2015 This ideal fourth outfielder should start very few games, and here's why. Imagine the seventh-inning stretch and Lough strolling onto the field with a microphone, belting this classic baseball tune: "Put me into the ballgame, put me in for my glove, replace the slugger who can't throw well, I don't care if I ever will bat, for it's U-Z-R that's important, in one-run late-inning games, for it's one, two, three outfield spots at the Lough ballgame!"
2014 With Jeff Francoeur doing Jeff Francoeur things, and prized prospect Wil Myers doing Wil Myers things for Tampa instead, the Royals had to turn to Plan C for right field. With his below-average hit tool and lack of power, Lough profiles more as a fourth outfielder. He doesn’t display a platoon split. His lack of power won’t play as a regular in the corner, and while he wasn’t the root cause of his team’s offensive struggles, he was a symptom of a poor plan on offense. The Orioles, who added Lough in the Danny Valencia trade, won't miss a beat with him on defense, so there is value here. Just not on an everyday basis.
2013 Lough’s slash numbers took a step back as his walk rate tumbled and fewer line drives found the gaps in Triple-A outfields. His plus talent is speed, which is useful in center but wasted in his inability or unwillingness to accept a free pass. He continues to profile as a fourth outfielder, but has slipped in the organizational depth chart. He could be the next Mitch Maier, but more than likely he's the next Kit Pellow.
2011 Lough failed to build on his 2009 breakout season, shifting the focus from all of the things he can do to all of the abilities he lacks. He's a contact hitter with gap power and above-average speed, but does nothing at an impact level. He probably won't hit like an everyday corner outfielder, and he's the kind of center fielder who can handle the position in a pinch but falls short in a full-time gig. Lough could carve out a nice career as a fourth outfielder and occasional starter, but—strange as it sounds to say—he might not be good enough for the Royals teams of the future.
2010 Lough is a free swinger with good speed that still hasn’t been fully utilized on the basepaths. His high average last year covered up a low walk rate that will need to improve as he moves up. Though a gamer, if Lough can't turn up his offensive game, he could fall into permanent fourth-outfielderdom, a tweener whose glove shuts him out of center and whose bat can't carry a corner. Slated to begin the season at Triple-A, he should be on the short list for a big-league callup; we'll see whether Omaha or Kansas City has the last Lough.

2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is there an upside to David Lough in Baltimore?
(OB1 from NYC)
You bet there is! If MLB changes their rules to allow only one person to use steroids and that one person is David Lough, then man, you're gonna see some stuff! Otherwise, maybe he can replicate his stats from last season (.311 OBP, .413 SLG). If he can do that without any rule changes he's a useful player. (Matthew Kory)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any sleepers in the OF? That's area that seems thin this season
(Mike from over there)
Depends on how deep your league is. In really deep leagues, David Lough in the AL and Andrew Lambo in the NL are examples of deep, deep sleepers I'd target. (Mike Gianella)
