2020-12-18 12:00:00 (link to chat)How do you see the Marlins 2B/SS situation working out this year/the future? Is Isan Diaz a long-term solution at 2B? Is Chisholm the long-term SS or a better fit at 2B?
(Scott from FLA)		Jazz is an above-average shortstop now, and could get to plus with more MLB reps. I didn't understand why they played Rojas (who granted is fine there himself) over him given the latter's flexibility. Both Rojas and Berti strike me as useful second-division starter types but if you are serious about competing you'd prefer they be 400 PA flex types. That said I don't know that Diaz or Chisholm are the short term answer. Jazz could use a consolidation year in Triple-A and Diaz has struggled to make enough contact in the majors. If you are transitioning to the competition window (which the Marlins should be) you might want the surety for 2021 over the upside. I do think long term Jazz figures it out and is the every day SS, I am less sure about Diaz, and you could see Jose Devers in the mix there soon. (Jeffrey Paternostro)

What are your thoughts?
(Alex from Texas)		I would hold in a deep league unless you are replacing with like prospects. It is not like you will see a value boost for any international prospects until next June/July anyway. Of course, if someone like Maximo Acosta is available (or a prospect ranked higher on the Top-500), then go for it. Between the two, I prefer Diaz. (Jesse Roche)

I've picked up Franklin Barreto in a few places, thinking he might earn a full-time job and make good on his pedigree (he's still just 23 or 24). What do you think of his prospects for 2020? And in a dynasty, would you rather take a flier on him or someone with a safer job like Isan Diaz?
(Pete from Providence)		Barreto likely receives plenty of playing time this year, but he is far from guaranteed a full-time job, especially with Tony Kemp and Jorge Mateo potentially siphoning off plate appearances. I do like Barreto as a late flier in most formats. He has plus raw power and speed. Just unclear if he will ever make enough contact to stay afloat. Barreto is still young, though (just turned 24 in February), so I am holding out some hope for fantasy relevance as soon as 2020.

That said, I do prefer Isan Diaz who has a more secure role (granted, it comes with a short leash) and plenty of upside himself (think .260/25/5). (Jesse Roche)

(Shooty Babbitt from Oaktown, CA)		I like both of them a lot. The ~150 ABs has made me like Long more and for Diaz, I just think he needs to see a full season's worth of pitching to adjust. It's a powerful, smooth and aggressive swing - and he's going to be very good. This isn't a Lewis Brinson situation at all. And how could you not love Shed Long? I think that swing - though a little quirky - has 15 HR potential. While I expect him to be a .270s hitter, he's got speed, versatility, and discipline. Sounds like a leadoff hitter on the Mariners to me. (Tyler Oringer)

The Marlins have no reason not to play him and even if Lux does get the call, the Dodgers have so many pieces he'll be tough to rely on in fantasy. (Fessi's back from SWFC)		I think it's a bit too early to move guys around, up or down. It's literally two weeks of baseball. I won't even kill Rodgers this early, as I wrote about today, and I personally saw him look incredibly rough. I think it's especially true of hitters. Pitchers you can see the regression or jump in the stuff earlier, see Peter Lambert going from 89-92 to 92-94.

(sykklone from IA)		Diaz obviously went backward a bit this year. Arm, speed, motions say he's going to be a second baseman, not a shortstop. Still has the natural power and a bit of an approach, though. I think he wants to be really good, so he might just make the improvements necessary to actually be good.

Can't say I like Clark as much. The steals were great to see this year, but he has all of Diaz's offensive issues, plus a flatter swing that doesn't give him a great chance to hit for power the way you want a right fielder to. A flat swing is no death sentence anymore, but Clark seems to have a lot of growing up to do before it's going to be wise to bet on him suddenly letting a coach get in his ear and turn him into a power hitter. The tools are great, but he has to change physically and mentally to realize the benefits of them. (Matthew Trueblood)

