BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2018 Dropped from the Indians' 40-man roster following Tommy John surgery and a rocky rehab, Dylan Baker has the velocity to be a late-inning bullpen arm but has barely pitched enough above the low minors to know much else for certain about his potential.
2017 Dylan Baker has now been sidelined by ankle surgery, Tommy John surgery and complications from Tommy John surgery, but the Indians believed in him enough to protect him from the Rule 5 draft with a 40-man roster spot.
2015 Much like his actor namesake, Baker seems destined for a succession of supporting roles. He has a lively fastball, a solid curve and a changeup that doesn't earn any adjective in particular. Baker lost some opportunity for further development of that change by breaking his ankle in 2014. He is thick and slow to the plate, and if he doesn't improve the changeup (and most players in his position never do), that adds up to "middle reliever." Which, when you think about it, analogizes pretty well to "played the Attorney General in one episode of The West Wing."
2014 Baker has taken the road less traveled from birth to prospect land, starting his journey in Juneau, which has raised only one big leaguer, and attending Western Nevada College, which first fielded a baseball team in 2006. A fifth-round pick in 2012, the right-hander is now the Wildcats’ finest graduate, firing mid-90s fastballs from a strong arm affixed to a sturdy frame. He has the body to start and the requisite pitch menu, too, though his fringy command and high-effort delivery might shoehorn him into a set-up role. If Baker can harness his stuff and improve his changeup to league average, he has an excellent chance to become the first Alaskan high schooler to earn a major-league win.
2013 Dylan Baker flashes three pitches that could be above-average, but like many young pitchers, he needs to work on his changeup and his command, the two things that will determine his role as either back-end starter or reliever.

(Silverback38 from VA)
Snell has the biggest upside. (Bret Sayre)
2015-04-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)There are a couple of names that I see frequently, Blake Snell and Dylan Baker. What do you know of these guys and who has the higher 'achievable' upside?
(Silverback38 from VA)
I don't know that much on Snell but know he has some arm strength. I saw his velocity was in the upper 90s last start. I have missed Baker somehow over his last few starts. I will see him this year, at some point, hopefully soon. I know he is mid-90s with some command. I would say Baker has the more achievable upside. (CJ Wittmann)
