2020-01-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on what the White Sox rotation looks like in early June? Is that when we see whether Reynaldo Lopez, late-inning reliever is a thing? Or does the likelihood that Cease and Kopech rarely pitch into the sixth to preserve their arms and Gio Gonzalez is as limited as he was last year (he exceeded 5.0 IP in only two of his 17 starts!) mean we're going to see some planned tandem games involving these latter three pitchers?
(stevegoz from Chicago)
They could, and arguably should, try and get creative here. Could try some tandem stuff, use some openers. There's also not as much depth as you'd like given the durability concerns on the staff. The O/U on Ross Detwiler and Bernardo Flores starts could be dangerously high. (AL Central Top 10 Chat)
2019-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you keep between Touki Toussaint and Reynaldo Lopez in a dynasty league where you are competing this year? I have Kershaw and Hill so I worry about injuries, where Reynaldo could spot start, but I’ve seen Touki ranked much higher in dynasty leagues compared to Reynaldo.
(BabyfartZ Mckeezack from France)
Toussaint. (Craig Goldstein)
2018-09-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)The White Sox have had an objectively horrible year as an organization, with the Kopech news being the final nail. Giolito hasn't been good. Reynaldo Lopez seems kind of blah. Other than Eloy, 2018 has been brutal. Is this one of the better examples of how bottoming out for a rebuild can go wrong?
(Sammy from Southside)
It's not what they would have hoped for. That said, it wasn't all that long ago that people were wondering if the Astros had got it all wrong, with the Aiken debacle, and Appel flaming out. The Sox still have Eloy and more on the way, and the likes of Moncada and Anderson are still young and learning. We probably need a few more years before we can declare that it went wrong. (Darius Austin)
2017-11-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Reynaldo Lopez show anything in 2017 that could suggest he sticks in the rotation (albeit, middle-to-back), or think he's still bullpen-bound?
(Steve from Funkytown)
I think you have the luxury of giving him one more full season to see if he can start, but I am not optimistic. Think he is a lights out bullpen arm though. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-07-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is taking the Sox so long to call up Reynaldo Lopez? Why do they enjoy trotting out Holland, Gonzalez, Pelfrey and Shields so much? Yuck!!
(ironcityguys from home)
Lopez is certainly ahead of say, Giolito as discussed above, and Carson Fulmer who's pitched so badly of late.

Holland and Gonzalez have collapsed in dramatic fashion, although they once looked like they might even be tradable if you go back to say, May. Of those guys I'd say Pelfrey is the first who'd get booted out of the rotation.

But Lopez is still giving up a lot of homers and walks at AAA, which he shouldn't be doing with the stuff he has. He hasn't pitched so well that he's forcing the issue or proved he's learned all he needs to learn down there, and the White Sox don't really care about wins and losses this season. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-03-09 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Reynaldo Lopez a sound bet to finish the year in the White Sox rotation?
(JAS from MN)
What does sound bet mean to you? I wouldn't risk the college fund or anything; my guess is that even if he plays up, he's likely to get shut down early in the Scoresheet playoffs. It's another reason why we're never too crazy about taking young pitchers on bad teams--you can't guarantee that they'll be there when you need them most. (Ben Murphy, Ian Lefkowitz and Jared Weiss)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Chris Jericho once said, "It's art, you don't need pants." So in the same vein as this quote, what tool would you rather a 3B in the low minors show, Glove or Arm? In terms of percentile difference, what is the skill gap between the #30 and the #200 prospect?
(Liam from Parts Unknown)
#30 on our list was Reynaldo Lopez, who isn't an ideal example for this exercise, but we'll go with it. The 200th best prospect who is also a pitcher is probably...oh, let's say Chih-Wei Hu since I have Rays on the mind now. So that's a pretty significant stuff advantage even if the output is only a half grade of OFP/Likely. Pitchers tend to be more volatile though. On the position player side it would be Cody Bellinger and one of those guys Ben comped to CJ Cron. So again, a grade of hit and power. really. That seems small, but it's a very tough jump to make. Not that it doesn't happen which is why these lists can be volatile from year to year, especially on the back end.