I immediately put Lindor on the trade block thinking his value may never be higher, and also thinking I might be able to putt 2 top-20 prospects for him, to go with the rest of my super young core. How do you feel about Lindor's value going forward? Is he a guy I should be building around? I'm just not sold on the guy
(Jmax from Niagara, ON)		I think Lindor is the safest shortstop in fantasy baseball to remain a shortstop for the next decade-plus. I think he's the best defensive shortstop in baseball. He's also going to bat third in arguably the best lineup in the game. I think Lindor is underrated because it's a five-category fantasy profile that maxes out at about .300 with 20 HR & 20-25 SB. That doesn't sound exciting but it is. I wouldn't trade Lindor. Yes, he's a core foundational piece and I'm not sure what else you would need to see to be sold that he's a top three-to-five shortstop. Sorry, I'm a Lindor guy. (George Bissell)

For example, Yoan Moncada hasn't even been in the Red Sox organization for two full seasons and he's already in the major leagues. I'll indulge the question and speculate wildly. Gotta give the people what they want. If I'm jumping past next season, the two names that stand out to me fantasy-wise are either Victor Robles or Ronald Acuna. The dark horse in my book is Isan Diaz. If I'm in a full-scale rebuild looking years into the future, these are the building blocks and franchise cornerstones I'm targeting. (George Bissell)

My vote goes to Brewers SS Isan Diaz...Mauricio Rubio (whose opinion I value highly) wrote an excellent piece on him a few weeks ago. He hit .264/.358/.469 (.290 TAv) with 59 extra-base hits (20 HR) in 587 plate appearances at Single-A Wisconsin...He had a monster second half and is the one fantasy prospect I'm targeting in every dynasty league right now. I now roster an exciting group of high risk players: Devers, Robles, Acuna, Rosario, Isan Diaz, Kyle Tucker, Eloy Jimenez, Kilome, Keller, Allard, and Fried. Then add in young MLBers like Harper, Rizzo, Altherr, Cotton, Cody Reed, Matz, Jake Thompson, and Skaggs. With only 4 teams as suitable buyers, would you be happy with Urias & Gallo for Bumgarner, & Josh Bell & Ryan Healy for Cole Hamels? I likely could also land Giolito. I'm currently trying to convince the guy that Giolito's value has bottomed out. Any example as to how Giolito has been valued in any of your leagues, or what can you tell me about your opinion on him moving forward? Kind of a long winded question, but a fun one! Thanks in advance!
(BPChatsChangedMyLife from Niagara, ON)		Giolito hasn't been traded in any of my leagues, so I have no direct experience with that. I own Giolito in two of my leagues, a deep NL-only keeper league and a deep mixed keeper league. I didn't trade him in either league because in both leagues, I was more focused on 2017 and beyond than 2016.

I don't think I'd be happy with dealing Bumgarner for Urias & Gallo (assuming you're getting Urias & Gallo). I'm lower on Gallo than most. I'm not sure he'll make enough contact to be a great roto player, and I think that even if he does eventually become a productive roto player, it'll take a while for him to get there and the struggles will be brutal.

Assuming you're on the Bell/Healy side of the Cole-Hamels-for-Josh-Bell-and-Ryon-Healy trade, I'd hang on to Hamels, too. I haven't seen enough from Healy to convince me that his big step forward this year will be 100% sustainable, and Hamels is really dang good. (Scooter Hotz)

(Dan from DC)		Tons of Isan Diaz questions in the queue, so let's start with him. I'm going to put aside the whole "predicting prospect rankings four years from now is a fool's errand" thing and try to weigh in here. There's a lot of young players brimming with upside that could make a case for that title, but Diaz has as good of case as any. Realistically, I think Top 10 is a more accurate range for where he could be, given a likely move off shortstop and the lack of high grade power. There's always a fresh crop of talent for Diaz to contend with, and it might be tough, even if Diaz is raking in High-A, to give him that top spot over the next centerfield prospect with a bag of tools or the 19-year-old lefty that can strikeout hitters with four different pitches.

Regardless, I get the sense that trading away Diaz is going to be yet another nagging reminder of the disastrous moves made by Arizona's front office. Can you imagine a possible middle infield of Diaz and Dansby? (Will Haines)

(Frank from Red Hot)		Diaz is good. It's that simple. He's young and far off but advanced for his age and well ahead of the development curve. But look, don't take it from me, go read Mauricio Rubio's article on him today. I don't want to give too much away, but it's titled: Isan Diaz Is A Monster. So I think he agrees with me.

