2020-12-18 12:00:00 (link to chat)How do you see the Marlins 2B/SS situation working out this year/the future? Is Isan Diaz a long-term solution at 2B? Is Chisholm the long-term SS or a better fit at 2B?
(Scott from FLA)
Jazz is an above-average shortstop now, and could get to plus with more MLB reps. I didn't understand why they played Rojas (who granted is fine there himself) over him given the latter's flexibility. Both Rojas and Berti strike me as useful second-division starter types but if you are serious about competing you'd prefer they be 400 PA flex types. That said I don't know that Diaz or Chisholm are the short term answer. Jazz could use a consolidation year in Triple-A and Diaz has struggled to make enough contact in the majors. If you are transitioning to the competition window (which the Marlins should be) you might want the surety for 2021 over the upside. I do think long term Jazz figures it out and is the every day SS, I am less sure about Diaz, and you could see Jose Devers in the mix there soon. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-09-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jesse! Thanks again for the rankings! I was wondering what your thoughts are on Isan Diaz and Abraham Toro. I have both in my minors in a deep dynasty league with 30 minor spots. Was hoping they would become decent bench pieces but now I'm thinking of cutting for some lotto ticket J2 guys. What are your thoughts?
(Alex from Texas)
I would hold in a deep league unless you are replacing with like prospects. It is not like you will see a value boost for any international prospects until next June/July anyway. Of course, if someone like Maximo Acosta is available (or a prospect ranked higher on the Top-500), then go for it. Between the two, I prefer Diaz. (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)One unsettled job competition is 2B in Oakland. I've picked up Franklin Barreto in a few places, thinking he might earn a full-time job and make good on his pedigree (he's still just 23 or 24). What do you think of his prospects for 2020? And in a dynasty, would you rather take a flier on him or someone with a safer job like Isan Diaz?
(Pete from Providence)
Barreto likely receives plenty of playing time this year, but he is far from guaranteed a full-time job, especially with Tony Kemp and Jorge Mateo potentially siphoning off plate appearances. I do like Barreto as a late flier in most formats. He has plus raw power and speed. Just unclear if he will ever make enough contact to stay afloat. Barreto is still young, though (just turned 24 in February), so I am holding out some hope for fantasy relevance as soon as 2020.

