BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Jimmie Sherfy looks the part of a late-inning reliever, but the whole high-octane profile is reliant upon him keeping his violently whippy delivery in order.
2017 Sherfy has been a tough nut to crack since being drafted in the 10th round in 2013. The former Oregon closer had a funky delivery that was hard to pick up for hitters and even tougher to repeat for the pitcher. After a promising debut, he hit a major bump in the road in 2015, walking over five batters per nine at Double-A. Some mechanical tweaks have quieted the delivery and he rebounded to dominate the Southern League in 2016 before a promotion to Triple-A issued yet another blow to his stat line. His fastball can play above average at times, but it's his plus slider that often gets the job done. With better command, he's a big leaguer. Without, he may just stall out at Triple-A.
2016 Jimmie Sherfy and his wipeout slider held batters to .220/.280/.294 with bases empty and .325/.471/.475 with men on, i.e. it wasn't great but he'll never have another season this bad, either.
2015 There's no truth to the rumor that ABC named Wipeout after Jimmie Sherfy's slider; literally cannot even imagine how such an illogical rumor might have been started. Armed with a 96-98 mph fastball and a max-effort delivery, Sherfy has a chance to be a special reliever.

DateQuestionAnswer
2018-02-05 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the best pure reliever prospect in the minors (as in, someone presently a minor league reliever)? Would you consider a pure reliever for the 101 like Kimbrel and Reed were years ago?
(Mike from Nevada)
If Burdi was healthy he, well may have graduated, but he'd be considered. I like Jimmie Sherfy, but he is what he is at this point. I would never say never, but it's a tough road to hoe when like Michael Kopech could be the best reliever in baseball this year or something (Top 101 with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2015-02-16 11:00:00 (link to chat)You mentioned Arizona with regards to a Navarro trade. Would an unproven relief prospect like Kaleb Fleck, Jimmie Sherfy, Jake Barrett, or Enrique Burgos be a fair return?
(JobaTheHut from Limbo)
Possibly, yeah. (R.J. Anderson)
