BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Converted shortstop Dennis Santana still throws like a middle infielder on the run, but he managed to control his 96-mph gas and developing secondaries well enough to dominate A-ball hitters and cut a path toward eventual big-league bullpen work.

2018-05-25 12:15:00 (link to chat)Can you explain why prospects such as Dennis Santana with a cross-body delivery are generally expected to be relievers?
(leites from New York)
Sure. Generally, it's a concern about the ability to repeat the mechanics over the course of the game, as the pitcher tires and finds it harder to repeat the same release points, etc., combined with some injury concerns built into those types of profiles. The cross-fire delivery makes for better deception and can sometimes add some movement, but that very movement can make it hard to hit spots consistently. (Craig Goldstein)
2017-11-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)A few under the radar prospects I really love: Andres Gimenez, Wander Javier, Danny Jansen, Akil Baddoo, Jorge Guzman, and Dennis Santana on the Dodgers. Any of these guys jump out at you at big risers in 2018?
(hunt4prospects from USA)
Okay it's actually Wander Javier here. No joke.

I like Gimenez too, but he's more of a slow burn profile. The pitchers are likely both relievers (here's Wilson's Santana report http://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=497). Jansen is more a good backup, Baddoo is legit too. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-07-31 23:00:00 (link to chat)Were you surprised Texas was unable to get any of LAs high upside 2nd tier prospects or upper level high floor prospects. Most of us knew they wouldnt get Verdugo or Buehler but I thought theyd at least get a couple of Heredia, Ruiz, Mitch White, Kyle Farmer, Edwin Rios etc.
(Dirky dirk from Buffalo Bills dungeon)
Well, when you're selling a rental in a deadline deal like this, you sort of have three ways you can play it depending on the player/context involved: 1) salary dump, marginal prospects back, 2) quantity return, couple higher-probability/lower-ceiling guys, 3) one centerpiece a step below "top prospect," couple other A-ball lotto tickets. Rangers elected for Door #3. If they'd elected for Door #2, then these are the kinds of guys I'd have expected to be involved. I will say that the fact nobody pried Dennis Santana off these guys is downright crimi-nimi-nal. (Wilson Karaman)