I was really hoping they would do Jericho/Owens for the belt if they were gonna break them up this quickly. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Reynaldo Lopez in the rotation this year and what kind of upside does he have there? Or is he a reliever to you? And if so, why is he ranked so high and AJ Minter is not.
(Jim from Chicago)
It's possible he's a reliever, but he'd be a better reliever than AJ Minter. I don't think he breaks camp in the Nats rotation (although as first reported in this chat, pitchers get hurt in February), but I think there's a mid-rotation starter in there with command issues that keep him from more despite the stuff. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Reynaldo Lopez is on the White Sox now not the Nats. Does that change the answer at all?
(Jake from Boston)
He is. My brain is basically the consistency of Ruhlman's scrambled eggs at this point in the process. It does. (The Top 101 Prospect Chat with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)I could use some help with my last two keeper spots (10-team dynasty). I am currently deciding between Josh Bell, Franklin Barreto, Jurickson Profar, Reynaldo Lopez, and Michael Pineda. Which two will provide the most value over the next 5 years? Thanks!
(Kevin from Alexandria, VA)
Hey Kevin, I'd keep Bell and Barreto. In a 10-team dynasty, there is so much pitching available on the waiver wire that I wouldn't keep a non-ace level starter. I like Barreto's speed, even if he's not at shortstop long-term. Bell is the interesting one for me. Every time I saw him in person, I came away impressed. (George Bissell)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Drop one: Luke Weaver, Jose Berrios, or Reynaldo Lopez.
(Ian from Canada)
Weaver. (George Bissell)
2016-12-01 19:00:00 (link to chat)Mike, is Reynaldo Lopez a starter or a closer in the end?
(Tim from Stompers HQ)
My gut is closer. (Mike Gianella)
2016-11-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Reynaldo Lopez end up in the 'pen?
(Sean99 from Chicago)
Yeah, I think he's a closer. (Jarrett Seidler)
2016-07-13 15:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Hader, Reynaldo Lopez, and Amir Garrett seem to have similarities in their profiles with similar volatility. Which of those guys is your preference long-term? Why?
(Matt from KY)
I'll take Lopez on upside, even if he's not a lock to remain a starter. Hell, none of them are. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2016-06-16 21:00:00 (link to chat)Who'd you rather have: Reynaldo Lopez or Josh Hader?
(bradmorgan27 from DC)
Give me the little guy with the big fastball. (Bret Sayre)
2016-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Victor Robles a top 5 prospect next year?
(Chad from LA)
That's a tall order to fill. Unless Reynaldo Lopez lights it up he should be the Nats #1 prospect ... the rest I'll leave to the ranking experts, but I imagine he's going to have lots of eyeballs on him in his first full season (Harry Pavlidis)
2016-01-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Quite a tumble from your midseason list for Reynaldo Lopez (where he 19th). It doesn't seem like much has really changed since then, so why such a significant drop?
(Matt from DC)
Different voices in the room, is the biggest reason. My top concern on Lopez is whether he's a starter long term, so I'm a little more conservative on him. (Top 101 Chat with Craig Goldstein)
2016-01-27 19:00:00 (link to chat)Which young arm do you prefer: Luis Ortiz, Frances Martes, or Reynaldo Lopez?
(seddrah from seattle)
Martes (Matt Collins)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Do you expect any of these guys to bounceback in 2016?: Arismendy Alcantara D.J. Peterson Alen Hanson Alex Jackson David Dahl Tyler Kolek Braden Shipley Reynaldo Lopez Sorry for the huge question, thanks!!!
(Max from Connecticut)
I would put my faith in Reynaldo Lopez and David Dahl. Arismendy Alcantara's approach hasn't matured from where it was last year so I'm not expecting him to bounce back. Alex Jackson looked lost at the MWL, he still has talent but that might take some time for him to figure it out. I've heard awful things on Tyler Kolek, high exertion with a terrible body and nary a dependable secondary pitch.