That said, I do prefer Isan Diaz who has a more secure role (granted, it comes with a short leash) and plenty of upside himself (think .260/25/5). (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)With second base as shallow as it is at the top, why is Isan Diaz not getting more love as a sleeper for decent fantasy production this year? Thoughts?
(NoBigLeagueChooForYu from Atlanta )
It is difficult to get behind a player who had a 63 DRC+ in his first 201 plate appearances. I still have faith and I think he could produce a .240/20/5 pace this year with upside for more long term. (Jesse Roche)
2019-12-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bit of a rough landing this year for Isan Diaz at the major-league level. Where do you think he'd rank if he were still eligible for the prospect list?
(Will Smith from Bienvenido a Miami)
I chatted with Collin some about the 25U and I think his ranking there is about right. He was good enough in AAA that he'd be a backend 101 guy, which is about where he slotted in amongst the 25U prospects. (Miami Marlins Top 10 Chat)
2019-10-30 16:00:00 (link to chat)Tommy Edman or Isan Diaz for future?
(The Colonel from Pasadena, CA)
I'm an Edman guy at this point (Craig Goldstein)
2019-09-23 20:00:00 (link to chat)Shed Long (hot!) or Isan Diaz (not!) for future? And how much do these ~150 ABs change your view on them?
(Shooty Babbitt from Oaktown, CA)
I like both of them a lot. The ~150 ABs has made me like Long more and for Diaz, I just think he needs to see a full season's worth of pitching to adjust. It's a powerful, smooth and aggressive swing - and he's going to be very good. This isn't a Lewis Brinson situation at all. And how could you not love Shed Long? I think that swing - though a little quirky - has 15 HR potential. While I expect him to be a .270s hitter, he's got speed, versatility, and discipline. Sounds like a leadoff hitter on the Mariners to me. (Tyler Oringer)
2019-09-23 20:00:00 (link to chat)Could you rank these 2B: Biggio, Hoerner, Chavis, Isan Diaz, Shed Long, Solak, Dubon, Edman. Any you especially like?
(The Colonel from Pasadena, CA)
Like Biggio, Hoerner, Chavis, Edman, Long and Diaz. Big fan of Biggio and Hoerner. I really like Long's overall profile, but admit that he could work out that swing a tad more. Love Chavis' hit and game power more than most, but not the glove or anything else for that matter. (Tyler Oringer)
2019-09-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. Can Isan Diaz hit enough to matter or are we looking at a .220 ceiling?
(sykklone from IA)
I think he can do better than that, but the question is whether there'll be enough pop and on-base to matter. If he's .250 with moderate slugging, it's not an endearing profile anyway. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-07-31 12:00:00 (link to chat)Still waiting for Isan Diaz to get the call? What are the Marlins waiting for? There can't be a market (trade) for Starlin Castro, right? Do you have any MLB (projection) comps for Isan Diaz?
(ironcityguys from urban area)
If I had to guess I bet he comes up in September. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)For all the talk of Gavin Lux lately, doesn't Isan Diaz seem like the premiere shortstop prospect for the rest of 2019, at least?
(Jeff from Miami)
For contributing over the final two months? He seems like a pretty good bet. The Marlins have no reason not to play him and even if Lux does get the call, the Dodgers have so many pieces he'll be tough to rely on in fantasy. Luis Urias has got the jump on Diaz already, though, and he could easily be the most valuable the rest of the way. (Darius Austin)
2019-07-09 12:00:00 (link to chat)Isan Diaz: has he made meaningful improvements this year or is it just ball magic? Both Alzolay and Harold Reynolds sung his praises at the Futures Game.
(Slippery Pete from The barge)
Nah, it's pretty good now. He was one of the last cuts for the Midseason 50. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)When do you think Isan Diaz gets the call in Miami? Is 2B his best position or would 3B help him with his range?
(ironcityguys from urban area)
I hope it's by August. I don't think Miami has any reason not to play him. It's been a bit since I've seen him but I liked him as a second-sacker. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-07-01 12:00:00 (link to chat)Isan Diaz = baby Cano?
(Bort from Sprungfield)
Normally I'd just say, don't comp hall of famers, but since, wellllllllll ya know, I'll just say don't comp 60 WARP players. The hit/power profile is very different too. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-06-21 15:00:00 (link to chat)What can we expect from Isan Diaz? The Marlins are going nowhere what are they waiting for?
(sykklone from IA)
Yeah, seems like he's ticked all the boxes. Thing is, he hasn't played anything but 2B in AAA (if my quick search is accurate). I guess Starlin Castro is blocking him? If they could move Starlin, Diaz would be up within minutes. Either way, we'll see him sometime this summer. (Jon Hegglund)
2019-06-05 21:00:00 (link to chat)Jesus Sanchez, Estevan Floria, Isan Diaz...buy/sell/hold in dynasty points?
(Jojo from SD)
If I had to match up one with each, I'd hold Florial, sell Sanchez (he's the highest valued publicly) and I'd buy Diaz. (Mr. President Bret Sayre)
2019-06-07 12:00:00 (link to chat)Which of the following Marlins at AAA should I hold in a dynasty league: Isan Diaz, Monte Harrison or Lewis Brinson?
(sportsguy21792 from m)
Diaz and Harrison were similarly tiered in our Midseason 50 draft (not on it, but a lower tier on the long list), but for fantasy purposes the power/speed combo gives Harrison the clear edge here. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Isan Diaz resurfaced as a top 100 type?
(Lennie from East coast)
Yeah I think he's in range. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-02-06 21:00:00 (link to chat)Worth holding on to Isan Diaz or should I look for a sucker in a points league? Not asking for me... asking for a friend.
(Sean Miller from 65th and Cottage Grove)
I don’t think Diaz is gonna be the guy we hoped he’d become a few years ago, but I do think he’s an everyday starter, especially on a second-division squad like Miami. The dream is he gets to .280 with 25 bombs on a regular basis, but I’d argue that’s his ceiling. Also, thanks for asking a question or eighty Sean/Shawn/Shaun/S. - BC (Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre)
2018-12-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)16 team Dynasty league with 25 keepers, what order would you keep the following please: Isan Diaz, Corey Ray, Estavan Florial, Brendan Rodgers, Kopech, Peter Lambert & Widener. Thanks!
(marco polo from Italy)
Rodgers, Kopech, Florial, Ray, Diaz, Lambert and Widener for me. (Mark Barry)
2018-04-20 12:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on the following guys who've got off to rough starts in the minors this year: Bauers, Bobby Bradley, Neuse, Isan Diaz, Hiura? On the MLB side - do you believe in Pivetta's improved start to the season?
(Fessi's back from SWFC)
I think it's a bit too early to move guys around, up or down. It's literally two weeks of baseball. I won't even kill Rodgers this early, as I wrote about today, and I personally saw him look incredibly rough. I think it's especially true of hitters. Pitchers you can see the regression or jump in the stuff earlier, see Peter Lambert going from 89-92 to 92-94.

