2011 Despite a fastball that doesn't top 90 mph, tattooed freak Justin Miller missed enough bats during his seven weeks with the Dodgers that it's a mystery as to why he spent most of the year marooned at Triple-A. He'll hope for better luck with the Mariners, who signed him to a minor-league deal.
2010 The illustrated man's latest journey was back to the Bay Area, as the well-traveled former A's farmhand was given a non-roster invite to be part of Sabean's bullpen makeover. The multiply tattooed Miller won a job and earned his keep early, doing his usual situational shut-down work against right-handers, albeit usually with the team trailing. Elbow problems in August derailed and then ended his season, but one quick cleanup surgery later, and he's back on the road, headed for the Dodgers on another non-roster invitation. He will be a tougher sell in a more crowded pen, but don't surprised if one of the game's great survivors slips back into the picture.
2009 After a dominant performance in situational relief in 2007, baseball's illustrated man kept the same approach he had in '07, throwing sliders and fastballs. He didn't get nearly as many swings and misses in or out of the zone this time around, which cut into his strikeout rate, and elbow inflammation at midseason didn't help things either. The Marlins designated him for assignment in August. He's signed a minor league deal with the Giants, and rates as a potential steal given the risk versus reward ratio.
2008 Miller came back from Japan last year to have the best season of his career and even moved into the Marlins' setup role late in the season. Perhaps best known for his heavily-tattooed body, Miller put the needle to batters last year, posting a 4.0 K/UIBB ratio. He brought his struggles against lefty batters (.324/.390/.544) back with him, though, so long-term success may elude him unless he's handled carefully.
2005 He's gotten tattooed for years. His body, that is. Miller's beefy corpus is covered in ink, so much so that he has to wear long-sleeved undershirts when he pitches. Alas, that's the extent of his fame. Command problems have plagued him, and a hamstring pull complicated his return from shoulder surgery last summer. At his best, he's a back-end innings guy.
2004 Another Oakland refugee from the player development program Ricciardi helped build, Miller is a contender for the fifth starter's job if and when he's ready. That may not be in time for camp, since he'll be rehabbing from shoulder surgery performed last May. Will he still have the big sinker when he's back? They have to wait and see what hell have left on the table. Even then, he's going to have to show improved command.
2003 Miller arrived with Hinske from Sacramento and has the raw tools to make as big a splash. His two-seam fastball and slider combination is absolutely filthy, but it takes him a while to get his bearings, evidenced by a first inning ERA of 11.57 and 11 hit batters in just 102 innings. He went to the Instructional League after last season to work on a more consistent release point and an adequate off-speed pitch. Millerís progress will be a good litmus test of the teaching skills of the organizationís pitching coaches.
2002 Miller hasn't translated his stuff into results yet. If he can stay healthy, he definitely has the repertoireóplus fastball, slider, curve, and change-upóto succeed. The A's have a number of these C+/B- pitching prospects. One or two are likely to pan out, with others used as trade bait. Miller was sent to the Jays in the Billy Koch deal, a boon for his career opportunities.
2001 Justin Miller was the payoff for trading Jimmy Haynes. Since he had missed most of 1999 with an impinged nerve in his elbow, there were some concerns about whether the A's were getting anything. Miller throws a hard sinker, splitter, and slider, and heís working on a change-up. He topped off his year with a pretty good AFL campaign. He isnít just the dark horse but the pitch-black horse for the last spot in the rotation. If they donít trade for anybody and either Olivares or Heredia breaks down, a good camp and fast start will bring Miller to Oakland.
