2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Chris Jericho once said, "It's art, you don't need pants."
So in the same vein as this quote, what tool would you rather a 3B in the low minors show, Glove or Arm?
In terms of percentile difference, what is the skill gap between the #30 and the #200 prospect? (Liam from Parts Unknown) | #30 on our list was Reynaldo Lopez, who isn't an ideal example for this exercise, but we'll go with it. The 200th best prospect who is also a pitcher is probably...oh, let's say Chih-Wei Hu since I have Rays on the mind now. So that's a pretty significant stuff advantage even if the output is only a half grade of OFP/Likely. Pitchers tend to be more volatile though. On the position player side it would be Cody Bellinger and one of those guys Ben comped to CJ Cron. So again, a grade of hit and power. really. That seems small, but it's a very tough jump to make. Not that it doesn't happen which is why these lists can be volatile from year to year, especially on the back end.
I was really hoping they would do Jericho/Owens for the belt if they were gonna break them up this quickly. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2016-07-13 15:00:00 (link to chat) | 2 Questions:
First of all, if the BP top 50 list was written AFTER the Futures game, I assume Eloy Jimenez would have made an even more drastic jump? How high? I feel I gotta treat him like a t10 prospect, with all arrows pointing up.
Second of all, how impressive was Chih-Wei Hu in the Futures game? He looked MLB ready with a lot of movement on his pitches. Same thing for Carson Fulmer. (fawkesmulder from Zzyzx) | I'd hope the list wouldn't change too much after just one game. That said, I was driving the Eloy bus. I had him just outside the top ten on my personal list. (Brendan Gawlowski) |
2016-05-16 23:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi Wilson,
Chih-Wei Hu has been putting up off the chart numbers in AA this year. Have you seen him and what are your thoughts on him being the next great starter developed by TB ? (Todd from Miami) | All about the command with him. He's got a deep arsenal (including a palm ball!) but none's a true plus/out pitch, so he needs to locate and sequence to succeed. So far so good in the high minors. I dunno about "great starter," but he can be a competent one. (Wilson Karaman) |
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat) | Please rank the following pitching prospects...Francis Martes, Joe Musgrove, Anderson Espinoza, Franklyn Kilome, Colin Rea, Chih-Wei Hu, Wei-Chieh Huang
(Festivus313 from Phoenix) | Kilome is ahead of the rest of those guys and then Musgrove but after that this is where my lack of deeper minor league knowledge hurts me. I'd guess Marte, Rea, Huang, and Hu but to be honest I don't have a good feel for where these guys should truly sit. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-07-16 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Have you seen or heard of Chih-Wei Hu ?
Seems to have gotten off to a great start at Fort Myers. (Charlie from Duluth, MN) | He's a Cistuli Guy. So...No (but you knew that) (George Bissell) |
No BP Roundtables have mentioned this guy.
A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC
Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Chih-Wei Hu threw 454 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2017 and 2023, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2023, he relied primarily on his Sinker (89mph) and Slider (84mph), also mixing in a Fourseam Fastball (90mph), Change (86mph) and Curve (78mph).