Also, I know I essentially host a Phillies podcast now, but man you guys have a lot of Nick Pivetta questions. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-02-28 20:00:00 (link to chat)Isan Diaz is a top ___ prospect in fantasy and his ceiling is .___, __hr and __sb. Thanks
(Jojo from Sd )
150. 30 ,15. Not sure he does both in the same season though. (Eddy Almaguer)
2018-01-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you prefer in a dynasty league that has OBP instead of AVG and an additional OPS category: Ryan Mountcastle or Isan Diaz? Dan vogelbach over either?
(moehk21 from West Hollywood)
I don't see a path to long term playing time for Vogelbach (sorry Wilson). Diaz is more likely to stay on the dirt so I would lean him, but Mountcastle has more upside in the bat. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-11-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I was quite surprise and disappointed by Isan Diaz' poor 2017 season, JP. But I read recently (KLaw, I think) that Diaz was playing through a hamate injury. Have you heard the same? Because Diaz barely missed a game, until August. Thanks.
(Race Bannon from On the beach, with Jade)
Yep. Had surgery on it. I don't know the exact timeline of when it started to affect him, as our early-season reports were mostly in line with the strong 2016 ones. Does inject some risk into the profile since a lot depends on his pop. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-09-07 20:00:00 (link to chat)Within the context of a deep dynasty, if you were going to load up on prospects with an ETA of late 2018/2019/early 2020 for a single position (CI, MI included), which position would you choose and why? Who would some of the standout names be for you?
(Punchoutpappy from First In Flight)
I'd load up on shortstops because a lot of non-shortstops in the majors started out as shortstops. Plus, the current crop is deep: Gleyber Torres, Kevin Maitan, Delvin Perez, Brandan Rodgers, Willy Adames, Bo Bichette, Jorge Mateo, Nick Gordon, Isan Diaz... (Scooter Hotz)
2017-09-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Isan Diaz and Trent Clark?
(sykklone from IA)
Diaz obviously went backward a bit this year. Arm, speed, motions say he's going to be a second baseman, not a shortstop. Still has the natural power and a bit of an approach, though. I think he wants to be really good, so he might just make the improvements necessary to actually be good.

Can't say I like Clark as much. The steals were great to see this year, but he has all of Diaz's offensive issues, plus a flatter swing that doesn't give him a great chance to hit for power the way you want a right fielder to. A flat swing is no death sentence anymore, but Clark seems to have a lot of growing up to do before it's going to be wise to bet on him suddenly letting a coach get in his ear and turn him into a power hitter. The tools are great, but he has to change physically and mentally to realize the benefits of them. (Matthew Trueblood)
2017-04-28 13:30:00 (link to chat)Does Isan Diaz have any chance to stick at shortstop as he moves up? Thanks for taking my questions!
(Ryan from Montreal)
sure, there's a non-zero chance. He's not *bad* but he'll likely run into a situation where there's someone with a better glove playing the position. (Craig Goldstein)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Why so low on Isan Diaz? Is a second baseman who hits .280 with 20 home runs just nothing special anymore?
(Ben from Maine)
Are we that low? I honestly don't know where he ranked elsewhere, but I thought we had him pretty high given the swing-and-miss concerns and the horizon to major league impact. Obviously if he is a 6/6 offensive guy, yes that will be low. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Does a healthy and productive Luis Carpio become a sleeper for the 2018 top 101?
(Rick from Savannah)
The 101 is not a personal pref list, and I think the shoulder injury may move him off shortstop--where he wasn't a slam dunk to stick anyway--that makes it a tough 101 profile without like Isan Diaz's raw, Happ's floor, or Barretto's broader base of skills. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-06 23:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank these guys in dyntasy format (5x5): Ronald Acuna, Isan Diaz, Blake Rutherford, Juan Soto, Kevin Maitan. TIA
(TrickDaddy14 from Hotlanta )
I think that might be my order? Flip Soto and Rutherford maybe? Maitan's a dude that could absolutely blow up this year with normal progression, but he's soooo far away. Soto's in a similar boat, though ahead of Maitan right now.

