BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 It’s beginning to look like Refsnyder is a Quadruple-A player entering his age-26 season. After all that he did at the plate in Triple-A during the 2015 season, the second baseman fumbled a larger dose of plate appearances in 2016 and his production was pretty even with that of a replacement-level player. That could be what he is at this point, though we still haven’t seen what he can do with a hefty bunch of at-bats. On the bright side, he appeared to be a somewhat capable defender at a few different positions, which was one of the biggest knocks on him as he rose through the Yankees’ system. It could take a change of scenery to figure out what he’s made of.
2016 Refsnyder commands the strike zone very well, has a little power, a little speed and is learning to play a competent second base. He's got all the makings of a big-league contributor, and certainly looked the part in his brief cameo. He's probably not a star, but he's also probably not nothing. It's the second part of that sentence that had the faithful excited after the swamp of incompetency at the keystone since Robinson Cano skipped town. They were drawn to Refsnyder like a starving man to a hot dog. And then the Yankees went and got Starlin Castro, putting us all in the position of awkwardly putting the hot dog back.
2015 It's finally happened: The Yankees have a hitting prospect ready to graduate. While Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts spent 2014 disintegrating like old-timey vampires at dawn, Refsnyder, a 2012 fifth-round pick, was grinding out levels in the upper minors. He wields trace amounts of power and speed, the amount you're used to seeing out of your run-of-the-mill second baseman, but it's his quick swing and the judiciousness with which he employs it that excites the young people. Refsnyder has excellent contact skills, and is rarely fooled by bad pitches, leading to impressive on-base averages at every stop of his career. It's not an offensive approach that looks good on an outfielder, unless you adore modern Nick Markakis types, which is why the Yankees converted Refsnyder to second in 2013, which was why he wasn't promoted to the majors last year—he's still learning the position. After two seasons, he finally looks at least somewhat comfortable with the not-making-mistakes aspect of the job, and will compete for the starting second base job in spring training.

2016-05-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)HELLO FELLOW NICOLAS. What do you think of the recently recalled Rob Refsnyder? Some Yankees fans think he's a TOP PROSPECT.
(Nicolas Cage, Couples Counselor from Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip)
Rob Refsnyder is going to be a decent enough bench bat for a team at some point and it's not easy to see more than that. When you're without a real defensive home and have middling power, it's hard to be The Bat That Was Promised. (Nicolas Stellini)
2015-10-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)I'm a sad Yankees fan today. What do you think about us in 2016? How do we work Greg Bird in the lineup with a healthy Tex, plus A Rod at DH? What about Aaron Judge in the outfield rotation? Does Rob Refsnyder start at 2B? Do we hit the free agent market or make any trades?
(Howard from Bottom of a bottle)
I think a lot of the older guys performing this year was unexpected and not something I'd bank on in 2016. So yeah, get Bird in there somehow (is Tex gonna be healthy?) and Judge should be ready as well. (Sahadev Sharma)