Braden Shipley hurts me. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-06-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank Reynaldo Lopez, Jake Thompson, and Grant Holmes in dynasty?
(Grizz from Chi)
Jake Thompson > Grant Holmes > Reynaldo Lopez, imo. (Ben Carsley)
2015-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)top of your head...top 5 offensive and top 5 pitching prospects left in the minors?
(Brian from MI)
ahhh I won't be able to do that to any satisfaction. So I'll punt and just say guys like Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito and Alex Reyes are some of my favorite guys pitching in the minors. (Harry Pavlidis)
2015-05-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)I haven't listened to the podcast yet. Who is your vote for the next Reynaldo Lopez? Also, has the hype around Reynaldo Lopez gotten even louder?
(Steve from Philly)
Make sure you give that a listen. I really enjoy doing that and could not be more grateful. We are going to go deeper into pitching prospects so that's when I'll answer this but a guy I said could get some real steam was Luis Ortiz. And I think it will get louder once you see the consistency at higher levels. He is special. (CJ Wittmann)
2015-05-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi CJ, Out of Jose Deleon, Reynaldo Lopez and Alex Reyes who would you prefer ?
(Tommy from Atlanta)
Alex Reyes. Lopez may have the biggest fastball but I would take Reyes' FB/CB future combo. OFP for Reyes would be the highest. (CJ Wittmann)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)What are a few names that will be moving up into the top 50 prospects at midseason?
(noplexus from Missouri)
I think Nick Gordon, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Williams are going to make strong cases for jumping into the midseason top 50. Reynaldo Lopez should have a case as well, and I have a feeling Reese McGuire is going to make a big jump. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)Which young arm has biggest upside? Luis Ortiz, Reynaldo Lopez, Blake Snell, Luis Severino, or Yadier Alvarez?
(seddrah from seattle)
I'll go with Tuck's boy Reynaldo here. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the highest upside: Brent Honeywell or Reynaldo Lopez? What are each of their upsides?
(Mark from SD)
Reynaldo Lopez. Looking at a potential #2 SP if everything clicks.

We will have some Reynaldo content on the site soon, I promise. Here is some video to hold you over until: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3R_NBln7wA

Honeywell has been a great story as well. Deep arsenal with potential for three plus pitches, and a mid-rotation starter. Rays are excited about him, I know that for certain. (Tucker Blair)
2015-04-06 20:15:00 (link to chat)Hows my dynasty pitching (16 tm): Kershaw, Cashner, Latos, Car Mart, Fister, Morrow, Warren, Syndergaard, Stephenson, Reynaldo Lopez, Holmes
(Blue from Glencoe)
Rosterbation is best done in private, Blue. (Craig Goldstein)
2015-03-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Can you name some prospects outside of most top 50 rankings that may jump into the top 10-15 tier by this time next year?
(James from Alcorn St)
Obviously not a lock that this will happen, but Margot, Devers, Tapia, Reynaldo Lopez, Alex Reyes, Grant Holmes (Christopher Crawford)
2015-02-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Peraza, Amed Rosario, Reynaldo Lopez, Steven Matz.. all things being equal, which one player is not least likely kept in a dynasty league?
(Ron from Texarkana)
Some double negatives there... I think Matz is the present value/upper minors guy and he has the highest value. Lopez a huge helium arm and Rosario has a chance to be a real premium guy. Pereza is a decent real life player, but 2B prospects... meh. Speed first profile and a lot of questions at the plate. Is his profile (particularly in fantasy) a whole lot different than say... Micah Johnson? (Al Skorupa)
2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat)Reynaldo Lopez!!!!!!!!!! Where do you stand on his future...star or super duper star? Seriously in a dynasty how bullish are you? do you consider him before guys like Crick, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Eduardo Rodriguez, Kohl Stewart and CJ Edwards?
(Festivus313 from Pittsburgh)
I'd take him before Crick or Edwards among the guys listed. Think both are relievers. (Ben Carsley)
2015-01-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mauricio, who do have as some of your favorite Low Minor, high ceiling prospects to keep an eye on for 2015, and are looking to acquire before their stock gains recognition this season, ex. Tapia last pre-season or Devers by its conclusion?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
I mentioned him earlier but Gleyber Torres is up there. Forrest Wall is getting a lot of BP love as well that's a dude I'm keeping tabs on. It's a shame you missed the Reynaldo Lopez train but Tucker Blair just drove that one right into the mainstream. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-02-09 20:00:00 (link to chat)How do you see Marcos Molina (SP-NYM) measuring up? He seems to have a similar profile to Reynaldo Lopez, despite being a year-and-a-half younger, and experienced similar success last year in short-season ball. Lopez's FB may deserve a slightly higher FV grade (65 vs 70?), but it seems that Molina's larger frame, secondary offerings, higher K-rates, and (so far) superior control would earn him some Lopez-like love. Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks for the great work!
(weezypreacher from Denton, TX)
The reports and feedback from scouts/front office types I have gotten on Molina has been pretty strong. Back when I did the Mets Top 10 list, I thought about pushing him up a little more, but eased back a tad based on where he presently is with the overall command of the arsenal. He's still working on finding the identity of his breaking ball as well. Some have suggested that the nature of his delivery may push him to the 'pen in the long run, but I'm on board with him as a starter and think he is someone to be pretty excited about.