Let us quash some ghosts, yah? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh5LmcY7p3E (Wilson Karaman)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)I just traded for Francisco Lindor, and am looking to rebuild. I already roster Rosario, Eloy, Devers, Acuna, Robles, Tucker, Isan Diaz, Keller, Mendez, and Martes. I immediately put Lindor on the trade block thinking his value may never be higher, and also thinking I might be able to putt 2 top-20 prospects for him, to go with the rest of my super young core. How do you feel about Lindor's value going forward? Is he a guy I should be building around? I'm just not sold on the guy
(Jmax from Niagara, ON)
I think Lindor is the safest shortstop in fantasy baseball to remain a shortstop for the next decade-plus. I think he's the best defensive shortstop in baseball. He's also going to bat third in arguably the best lineup in the game. I think Lindor is underrated because it's a five-category fantasy profile that maxes out at about .300 with 20 HR & 20-25 SB. That doesn't sound exciting but it is. I wouldn't trade Lindor. Yes, he's a core foundational piece and I'm not sure what else you would need to see to be sold that he's a top three-to-five shortstop. Sorry, I'm a Lindor guy. (George Bissell)
2016-11-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's one Brewers prospect you can see breaking out in 2017?
(Nolan from Wisconsin)
Believe I am obligated to say Isan Diaz at this point. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Isan Diaz or Eloy Jimenez cracking the preseason top 20? I am very bullish on both of their bats.
(TrickDaddy14 from YT)
I think Jimenez has a shot. I'm not completely sold on Diaz given he's likely a second baseman in the majors, but I also haven't had my ear talked off by Mauricio about him yet. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2016-09-08 19:00:00 (link to chat)#1 prospect in 2018, 2019 and 2020?
(Chris from Texas)
This is an extremely tough question because ETA's vary by organization pretty dramatically these days. For example, Yoan Moncada hasn't even been in the Red Sox organization for two full seasons and he's already in the major leagues. I'll indulge the question and speculate wildly. Gotta give the people what they want. If I'm jumping past next season, the two names that stand out to me fantasy-wise are either Victor Robles or Ronald Acuna. The dark horse in my book is Isan Diaz. If I'm in a full-scale rebuild looking years into the future, these are the building blocks and franchise cornerstones I'm targeting. (George Bissell)
2016-09-08 19:00:00 (link to chat)Best Prospect nobody is talking about?
(Dan from CT)
My colleague (and fellow Effectively Wild team preview series partner) Jeff Paternostro wrote a fantastic piece on this very subject at BP this week. You should check that out. He profiles a few of those candidates there including Nationals OF Juan Soto, Phillies righty Sixto Sanchez and a few more...

My vote goes to Brewers SS Isan Diaz...Mauricio Rubio (whose opinion I value highly) wrote an excellent piece on him a few weeks ago. He hit .264/.358/.469 (.290 TAv) with 59 extra-base hits (20 HR) in 587 plate appearances at Single-A Wisconsin...He had a monster second half and is the one fantasy prospect I'm targeting in every dynasty league right now. (George Bissell)
2016-09-08 19:00:00 (link to chat)For the future - Juan Soto or Isan Diaz?
(Eric from CHICAGO )
Diaz (George Bissell)
2016-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Moving forward, please rank these guys on their offensive production potential only... Juan Soto, Isan Diaz, Eloy Jimenez, Victor Robles, Rafael Devers, Ronald Acuna. Thank you
(Randy from Chippewa)
Just offense, I'd go: Jimenez, Devers, Robles, Diaz, Acuna, Soto. That's a good group. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has the hype on Isan Diaz gone a little too far for a player who spent the year in Low A?
(Tom from Cincinnati)
Maybe a tad. But only a tad. There's just a ton to like here. I am still stunned the Diamondbacks moved this guy. Power hitting middle-infielders are a rare breed. Cherish them. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-09-26 20:00:00 (link to chat)Isan Diaz potential? top prospect?
(Craig from Seattle)
He's definitely a top prospect. If you're asking if he'll be *the* top prospect in baseball going into next season, then no, I don't think he'll be that. He could be that going into the 2018 season, though, if things keep going his way. (Scooter Hotz)
2016-09-26 20:00:00 (link to chat)In a 14 team, 40man roster dynasty I've grown board of winning...seriously. So I have decided to rebuild. I now roster an exciting group of high risk players: Devers, Robles, Acuna, Rosario, Isan Diaz, Kyle Tucker, Eloy Jimenez, Kilome, Keller, Allard, and Fried. Then add in young MLBers like Harper, Rizzo, Altherr, Cotton, Cody Reed, Matz, Jake Thompson, and Skaggs. With only 4 teams as suitable buyers, would you be happy with Urias & Gallo for Bumgarner, & Josh Bell & Ryan Healy for Cole Hamels? I likely could also land Giolito. I'm currently trying to convince the guy that Giolito's value has bottomed out. Any example as to how Giolito has been valued in any of your leagues, or what can you tell me about your opinion on him moving forward? Kind of a long winded question, but a fun one! Thanks in advance!
(BPChatsChangedMyLife from Niagara, ON)
Giolito hasn't been traded in any of my leagues, so I have no direct experience with that. I own Giolito in two of my leagues, a deep NL-only keeper league and a deep mixed keeper league. I didn't trade him in either league because in both leagues, I was more focused on 2017 and beyond than 2016.

