BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Acquired at midseason from the Reds, Tony Renda spent almost all year on the Triple-A disabled list. He does most things decently, but not well enough to be more than a tweener utility type.
2017 Can we drop the BS about grit for a second? Awesome. Thanks. Because that stuff really gets in the way of good player evaluation sometimes. You either overvalue "grit" because you define that word in a baseball context by loading it up with implications about character and perseverance, or you undervalue it, because you focus solely on the guys to whom scouts usually attach it (short, weak white dudes). Here's Renda in a nutshell: makes a ton of contact. Can work a walk. Both fast and smart on the bases. Not enough power to play every day at second, third or in the outfield corners, not enough arm or raw athleticism to play short or center field. Utility profile all the way, but a pretty good one.
2014 While old for his level, Tony Renda has more in his toolbag than just the heart, grit and hustle that earned him the Nationals' inaugural Bob Boone Award for hearty, hustly grit.
2013 The undersized 2012 second-rounder from Cal has been tabbed as “scrappy,” “a sparkplug,” and “gritty” because he often plays above his pure talent. The easy (read: lazy) comparison to Dustin Pedroia is dangerous because it places an unfair burden on Renda simply because of his size and ethnicity. He is a pure hitter with good foot and bat speed. If he hits in the pros like he did at Cal, he will quickly force his way onto prospect lists even though the tools report will be underwhelming.
