and not much since then. With either one, shoulders are more scary for me than elbows. With Kaprielian back to at least some activity there is some hope there, but the timetable for either one is up in the air right now. Lost season would be the best guess. (Scott Delp) |

Which SP and position player would you choose and also your overall pick, taking into account not only ceiling/floor but also proximity to the bigs (the closer the better). (paladin from philippines) | I really like a bunch of those dudes. Calhoun can be a special hitter, but he's a butcher defensively and loses value if (when) he moves to the OF. Allard and Garrett are two really high-upside arms, and Alvarez could turn into any pitcher you can think of (good or bad). Recent reports have him working primarily on FB command, which isn't surprising for a prospect in the lower minors. The ingredients are all there for a pitcher with three potential average or higher offerings, with the FB/CB both potentially plus offerings. He has the durability and frame I want in a SP. Is it a case of bad depth, or not enough high-end talent?
Seems some guys are emerging, like Taylor, Arcia, Harrison, Lara, Gatewood, etc (Bart Bennison from The rivers) | I love this question. The answer is a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B.
The guys you mentioned are mostly guys who are in the system just this past season, where they seemed to make investing in the farm a priority (Harrison, Lara, Gatewood, Medeiros). I think that's a great shift in strategy for them, but the question is whether it's a great concept with poor execution. For example - they signed Kodi Medeiros for $2.5M as the 12th overall pick, saving some slot money so they could spend on Harrison and Gatewood. Grant Holmes - once viewed as a possible top-10 selection slipped to 22nd-overall and *also* signed for $2.5M. Holmes is now viewed as a top-100 quality prospect while a lot of scouts view Medeiros as a LOOGY. Good idea, but was that executed ideally? I'll say no. On top of that, Gatewood's consistency in selling out for power raised a lot of questions about his selection with that second 1st-rounder. It's too soon to tell whether that was a good selection or not (for most picks, anyway) and Gatewood looked good in BP in my viewing, but it raised some eyebrows at the time. Harrison seems like a gem, at this point though! Ultimately, they have some high-end talent but it's super far away and carries a lot of risk (Lara may not be an infielder), and the other talent just isn't very exciting (Taylor). However Holmes signed for over slot and Medeiros signed for underslot. Who's to say Holmes would have signed for underslot had he gone 12th? People always rave about Monte Harrison while questioning Medeiros going so high. I just tell them to pretend their draft position was switched. (Mokajige from Sheboygan, WI) | The point though is, they signed for the same amount of money. It's possible Holmes postured that he wouldn't sign for said amount and the Brewers believed him. I don't know that that's the case or not, but it would at least suggest that they didn't do enough homework then. Even so, it's possible they did their work and he just folded to LA where he wouldn't to MIL. Even if you want to play that game though, Brandon Finnegan (another possible LOOGY in the end) signed for even less than Medeiros ($2.206M), already reached the majors and might have a better shot at starting.
I'm not trying to take shots here, but hindsight being what it is, it looks like they could have come away with a better player at 12th overall, while still taking the shots they did on Harrison and Gatewood. I don't think it's as simple as flipping their draft positions either. Harrison is a great prospect to have, but he's still extremely risky and even upon redraft, likely wouldn't go in the range you're talking about. (Craig Goldstein) |

I own 5 of the top 23 or so picks in our upcoming prospect draft, but my prospect list is very strong and I don't just want to drop anyone to roster one of my draft picks. Can you please rank these guys according to their trade value in my deep league. Hitters - Almora, Baretto, Devers, Frazier, Margot, Mondesi, Mejia, Phillips, Vogelbach. Pitchers - M Almonte, E Diaz, M Feliz, Gohara, Osuna, Hader, Lively. Which of these pitchers would you drop in order to roster someone like Tyler Beade, Grant Holmes, or other guys likely to be there in the 15-25 area of a draft? (username49 from Ohio) | Another good question for the Bat Signal. I can't rank all of them without taking plenty of time, but the guys I'd drop in favor of Beede or Holmes are Hader and Lively. Is there a big difference between the arms I listed and pitchers like Kyle Freeland and Grant Holmes? (Brandon from AZ) | Probability (though I'd maybe quibble with the statement that a #4 starter is more valuable with a true shutdown reliever). Burdi's likelihood of being a shutdown closer is much greater than the probability that Ross/Feliz/Diaz become mid-rotation arms. And he's closer, from a developmental standpoint, as well. Upside/probability combo favors both Freeland/Holmes over the trio you mentioned, and I'd be willing to bet Freeland/Holmes could both handle themselves in a big league pen right now, which I wouldn't necessarily say with the same conviction for Ross/Feliz/Diaz.