I don't think I'd be happy with dealing Bumgarner for Urias & Gallo (assuming you're getting Urias & Gallo). I'm lower on Gallo than most. I'm not sure he'll make enough contact to be a great roto player, and I think that even if he does eventually become a productive roto player, it'll take a while for him to get there and the struggles will be brutal.

Assuming you're on the Bell/Healy side of the Cole-Hamels-for-Josh-Bell-and-Ryon-Healy trade, I'd hang on to Hamels, too. I haven't seen enough from Healy to convince me that his big step forward this year will be 100% sustainable, and Hamels is really dang good. (Scooter Hotz)
2016-09-12 23:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of potential does Isan Diaz have? Future top prospect/stud?
(Seth from NJ)
Mau certainly thinks so, he wrote up a full piece on Diaz recently, along with a fairly glowing scouting report. I only have video off which to go, but I'm a sucker for littler guys who can control powerful swings, and he seems to have that kinda vibe. I dig it, I'm in on him.

2016-08-30 13:00:00 (link to chat) Scooter Hotz said Isan Diaz would be the #1 prospect in 2020.....is he crazy or or on to something?
(Dan from DC)
Tons of Isan Diaz questions in the queue, so let's start with him. I'm going to put aside the whole "predicting prospect rankings four years from now is a fool's errand" thing and try to weigh in here. There's a lot of young players brimming with upside that could make a case for that title, but Diaz has as good of case as any. Realistically, I think Top 10 is a more accurate range for where he could be, given a likely move off shortstop and the lack of high grade power. There's always a fresh crop of talent for Diaz to contend with, and it might be tough, even if Diaz is raking in High-A, to give him that top spot over the next centerfield prospect with a bag of tools or the 19-year-old lefty that can strikeout hitters with four different pitches.

Regardless, I get the sense that trading away Diaz is going to be yet another nagging reminder of the disastrous moves made by Arizona's front office. Can you imagine a possible middle infield of Diaz and Dansby? (Will Haines)
2016-08-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)How good is Isan Diaz, and how likely is he to remain at the shortstop position? More likely to move to 2B or 3B if he has to leave short? Thanks!!
(Frank from Red Hot)
Diaz is good. It's that simple. He's young and far off but advanced for his age and well ahead of the development curve. But look, don't take it from me, go read Mauricio Rubio's article on him today. I don't want to give too much away, but it's titled: Isan Diaz Is A Monster. So I think he agrees with me.

I do think Diaz is likely to move off of shortstop. The knock on him seems to be the arm, so I'd expect second base to be the likely landing spot. (Will Haines)
2016-08-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Isan Diaz: great, greatest, GOAT, or American Hero?
(Ron from IA)
Since the beginning of May, Isan Diaz is hitting .301/.380/.543 with 24 doubles, five triples, and 16 homers. I know a couple of orgs that have massive grades on the hit tool, too. If he could stick at shortstop, I'd say he could be great. Instead, I'll settle for American Hero. (J.P. Breen)
2016-08-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)what is the arrival time for a guy like Isan Diaz?
(Troy from WI)
I'd say 2019 at the earliest, unless he lights up High-A next year and gets promoted to Double-A by mid-season. (J.P. Breen)
2016-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Scooter Hotz said Isan Diaz would be the #1 prospect in 2020.....is he crazy or or on to something?
(Danny from Philly)
My question to your question is how much you really trust a man named Scooter....