For this one, Nick and I talked about him early on, but thought it was a bit premature. He'll probably bust out in a big way this season and make leaving him out look conservative, but the nature of how it goes. (Top 101 Chat)
2015-02-09 20:00:00 (link to chat)What are the scouts thoughts on Reynaldo Lopez? What kind of upside does he have?
(cracker73 from Florida)
They like the fast arm and early overall feel for the craft. Our own Tucker Blair is a huge backer of Lopez and was all over him this season. Thoughts are universal in regards to seeing how things hold up over the grind of the long season. This coming year in an extended full-season assignment will be a good tell. As far as upside, I had him as a High 6 (2/3 starter) for OFP in his Top 10 writeup. That could end up a tad light if he shows he can hold things consistently and the changeup takes a bigger step than initially assessed. (Top 101 Chat)
2014-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)About where do you think that Alex Reyes will be in the top 101? Is he as valuable of an asset as some of the top arms in the 2014 MLB Draft?
(Probably Handsome from Internet, SC)
It will be a lively debate -- chance to fit in the Top 50 and I can't see him outside of the Top 75 (though that's admittedly more feel based on the profile type). I am looking forward to debating the comparative merits of Reyes and Reynaldo Lopez, personally. Might need to start another debate series when the 101 is preparing to publish. 2014-11-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Knowing what you know now, if Reynaldo Lopez were in the 2014 rule 4 draft, how high would he have been taken?
(Ron from NYC)
I love this question, although I don't have the background to really answer it.

Let's dissect Lopez and his game:

- Elite arm speed
- FB that can sit mid 90's and has topped out at 100 mph this season.
- Projectable and athletic body
- Good plane and ball has heavy movement out of hand
- Progressing CH and CB, both flashing average of higher at times and also replicates arm speed.
- Injury history and volatility concerns due to limited time of productivity.

Sounds like a high-round pick to me, even if teams think he is a RP moving forward. (Tucker Blair)
2014-11-04 18:00:00 (link to chat)Reynaldo Lopez got some serious love from your team last year. Realistically, what does Washington have there?
(Brett from Calgary)
I saw Lopez once this year and it was legitimately impressive. At a minimum they have a huge arm that has a chance to be an impact relieve. Best case scenario, if the secondary stuff and command come along, he's a monster starting pitcher prospect with front line potential (Mark Anderson)
2014-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Tucker, thanks for doing this chat. Few questions: 1) Who has been the best prospect you've seen in the AFL? 2) Has there been a surprise or breakout prospect you've seen? 3) Can you give us a good off-the-field story from AZ? 4) Favorite non-BP podcast? 5) Best beer to drink on Halloween, doesn't have to be a Pumpkin beer. Thanks!
(NatsGM from Bethesda MD)
1) Best viewing at the AFL game on Wednesday was easily Jimmy Sherfy. One of the best relief appearances I have seen all season. 95-98 with movement and then a 83-85 SL with swing-and-miss. That's a closer profile right there, and he was commanding the ball in his first inning.
2) You just want me to talk about Reynaldo Lopez more, don't you?
3) What happens at the BP house, stays at the BP house.
4) Rogue Dead Guy! (Tucker Blair)
2014-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Reynaldo Lopez. Now that the season has ended, and everyone has had a chance to calm down a bit, what can you tell us about him?
(Ryan from MTL)
Lopez has an elite arm in terms of velocity, arm speed and plane. I think he showed ability to command in my viewing, and the body profiles similar to a Wily Peralta. The secondary pitches have a ways to go, but he replicates the arm speed and action and flashed at least average. We need to see if the velocity can hold long-term, and whether he can stay healthy for an entire season. He has plenty of risk involved, but the arm is extremely talented. By the way, Lopez is absolutely taller and heavier than his listed size, which I keep seeing people throwing around. His measurements are outdated. (Tucker Blair)
2014-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)This was obviously a big year for Reynaldo Lopez. Did you catch any of his starts? What's the prognosis?
(AJ from Phoenix)
I did not, as he never made a start in Rome, which is my home turf. Tucker Blair's your man on this one. Check out his report. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=205 (Ethan Purser)
2014-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did you get to see Reynaldo Lopez pitch this year? Scouting his stats he looks pretty exciting. He wasn't included on many prospect lists going into 2014. Think he's a 2015 top 101 here at BP?
(mbovie from Baltimore)
I did not. Check the first answer where Tucker Blair's report is linked. I'm excited based off of his report. His name will certainly be in the mix, I'd imagine. (Ethan Purser)
2014-09-10 12:00:00 (link to chat)Congrats on being first on the explosion of Reynaldo Lopez...How high would you place R Him on the offseason prospect rankings both for Washington and nationally? Would he be in the top 100 conversation?
(Festivus313 from Pittsburgh)
Thanks, although I should note that the industry has known about Reynaldo a lot longer than I have. As always.

