March 23, 2010 BP UnfilteredPECOTA Cards: The Final Frontierby Dave Pease The PECOTA cards are finally here!
Thanks again to our beta testers for looking them over, and to everyone for your patience. I'm sorry they took as long as they did, but the upside of the big changes we had to make is that we're all cued up to do all sorts of neat things with these throughout the 2010 season, and I'm going to go out on a limb (which I probably shoudn't be doing at 1:30am) and guarantee that 2011 will be our earliest year ever.

Jivas (649) Wow - I just realized that all of the charts with multiple rows of data are sortable! Clicking on any column header will sort the data in ascending/descending order. It's not yet clear how this is beneficial - for example, sorting the comparable players by year rather than by rank doesn't seem very useful - but it sure is darn cool. We want sortable stats all over our cards, but we didn't make a bigger announcement of this because like you, I'm not sure if they have any value at all in the PECOTA tables. Nevertheless, they're there, and if anyone comes up with a good use for them, please let us know! Mar 23, 2010 14:23 PM Yeah, these dynamic tables are something we're looking to make more use of in various places on the site. I'd agree that for purposes of PECOTA, most people are probably content to not meddle with the default chronological sort, but, well... it's there if you need it I guess. Mar 23, 2010 14:41 PM jtanker33 (47067) Very cool. I especially love the "out of baseball" frowny face in the ten year forecast. Man, that cracks me up for some reason. I like. Mike (54181) Long term projections: 1) Have been fixed? I am still not seeing the power numbers I would expect from the Uptons or Adam Jones. 2) How reliable are they once you get like 2, 3... 8 years out? Has there are ever been are article or study done? Are these mainly for fun? Jamey (208) Check the plots on the players. Albert Pujols projected TAv: Richard Bergstrom (36532) First, I really like the new layout and how historical stats are included. The cards are now pretty sleek. woodruff11 (26954) Is the beta of each projection gone forever? tommybones (1168) Hi Dave, John Collins (110) I noticed that for quite a few players, the list of comparables is partly superimposed over the comments from past issues of the book -- makes it hard to read. Wow, though, lotsa good stuff here. hi there, which browser and os are you using? can you send us a screencap at cs@baseballprospectus.com? sorry for the inconvenience. Mar 23, 2010 13:39 PM Richard Bergstrom (36532) I had this problem too, I think on Ryan Theriot. I'm on IE7 from work right now. tommybones (1168) From a very interesting Strasburg debate over at "The Book:" Richard Bergstrom (36532) Sounds kind of like the Wieters situation from last year, though Wieters had a bit more data... Mike Juntunen (30924) That's not actually how comparables work at all, but I guess it's cool you've decided you know how the system works. tommybones (1168) ugh. It was a quote from a blog between other stat-head projection-makers at "The Book." Why is everyone's default reaction one of derision? Guess what, even if I didn't know how the system works (many, in fact, don't understand it), this would be an opportunity to explain it, not ridicule the lack of understanding. So many geniuses around here, apparently.... tommybones (1168) Oh, and you can feel free to educate them here: leites (17240) Dave - Are you guys going to offer further commentary on the most "interesting" PECOTA projections? The ones that you least agree with? The ones that others might disagree with but you think are on track? smallflowers (38782) There may be something amiss with Aardsma's card. The 90% calls for 105 innings pitched, and his 10% calls for 57! Not sure if PECOTA is "allowed" to stretch a player that far out, given his role. Not sure he should be envisioned in a Hughes/Gio/Tejeda role. philgar (55268) I was wondering, is there a specific page to report missing Pecota Player Cards? Dustin Ackley was in the Baseball Prospectus book, but I don't see a card for him. Thanks, I am greatly enjoying looking through the new pitcher cards!! timhulettfan (16302) There seems to be something very off about the GB%, the chart, and how GB% is projected over the next several years. Look no further than the O's Britton, Bergesen, and Arrieta for examples, tbwhite (361) Looks like Britton is on track for a Cy Young season in 2025 at age 37 according to PECOTA, aided by his .100 BABIP. By the time he is 42 or 43, he should go a whole season without allowing a hit. What's the problem ? R.A.Wagman (32721) I think you're reading it wrong. The ten-year Forecast, with the big changes in 2015 assume he is still in the majors, which, by that time, would require him hitting his 80th percentile forecast (or thereabouts). If you scroll down do the Ten Year Performance graph, with the little box chat next to it, you can see that PECOTA is actually saying that Aumont's 50th percentile has him out of the game by that time. tbwhite (361) Actually no. I understand what you are saying, but to me it doesn't make sense, and Aumont is an example why. Mike Juntunen (30924) tb, what PECOTA is essentially saying is that there's a 2/3 chance that Aumont has a mediocre, Derek Lowe style groundball career in which he's almost surely a marginal 5th starter for the next 3-5 years before he washes out, and a 1/3 chance that he develops his breaking stuff enough that he is capable of missing bats and his profile as a pitcher is quite a bit different; this line of comparables constitutes his 75th+ percentile forecasts for the next few years and is the only one in which he remains in baseball past 2015. tbwhite (361) Well, it's being presented in just the way you are telling me not to interpret it, that's how it doesn't make sense. Mike Juntunen (30924) Baseball players don't change overnight, tb. tbwhite (361) We can't all be as smart as you though. If BP can only sell to those smart enough to understand it(like you) it's not going to be much of a business. Perhaps they could broaden their appeal to the cognitively challenged, like myself, by publishing projections that actually made sense, and didn't include historically unprecedented discontinuities in player performance. Of course if they did, there wouldn't be any need for your pontifications, but such is the cost of progress I suppose. Mike Juntunen (30924) Honestly its not a question of intelligence at all; its more a question of retention (when each article about pecota changes came out over the years, I read it a few times so I retain it pretty well). tbwhite (361) I think this all goes back to the comparable players only being done once, assuming that is true, and could someone from BP please confirm or deny this ? Comps are done once, that is true. Mar 24, 2010 15:14 PM Mike Juntunen (30924) Didn't one of the beta releases comment that the comps were going back to being done once instead of every year of the 10 year and that that had improved accuracy? We initially did do comps for every year. People didn't like the long-term output, and it took a lot longer to generate. Mar 24, 2010 15:35 PM tbwhite (361) I can imagine that doing comps would cost a lot in terms of processing time, and I can also imagine some weird feedback effects developing, which I think you are alluding to. The drop rate accounts for comps leaving baseball. We could roll those into the projections as below-replacement-level, but considering the drop rate and the future projection in concert is almost certain to be more useful and interesting to the average person. Mar 24, 2010 16:51 PM Mike Juntunen (30924) I think you are overlooking a simple fact: ccseverson (24244) Can someone explain the Upside line to me. There is a bold faced "peak" at the bottom which what exactly? On some cards it's the first six years added up, e.g. Alex Gordon, but on others it's not. Not a subscriber? Sign up today!

One thing I'd like to see going forward is a spreadsheet of each player's 10% forecasts. I don't need PECOTA to tell me that Derek Jeter will likely be very good, but I like drafting sure things in the early rounds and I want an easy way to see worst-case scenarios.
Btw, awesome work Dave. Thanks for the extra time you put in to get these out before my draft :)