Your answer should be 'a lot.' Scooter is an earnest name.

I don't know if #1 prospect means '#1 in baseball' or top Brewers prospect. Either way, I will vote for the side that says Mr. Hotz is on to something. I saw Diaz this spring quite a bit in the Cactus League, and wrote about him then. Our excellent Midwest League crew has stayed all over this guy in 2016. Serious offensive upside here, even if he moves off the position. (Adam McInturff)
2016-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Isan Diaz? What kind of potential does he have? Top prospect in a couple of years?
(Dan from DC)
I think he will be the type of prospect who will out-play his projections a little bit once he gets to the mid-high minors. He isn't going to be billed as a 'super tools' guy, but the hitting ability is going to play, I think. There's going to be some pop for a middle infielder, too. He was leading the Midwest League in dingers going into the league's All-Star break. (Adam McInturff)

2016-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Isan Diaz: is he good?, how good is he?, let's find out.
(RussHaigis from Maine)
Gosh I love Bojack. Are you all watching Bojack? It's so good. It hurts my heart, but it's so good.

He's really good, not top 50 prospect good, but certainly a guy who I think will be in the 101. Even if he's not a shortstop, he still has a chance to be an impact guy. The Brewers are loaded. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Isan Diaz a top 50 prospect at this point?
(Dan from TN)
WHAT DID I JUST SAY, DAN.

Kidding. Dan asked this question a long time ago. Sorry Dan. You're alright. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-08-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks James. Given his hot second half, where would you put Isan Diaz's ceiling? Is occasional all-star 2B too high?
(Keith from Farmington, CT)
I think you nailed his ceiling Keith. I'll admit that I was a little bit light on him early in the year but the bat is a 6 with at least average power. I got a four game set with him this weekend and the batspeed is elite with good swing path and the ability to make adjustments. Defensively he can get a little lazy but he makes the plays he should. He should be in line for a promotion before the end of the year. (James Fisher)
2016-08-01 16:00:00 (link to chat)Hello Mike, I've been reading a lot about Isan Diaz lately due to his hot streak for the Brewers. Is he set to become a star in MLB or is he just a talented prospect on a hot streak?
(RussHaigis from Saint Diego)
More likely the latter, but he can be a very solid player if everything breaks. (Mike Gianella)
2016-06-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Isan Diaz is starting to come around. What is a realistic outcome for him?
(Brett from Calgary)
I'm still extremely high on Diaz despite the recent struggles. The bat has a chance to be special with people throwing large numbers around, I'm comfortable putting a 6 on the bat but the barrel awareness and bat speed could lead to it being even better. You're looking at a realistic outcome of an offensively minded second baseman with plenty of pop (15-20 homers annually). (James Fisher)
2016-05-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)What in the world is going on with Isan Diaz? Slash line is atrocious and he didn't pass the eye test he looked lost at the plate when I saw him last week. Should we be worried?
(ZT from Milwaukee)
This is a case of the league making an adjustment on Diaz and he just hasn't made an adjustment to what they are doing to him. He still has the batspeed and pop that made me so high on him to begin with but the strikeouts are troubling. Let's give him another month and check back on him. (James Fisher)
2016-04-25 23:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance you can hit us with some knowledge on some Low Minor prospects from the Rangers system in Ronald Guzman, Travis Demeritte, & Jairo Beras? What about from the Brewers in Monte Harrison & Isan Diaz?
(David from Atlantis)
Sure! I filed a report on Guzman last summer, you can find that here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=263

Wasn't a fan. Would it shock me if he turned into a good hitter with moderate power? No. He was really searching for it when I saw him though. Some pleasant elements to his swing, but I didn't love his physicality and he showed no ability to hold himself together when he tried to turn on balls.

Demeritte I just saw and submitted some notes on, those'll be up this week in one of our "Notes From the Field" pieces. Beras was injured during my first look at High Desert, so have to wait on him.

