Pitch Type Present Grade Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
FB 50 55 91-94 95 Tough pick-up, late giddyup, some run, can cut it, swing-and-miss potential; deception, velo, movement all add up to a 6 present pitch with true 7 potential, very poor command yanks it down into 5 present range, limited to 55 future unless command significantly outstrips what I'd project
CH 45 55 81-84 85 Solid tumble, hard vertical action, swing-and-miss potential, poor command limits present utility, 55 future pitch if command makes it to 4
CB 30 40 76-79 79 Slow breaker, 1-6 action, quality depth, strike-stealer, poor command; shows some utility as a change-of-pace, mild swing-and-miss below the zone; poor command, round shape limit potential
Overall

Drafted out of Vanderbilt in the third round (101st overall) in 2015 and signed for an under-slot deal, Pfeifer shows quality raw stuff highlighted by premium fastball ingredients and a solid changeup with bat-missing ability. The motion lacks repeatability, however, with violence early and often and very poor timing. A deep, closed-off arm action forces him to come all the way around and over his body, and his is a noisy motion with ample opportunity for timing issues to crop up. Projection to even 40 future command in doubt, though as a left-hander with quality stuff he'll have every opportunity to figure it out. There's ostensibly a path to middle-inning duty down the line, but the motion's going to need a lot of smoothing out to get him there.