I think very highly of Reynaldo. He is a no doubt top 100 for me. Elite FB command along with present command and potential for plus command? That is a ridiculous combination and does not even factor in the potential average + secondary offerings. I know prospects tend to be "buzzed" too high, but this is seriously one of the best arms I watched all year. He deserves the buzz. (Tucker Blair)
2014-09-10 12:00:00 (link to chat)Name your favorite "sleeper" Nationals prospect and your favorite Carolina League "sleeper"? Also, are you watching Reynaldo Lopez in-person tomorrow night?
(NatsGM from THE NatsGM Studios)
I'm going to try my best to make it. Unfortunately, I am a Ravens fan and they play tomorrow. Spare me your miserable jabs and comments please. I've had enough this week.

Spencer Kieboom is a 23yo C in Low-A, but I know the Nats like him and he's a potential backup type. I think more role 4 than anything. He's under the radar because of his age, but he's not an org guy. Also, 60 grade last name. (Tucker Blair)
2014-09-10 12:00:00 (link to chat)Rank this dominican arms Domingo German michael feliz Alex reyes and Reynaldo lopez.
(Jeffrey from New York)
1. Reynaldo Lopez
2. Alex Reyes
3. Domingo German
4. Michael Feliz (Tucker Blair)
2014-09-10 12:00:00 (link to chat)Are the Nationals one of the more underrated farm systems? Besides having the best pitcher in the minors, they seem to have a lot of toolsy, high-upside type of guys. And they have Reynaldo Lopez.
(Shawn from Cubicle)
I think they are, partially because I was able to watch Hagerstown all season.

3 impact arms in Gioltio, Lopez, Cole
Nick Pivetta and Jake Johansen have ability
Rafael Bautista, Wilmer Difo, Drew Ward

It's a nice group, and that was basically only Hagerstown. Pedro Severino is a solid defense-first C for Potomac, and they still have a few guys like Brian Goodwin, Matt Skole, etc that could potentially provide impact. (Tucker Blair)
2014-09-10 12:00:00 (link to chat)Favorite breakout prospect candidates for 2015?
(Festivus313 from Pittsburgh)
So many to choose from (i'm going to miss a ton here):

Manuel Margot - Red Sox - I think his breakout season was "technically" this season, but the natural bat to ball ability is ridiculous with him. Red Sox have a big-time talent here.

Josh Hart - Orioles - Poor numbers but the tools are all there. I expect to see more from him in the future.

Can I still choose Reynaldo Lopez?

One other guy I really liked in my brief stint: Marlins Michael Mader - live arm that is one to watch. Don't think it's top 101 worthy, but he could be a solid starter prospect. (Tucker Blair)
2014-08-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Besides Giolito and Cole, and now that Souza and Taylor have both played in MLB, is there a Nats minor league prospect worth talking about?
(Charlie from Rockville)
I have heard Reynaldo Lopez has been hitting triple digits. (CJ Wittmann)