I haven't seen either Diaz or Harrison in person. Was bummed the former got shipped out last winter like 146 other would've-been-great-to-watch-at-Visalia prospects. James Fisher wrote about him last week, you can find that here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28975 (Wilson Karaman)
2016-03-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you like Isan Diaz? Potential t100 guy?
(Jackson from New Jersey)
Absolutely. I'm very high on Diaz. In my mind, he will be a top 100 guy if and when he just shows his toolset at a higher level of the minors.

I'm not at all comparing his statistical outputs to Roughned Odor, but I'll say this: When I see a left-handed-hitting second baseman who has a strong hit tool, more thump than you're expecting from more strength in his lower-half and more batspeed than I generally see in this body type/positional profile, and a high-energy style of play? I do see some Odor similarities, if only in his toolset and the 'style' of player that he is.

Again, to be clear, I am not saying Isan Diaz is exactly Roogie.

However, that should show you what I think of him, and how high I am on his performance in the Pioneer League last year-not to mention my looks at him in Spring Training this year. The guy has a natural feel to hit that you just can't teach. He hits, and hits, and hits some more. Some Brewers personnel have him penciled in sticking at shortstop, but I'm fairly convicted he's manning the keystone. I'm undeterred, however. (Adam McInturff)
2016-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Yo Wilson, got 3 prospects that I don't know much about in Isan Diaz, Desmond Lindsay, & Wilkerman Garcia. Any chance you know more about them then what I know?
(Leonard from None of Your Business)
Diaz can really hit, but I wouldn't go *too* nuts scouting his stat line in the high-octane Pioneer League, particularly re: the steals. Wrote him up here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28307

Lindsay cracked Bret's top 30 of 2015 signees. Higher real-world value, but can be a quicker mover & a decent floor type. Notes: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28307

Garcia is a high helium alert, with the chance to bust onto a bunch of lists by this time next year after jumping stateside and holding his own at 17 last year. Notes: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28428 (Wilson Karaman)
2016-02-03 20:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Isan Diaz is a year away from becoming a Victor Robles type hype skyrocketing up the charts?
(Viktor from Baltimore)
In fantasy, maybe. He's not nearly the defender Robles is, so I can't see him making the kind of jump Robles did on "real life" lists. (Greg Wellemeyer)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)I'm asking this question everywhere I can, but can't get a real read on the player. Isan Diaz. Is the breakout this year for real, or something fueled by the hitter friendly Pioneer League? What type of player are we looking at here?
(James from Scottsdale)
This is a player I hope to get a serious and extended look at next year as he should hopefully be in Kane. There's one word that keeps popping up when it comes to Diaz: bat speed. Al Skorupa had his thoughts on Diaz in his chat a few weeks ago and it echos a sentiment that Diaz has the barrel control and bat speed to believe in the offensive outburst he's posted in 2015. Diaz has some defensive chops but it's likely he slots over from short to second base in the long run. Overall that's definitely a dude to keep your eyes on. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)I've been hanging on to my last $1 forever in my dynasty league. Here are a few guys who have risen up my list. Looking for most upside here. Who should I spend my $1 on? Domingo Acevedo,Jordan Patterson,Kevin Padlo,Wilson Contreras,Harold Ramirez,Johan Mieses,Chad Pinder,Isan Diaz,Willy Garcia,Yairo Munoz
(TheDave from AR)
I'd throw that dollar on Isan Diaz, Wilson Contreras and Yairo Munoz in that order. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-09-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Al, thanks for the chat! Isan Diaz has had a marvelous season for the D-backs, showing more power than we anticipated and he's still playing short. Ultimately, does he move to second and do you think his power is something that will carry on going forward?
(jwise224 from DTLA)
Saw Isan on the backfields this Spring and a few times over last couple years. I think he's a 2B. Just doesn't have the footspeed or actions for shortstop, but he improved enough where I had to stop and think about it... so maybe some team could play him there. I just wouldn't. He doesn't run like a shortstop and I don't think it will get any better as he reaches mid 20's. I'm not shocked at all by his power. There aren't many guys who create the kind of bat speed Isan does. The Robbie Cano comp has been thrown out there a billion times, but he really does have that swing and look. I didn't expect Isan to hit so well this early, but I was mostly concerned with an overly patient approach at the plate. He put together some timid at bats for me against atrocious high school pitching and that always concerns me. You don't need to be showing scouts you're looking for a pitch in a certain quadrant when you're facing a terrible high school pitcher who can't throw a strike and is sitting 70mph. Overall I think the guy is a league average type 2B starter. (Al Skorupa)
