  • The Braves aren’t willing to up their offer for Mark Teixeira unless they get more back. While sources tell me that the initial discussion was based on which pitcher the Rangers got back, it’s now moved to what else they might give up. They’re refusing to include C.J. Wilson, especially with Akinori Otsuka on the DL.
  • The Mets are after a reliever–that’s not exactly breaking news. Whether that’s one of the Nats (they’d rather give up Jon Rauch) or one of the Astros (they’d rather deal Dan Wheeler) remains to be seen, but there are still other names that are coming into play. Matt Thornton from the White Sox, Chad Bradford from the Orioles, and Shawn Chacon from the Pirates are all under consideration.
  • The Tigers are also after a reliever, but they’re not willing to give up much, knowing that Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney are coming back. All rumors involving the Tigers seem to be centered on Kyle Farnsworth, but they’ve also looked at Rauch, and asked about Jason Isringhausen and Al Reyes.
  • The Phillies are in the market for a pitcher, but they’ve had trouble matching up. One source said that they might end up being a good third team in a deal, and there have been a couple of three-way discussions over the past 24 hours. How do the Phillies get into those? Because they have Michael Bourn to deal, and would reluctantly also discuss Shane Victorino and Ryan Madson.
  • The Dodgers have refocused their energy on getting a pitcher, but once again there’s some internal strife regarding which prospects could be traded and which belong to the Dodgers’ future. That’s going to make getting a deal done a bit tougher, unless they set their sights a bit lower.

    Update @ 1:30 p.m. ET

  • The Mariners have made an offer on two pitchers, and may make another on a third. Kei Igawa and Cliff Lee are two buy-low guys that could fit in at the back of the M’s rotation without costing too much; Igawa makes more sense, because he will cost almost nothing in the way of prospects, and the team thinks working with Kenji Johjima will help rescue his American career. The Mariners are also still considering Jason Jennings, but that’s if the Astros make him available.
  • The Mets are looking at Luis Castillo and wondering how he’d fit in with Jose Reyes. The biggest issue with a possible Mets-Twins deal is that they don’t match up well on prospects. The Twins have no need for someone like Mike Pelfrey, but do need a slugging outfielder. Castillo isn’t going to bring them someone like Lastings Milledge, who wouldn’t be considered for a Terry Ryan team anyway. A third team is going to have to get involved to make this happen.
  • Melky Cabrera to the Astros for one of their relievers? That’s possible.
  • The Rays have some interesting trading their chips in on Ty Wigginton and Al Reyes. The Yankees would love to have both, while several teams (notably the Mariners, Mets, and Braves) are looking at Reyes as a solution to their bullpen problems.
  • There’s been almost no action on Adam Dunn in the last 24 hours, and that’s despite the Angels pull-out from the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes. Sources are mixed in their interpretations of what Cincinnati is doing.

    Update @ 8:45 p.m. ET

  • Jorge Cantu to the Reds doesn’t make a ton of sense, but the price was right and it does set up the Reds to make more trades. There’s a possibility that this makes Edwin Encarnacion available, though the young third baseman seems to be doing better under Pete Mackanin than he did with Jerry Narron. The team is also trying hard to convince one of a couple of teams to take Jeff Conine, though their price for him is still too high right now.
  • No one expected the Devil Rays to get in on Dan Wheeler; he was instead thought to be going to a contender. However, the Astros still see themselves as a contender, and it’s through the team’s perception, not yours or mine, that decisions are made. The team is still willing to deal Chad Qualls, but this was not a deal made to flip Wigginton. The Astros are also not looking to trade Morgan Ensberg, but he’s drawn no interest, and is more likely to be dealt in August if a team has a sudden need, similar to the Phillies’ need for Iguchi after Chase Utley‘s injury.
  • The Mets seem to be close to something, though I’m getting mixed signals from sources as to what it is. There are a couple teams within striking distance of deals as well, though more have been close in the past 24 hours and fallen apart than I can count. No one–and I mean no one–is budging off of what they think is the ‘proper value’ of their prospects.
