2018 After the Astros won the World Series, White did a good turn by paying for a high school pizza party to celebrate the championship. And despite limited run with the big club, the Western Carolina product should be pretty happy with the way things turned out last season. Not only did he inflict another beating on Triple-A pitchers, he held his own during a few short stints in the majors, finally channeling some of the power once promised. No, he didn't carry forward the walk rate that once made him so interesting to those who scout the stat line, but the 27-year-old has earned at least one more chance to graduate from Fresno.
2017 White is one of the players who perfectly illustrates the massive skill gap between Triple-A and the majors. Despite a hot start at the major-league level, the game’s best pitchers quickly figured him out. The result was a bat that simply won’t be able to play at first base. White has excellent plate discipline, but he wasn’t able to show the kind of power necessary to force MLB pitchers into handling him with the same level of care he was treated with in the minors. His approach is wonderful and may earn him more shots at The Show, but he just doesn’t look like he has the pop for first base at the top level.
2016 Players picked in the 33rd round with Billy Jo Robidoux-like facial hair and physique and no natural defensive position aren't supposed to even make the Annual, yet here we are. White was drafted as someone for live arms to strike out in Rookie leagues, but he never stopped hitting, capping his rise through the system with an otherworldly two months at Triple-A Fresno. His batting eye is as sharp as they come, but his power is gap at best and he offers nothing outside the 24 square feet of the batter's box. Even if the bat were real, he's at the back of a fairly long line, and doesn't need to be added to the 40-man until next winter.