I do think Diaz is likely to move off of shortstop. The knock on him seems to be the arm, so I'd expect second base to be the likely landing spot. (Will Haines)

I don't know if #1 prospect means '#1 in baseball' or top Brewers prospect. Either way, I will vote for the side that says Mr. Hotz is on to something. I saw Diaz this spring quite a bit in the Cactus League, and wrote about him then. Our excellent Midwest League crew has stayed all over this guy in 2016. (Keith from Farmington, CT)		I think you nailed his ceiling Keith. I'll admit that I was a little bit light on him early in the year but the bat is a 6 with at least average power. I got a four game set with him this weekend and the batspeed is elite with good swing path and the ability to make adjustments. Defensively he can get a little lazy but he makes the plays he should. He should be in line for a promotion before the end of the year. (James Fisher)

The bat has a chance to be special with people throwing large numbers around, I'm comfortable putting a 6 on the bat but the barrel awareness and bat speed could lead to it being even better. You're looking at a realistic outcome of an offensively minded second baseman with plenty of pop (15-20 homers annually). (James Fisher)

Wasn't a fan. Would it shock me if he turned into a good hitter with moderate power? No. He was really searching for it when I saw him though. Some pleasant elements to his swing, but I didn't love his physicality and he showed no ability to hold himself together when he tried to turn on balls.

Demeritte I just saw and submitted some notes on, those'll be up this week in one of our "Notes From the Field" pieces. Beras was injured during my first look at High Desert, so have to wait on him.

I haven't seen either Diaz or Harrison in person. Was bummed the former got shipped out last winter like 146 other would've-been-great-to-watch-at-Visalia prospects. (Jackson from New Jersey)		Absolutely. I'm very high on Diaz. In my mind, he will be a top 100 guy if and when he just shows his toolset at a higher level of the minors.

I'm not at all comparing his statistical outputs to Roughned Odor, but I'll say this: When I see a left-handed-hitting second baseman who has a strong hit tool, more thump than you're expecting from more strength in his lower-half and more batspeed than I generally see in this body type/positional profile, and a high-energy style of play? I do see some Odor similarities, if only in his toolset and the 'style' of player that he is.

Again, to be clear, I am not saying Isan Diaz is exactly Roogie.

However, that should show you what I think of him, and how high I am on his performance in the Pioneer League last year-not to mention my looks at him in Spring Training this year. The guy has a natural feel to hit that you just can't teach. He hits, and hits, and hits some more. Some Brewers personnel have him penciled in sticking at shortstop, but I'm fairly convicted he's manning the keystone. I'm undeterred, however. (Adam McInturff)

There's one word that keeps popping up when it comes to Diaz: bat speed. Al Skorupa had his thoughts on Diaz in his chat a few weeks ago and it echos a sentiment that Diaz has the barrel control and bat speed to believe in the offensive outburst he's posted in 2015. Diaz has some defensive chops but it's likely he slots over from short to second base in the long run. Overall that's definitely a dude to keep your eyes on. (Mauricio Rubio)

(jwise224 from DTLA)		Saw Isan on the backfields this Spring and a few times over last couple years. I think he's a 2B. Just doesn't have the footspeed or actions for shortstop, but he improved enough where I had to stop and think about it... so maybe some team could play him there. I just wouldn't. He doesn't run like a shortstop and I don't think it will get any better as he reaches mid 20's. I'm not shocked at all by his power. There aren't many guys who create the kind of bat speed Isan does. The Robbie Cano comp has been thrown out there a billion times, but he really does have that swing and look. I didn't expect Isan to hit so well this early, but I was mostly concerned with an overly patient approach at the plate. He put together some timid at bats for me against atrocious high school pitching and that always concerns me. You don't need to be showing scouts you're looking for a pitch in a certain quadrant when you're facing a terrible high school pitcher who can't throw a strike and is sitting 70mph. Overall I think the guy is a league average type 2B starter. (Al Skorupa)
