2018 Second acts are often tough, and while Maeda largely held his own, he crumbled a bit at the margins. He was thrice the victim of Dodger rotation largesse, first serving a dubious 10-day DL stint in May for a "tight hamstring" that just so happened to accommodate Hyun-Jin Ryu's return. After enjoying a gentle, temporary workload in the bullpen while a next wave of overcrowding crashed in June, he found himself outside the rotation again in October. He looked right at home in the role, however. His hard slider ate righties alive, and he yielded just one run in more than ten knockout innings with tantalizingly played-up stuff. His incentive-laden deal is weighted heavily toward bulk, giving the Dodgers something else to ponder for the future. One sure thing is that it will be the Dodgers doing the pondering, as they'll control his consistently above-average services on the cheap and flexible until 2024.
2017 The unimpeachable Wikipedia informs us that Kenta means "one who has health and is well-formed." That's perhaps some nominative determinism for the one Dodgers starter to make it through the season unscathed, though it is worth noting he frequently received extra days of rest. Maeda came to Los Angeles via an unusual, incentive-laden contract. His gamble on himself paid off, as he earned $8.75 million in bonuses on top of his $3-million base salary en route to a third-place finish in NL Rookie of the Year voting. Lacking impact stuff, Maeda is the type of pitcher who benefits from an early hook, as opponents tagged him for an .887 OPS the third time through the order. The Dodgers recognized this, which explains how he accrued fewer than 180 innings in 32 starts. If you're wondering what Wikipedia has to say about "Maeda," it means "front rice paddy." We don't have anything on that.

2019-02-06 21:00:00 (link to chat)I was surprised by the Kikuchi ranking, so I’d really love to hear the thought process of his realistic ceiling, as a Good 4th Starter. Even if he is a Rich Hill comp (limited but valuable innings), wouldn’t 110-125 very good innings calculate to a #3-ish at least?
(SGz from LA)
I don't think he has quite the stuff (or the command of it) to be Rich Hill on a rate basis. Kikuchi is a good arm, but not a special onehe's way more Kenta Maeda than Yu Darvish, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with being Maeda. He's pretty good! -BS (Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre)
2017-01-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for evening hours I work days so its nice to see you on at night quick question how world you rank these four pitcher if you were in a dynasty league. which two would you keep. Kevin Gausman, Blake Snell, Kenta Maeda, Daniel Norris,
(OB1 from Tampa)
In that order, actually. Although I have Gausman, Snell, and Maeda all clustered together in the mid to late 40s. I'd go Gausman and Snell, with their youth as the tie-breaker. (Mark Barry)
2016-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Kenta Maeda as a top 60 pitcher or is he more in the 60-90 range? The incentive rich contract he signed should be a good thing right?
(fightingmoose from Manitoba, Canada)
A top 60 pitcher implies to me that he should be close to a No. 2 starter. That's asking a lot. I'd say he's closer to a three. The contract is nice for both parties, potentially, but I was surprised there wasn't more guaranteed cash. (Christopher Crawford)
2014-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Other than Kenta Maeda, are there any other NPBL players that could be posted in the off season that we should know about?
(Mark83 from Jacksonville)
Good question. I don't know. I usually take notice of the int'l players pretty late in the process, 90% of my work is tracking advanced pro pitchers on this continent and even that I can't do exhaustively by any stretch. (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)International signings seem to have huge benefits: (Cespedes, Wei-Yin Chen, Darvish, Puig and Hyun-Jin Ryu). Who are a couple of the next big players we should look out for?
(Silverback38 from VA)
There's not much coming out of Japan. Kenta Maeda is the next pitcher who will come over (likely for 2015), but he's a soft-tossing #4 profile. Cuba has some good hitters in Jose Fernandez and Yasmani Tomas, but who knows when or if they'll defect. (Bret Sayre)
