BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Schultz is a quintessentially Rays story. He was very undersized and played high school ball in upstate New York, so he went undrafted. He then attended small-time High Point University in North Carolina, where the Rays (who scout the Southeast as hard as any team other than the Braves) found him and plucked him in the 14th round. He was already almost 22 when he signed; he remained (and remains even now) undersized; and he had major command issues for years. On the other hand, his stuff (and his strikeout rate) was very impressive. A groin injury severely shortened his 2017 and Schultz is now quite old for a rookie, but he's not without promise—especially as a one-inning reliever.
2017 Your deep bullpen sleeper for 2017 is…Jamie Schultz! He’s had success as a starter in the upper minors thanks to his blistering strikeout rate, but the Rays’ rotation depth and his own inability to avoid the free pass make middle (or late) relief a likely eventual destination.
2016 Jamie Schultz is a small right-hander with a big strikeout rate and bigger control issues. The stuff is also larger than his size, but inconsistency could lead to a life in relief.

2016-09-08 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat George. Can you rank the following young SPs based on talent (exlcuding proximity to majors)? Trevor Clifton, Jack Flaherty, Jaime Schultz, Touki Toussaint. Can I also get your thoughts on the good Basabe brother, and how he compares to other good young OFs (e.g. Acuna, Whitley, Sierra, Mieses, Robles)? GO SOX!
(Anthonyb from Boston)
You got it Anthony! This is a group of starters that I think will all end up in the bullpen, especially Schultz and Toussaint. If I had to pick one, I guess it would be Clifton. I haven't seen Basabe in-person yet, I'm planning on it once he reaches Double-A Portland (in my neck of the woods). The numbers are impressive and he seems like an incredible athlete that is starting to translate those skills into tangible on-field production. I put Robles and Acuna in a higher class than almost any prospect left in the minors. Those two are both top-10-to-15 fantasy prospects for me right now. (George Bissell)
2016-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)BEST prospect nobody is talking about?
(Chris from TX)
I don't know if no one is talking about him, because I've talked about him a lot, but Jaime Schultz isn't getting enough love. Plus-plus fastball, plus curve, good enough change. I think he can either be a mid-rotation starter or a filthy reliever. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Jaime Schultz can continue his command growth sufficiently to be an above average rotation piece in an Aaron Sanchez-lite kind of way? Thanks for the chat!
(Que from Panhandle)
I don't see it. I think he's a back-end guy at best. (Bret Sayre)
2015-06-15 19:00:00 (link to chat)Seems like Jaime Schultz is flying under the radar. I love his stuff. Looks like another stud arm for the Rays? What do you think about him?
(Owen Dyer from Kingston)
He's a nibbler with command problems; reliever for me. (Brendan Gawlowski)
