2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat) | Hey CK! Just counting down hours until my flight up to Oakland for Opening Night. So far this season, A's hitters seem to really be focusing on going up the middle and to the opposite field. Is this early-season noise, or a product of new hitting coach Jim Skaalen? (ashitaka from long beach, ca) | Hope you have a great time at the ballpark; I know it's not really the same thing now that the Coliseum's been mauled beyond recognition, but I sort of feel about the A's home park the way some Mets fans feel about Shea--sure, it's a pit, but it's *our* pit.
I don't think we can put this on Skaalen just yet; this isn't quite like Rick Burleson jumping on Mark McGwire to hit singles to right, and getting the single worst season of Mac's career for his troubles. It's important to keep in mind the talent that's on this year's roster, never mind that we don't have Emil Brown to kick around any more. Adding hitters like Orlando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra gives you a lineup with people who put the ball in play a lot more often than those of us who still treasure the memories of watching Olmedo Saenz or Matt Stairs or Ben Grieve (at his best) taking their cuts. (Christina Kahrl) |
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat) |
What happened to Jeremy Hermida? He looked like he was going to fulfill his potential during the second half of 2007, then blah in 2008. (Fine Man from Ottawa, Canada) | He's certainly not helping any of us resolve the stats/scouts argument over whether or not he had as much upside as his performance record suggested, is he? At this point, he's more Kevin Maas than Ben Grieve, and the fact that both halves of that proposition are a bit of a downer, it's beginning to look like some of us were oversold on those big walk totals in the minors. (Christina Kahrl) |
2008-05-27 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Nate, you still like the Swisher package? The only reason that looks like a good deal to me is that it now seems possible Swisher is the new Ben Grieve. But the two minor-league pitchers they got are struggling, and Ryan Sweeney has no power. Besides, how can an A-ball pitcher with only one good season be the lead player in a package to get a useful, young, cheap major league position player? (oira61 from San Francisco) | Sweeney's is not a great guy to have on a roto team (trust me, I've learned this by experience) but he nevertheless has a 117 OPS+ and he's 23 years old. That is a reasonably valuable asset any way you slice it. The pitchers have been marginal but not irredeemably so if you look at their peripherals. Yes, I still like that deal for them. 2009-06-09 14:30:00 | 2009 Draft Coverage | One of the great things about being at BP is having great help just a few keyboard clicks away. I asked Rany, who did his fantastic series on draft history, if he remembers a draft that was better 11-20 than 1-10. Rany jumped into action for me, and found just one in 15 years: 2002. Top Ten: B.J. Upton, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis. 11-20: Hermida, Joe Saunders, Scott Kazmir, Nick Swisher, Cole Hamels, James Loney, Denard Span. The best example is 1994, where Garciaparra, Konerko and Varitek went 12-14. Needless to say, the top 10 that boasted Paul Wilson, Ben Grieve, Todd Walker and Jaret Wright wasn't as good.
