- Brewers OF Khris Davis finished 2-for-4 with homer and two runs scored.
- In his first start back from the disabled list, Brewers SP Marco Estrada fired five shutout innings and allowed just one hit in a no-decision.
- Giants SP Madison Bumgarner allowed four runs on five hits over seven innings.

- Mets SP Matt Harvey threw a complete-game shutout while striking out six.

- Red Sox SS Stephen Drew hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning.
- Astros RP Josh Fields allowed three runs in an inning of work to register his first blown save of the year.
- Red Sox SP Ryan Dempster allowed five runs over six innings in a no-decision.

- Mariners C Humberto Quintero had a two-run homer and an RBI groundout.

- Mariners RP Danny Farquhar picked up his third save by striking out two in a scoreless ninth.
- Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- over four innings in a no-decision.

- Reds OF Jay Bruce had a two-run homer and an RBI groundout.

- Rays RP Fernando Rodney blew his sixth save of the season.

- Orioles 1B Chris Davis hit a three-run blast to break a 3-3 tie in the eighth.

- Mets activated OF Lucas Duda from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.

- Rockies placed OF Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right middle finger.
- The Rockies are recalling left-hander Jeff Francis from Triple-A.
- Giants sent RHP Yusmeiro Petit to Triple-A Fresno.
- Reds optioned RHP Pedro Villareal to Triple-A Louisville.
- Reds activated RHP Jonathan Broxton from the 15-day disabled list.
- Cubs prospect outfielder Albert Almora was placed on the 7-day disabled list with Class A Kane County due to a groin injury.

- Astros optioned RHP Jose Cisnero to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
- Red Sox placed LHP Matt Thornton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 5, with a right oblique strain.
- Red Sox recalled RHP Pedro Beato from Triple-A Pawtucket.
- Tigers released RHP Jose Valverde.
- Indians signed INF/OF Ryan Raburn to a two-year extension with a club option for 2016.
- Royals optioned LHP Will Smith to Triple-A Omaha.

National League:
- SP Roy Halladay (shoulder) will head to the Phillies' spring training complex in Clearwater, Florida on Thursday.
- Nationals RP Ross Ohlendorf (shoulder) threw a successful 20-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon.
- Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list.
- Mets SP Jon Niese (shoulder) is expected to return from the disabled list to start Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
- Reds C Corky Miller left Wednesday's game against the Athletics with a right quad contusion.
- Mets SP Jenrry Mejia said after Tuesday's start that he has stopped throwing as hard in an effort to protect his elbow.
- Mets RP Bobby Parnell (neck) hopes to avoid season-ending surgery.
- Dodgers RP Brian Wilson (elbow) tossed a scoreless inning Wednesday in a minor league rehab game with High-A Rancho Cucamonga.
- Cubs OF Thomas Neal (shoulder) will be placed on the disabled list.
- X-rays on Cubs C Dioner Navarro's ankle came back negative and he's being treated for a contusion.
- Cardinals SP Shelby Miller has been diagnosed with a right elbow contusion.

- Athletics SP Brett Anderson (foot) threw 31 pitches in a two-inning simulated game on Tuesday.
- Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli got back the results of an MRI that revealed his degenerative hip condition hasn’t gotten any worse.
- Tigers 2B Omar Infante (ankle) restarted a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo and went 1-for-5 with an infield single.
- Astros SS Jonathan Villar is day-to-day with a sprained left thumb.
- Twins OF Aaron Hicks strained his right quad on Tuesday night while running to first base at Triple-A Rochester.
- Twins OF Darin Mastroianni (ankle) has been diagnosed with a hyperextended right knee.
- Twins RP Tim Wood will undergo season-ending arthroscopic shoulder surgery on August 22.
- Rays OF Wil Myers came out of Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks with asthma-related problems.
- Twins C Ryan Doumit is likely headed to the disabled list with concussion-like symptoms.

- Red Sox DH David Ortiz has appealed the $5,000 fine he received for his dugout tirade in Baltimore last month.

I don't know where else to ask this on BP, so I'll ask here ... not clear on how pither stats like VORP are calculated for pitchers. Prime example, Homer Bailey has a poor outing despite getting a win (5.1 innings, 5 ER, 3 SO) but the BP stats show his VORP increasing from 28.2 to 29.6.
Meanwhile Steven Strasberg (also on my team) has a much better ERA (3.01 vs. 3.73), better WHIP (1.07 vs. 1.16), and 5 less Ks in 12 fewer innings pitched - but has only earned 12.7 VORP for the year vs. Bailey's 29.6.
I don't get it. I would think at some point VORP would have some correlation to performance.
BTW it would be great if BP added a messageboard / forum function where subs could ask questions like this ...
