2016 With quick reflexes, easy hands and the ability to steal outs from behind the plate, you might comp Rivera to the fictional Kitty Softpaws. Neither poses a threat to the opposition offensively, given they both lack claws. Following a breakout season at the plate in 2014, the Rays handed the career backup the starter's role in hopes of finding the next Jose Molina. Well, good job there, as he was a near facsimile. He was a solid defender who did a good job "presenting" strikes, to borrow a rave from Chris Archer. Meanwhile, he failed to recapture his inflated home run rate of a season ago and barely reached base 20 percent of the time. His OBP was lower than Molina's worst as a Ray by 17 points, and only 213 points higher than Molina's 2015 line. By season's end, he was relegated to part-part-time duty as Archer's semi-personal catcher. As long as he can flick it and pick it as a backstop, he should have a job; however, he'll never become Puss in Boots.
2015 Rivera has played pro ball for teams in 12 different states and semipro ball in his native Puerto Rico; sadly, his trade to the Rays in the Wil Myers deal won't add one to his resume because he already spent a stint in Jacksonville. Before 2014, he owned a .531 OPS in a half-season's worth of MLB plate appearances spread across a decade. He started the year as the Padres' third catcher and finished as the starter, posting respectable numbers at the plate and shining behind it. Among NL backstops, only Pittsburgh's Russell Martin (who caught 200 more innings) nailed more would-be basestealers. Rivera's pitch-framing prowess is well documented, as is his rapport with pitchers: Count ex-batterymates Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross among his biggest fans. It's been a long strange trip, but the 49th player taken in the 2001 draft appears to have found himself.
2014 Rene Rivera nailed nine of 16 potential basestealers last year, hit his first big-league triple (against Zack Wheeler), knocked a personal-best seven RBI and raised his career TAv to a frosty .200.
2013 Journeyman catcher Rene Rivera owns a career 514 OPS in the big leagues, 710 OPS at Triple-A, and the distinction of having been taken seven picks ahead of J.J. Hardy in the 2001 draft.
2012 In Rene Rivera, the Twins found a catcher with even less offensive ability than Drew Butera, though he did at least throw out a team-high 40 percent of would-be base thieves.
2007 On a per-at-bat basis, Rivera had one of the worst-hitting seasons in the American League last year--right up there with Edgardo Alfonso, Kevin Witt, and Antonio Perez. Some credit should go to the Mariners` pizza-delivery development program, which saw Rivera as a full-time backup despite having fewer than 70 career plate appearances at Triple-A. Note to Bill Bavasi: You don`t get your players in 30 minutes or less. You get them when they`re ready.
2005 A collapse of a season, in which Rivera wore down and didn't hit at all. Figure him as a backstop with an armócheck out those defensive numbers. Mike Matheny became a rich man, so anything's possible.
2004 Rivera, a second-round pick in 2001 out of high school in Puerto Rico, just looks like a catcher. He's not one of these guys who's 6'5" and backstopping in the low minors. He's a good defensive catcher who showed pretty good development with the bat. Rivera's young enough to have a shot at a solid career some prospect lists for the 2005 season.
