YearComment
2018 Due to publishing agreements, the 2018 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2018 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2017 He only threw a handful of innings in 2016 after returning from Tommy John surgery, but Simmons showed off the big arm and velocity that once had people comparing him to Craig Kimbrel. While the steam on his fastball and slider may still be there after such a long layoff, the injury concerns also linger. He suffered a few setbacks that resulted in his eventual return being delayed and he was shut down in late September due to forearm issues. Simmons has the potential to become a bullpen cornerstone, but he first needs to put together one fully healthy season.
2016 Simmons was on his way to being a potential Craig Kimbrel replacement until he went down with Tommy John surgery just before spring training last season. He shares Kimbrel's stature, but he sits around 95 mph with his fastball, not 98, and his breaking pitch is a slider, not a curve. So, really, they're pretty different. That fastball comes with serious arm-side movement, though, and the slider bites hard. The Braves built a stockpile of injured relievers (Paco Rodriguez, Chris Withrow, Jason Grilli), but the one who was already in the organization could have the brightest future.
2015 During his time in the majors, Simmons looked like the latest in a long line of quality homegrown relievers. The Braves, perhaps eager to avoid the health woes that plagued . . . well, almost all of those before him, wisely shut Simmons down after he landed on the disabled list with a strained shoulder. Expect to hear more Kimbrel comparisons heading forward, and not because we're all just lazy. Simmons does have similarities to the best closer in baseball—like a high-grade fastball-slider combination—though in a lesser overall package. Health provided, Simmons should be another Braves reliever worth watching.

2014-09-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a 20 team dynasty league. We're allowed to protect 20 players from our 25 man roster yearly. I can protect only two of the following relievers, Brad Ziegler, Shae Simmons, Kevin Quackenbush, John Holdzkom, Hunter Strickland, Jeremy Affeldt, and RJ Alvarez. Which should I keep for next year?
(John from MD)
Again, I'd recommend shooting this one at our fantasy guys in their next chats, but I'd go with Quackenbush and Strickland. (Daniel Rathman)
2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Cam Bedrosian and Shae Simmons? Do either of these hurlers possess the closer arsenal?
(Rup from Lorton, VA)
Yeah, they could both close, but right now they are a long way from getting that kind of opportunity. They should be worthwhile high-K assets in only leagues right now. I prefer Simmons to Bedrock and not just because Cam was ripped in that outing against Houston. (Paul Sporer)
