2014 Although general managers are known to look for competent bullpen arms everywhere from the independent leagues to the waiver wire to their grandparentsí couch cushions, it was still a bit surprising when the Cubs signed a 36-year-old former NPB closer rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery. A former member of the Korean international team, Lim made his minor-league debut last June and promptly began carving up hitters with his low-90s fastball, slider and splitter, all delivered from a Nomo-esque windup and a sidearm slot. Lim had trouble finding the plate during a brief September call-up, but his stuff looks like it can miss bats and make righty hitters uncomfortable. He was non-tendered but deserves a long look this spring to be some team's solid situational righty.
2013 Lim is a signing for the future, if a rather odd one. At 36, he's old for a relief pitcher, period, much less one who's never played in the United States. But Lim is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, and thus isn't even expected to pitch in the majors until 2014. The Cubs are hedging their bets, though, giving Lim a minor-league deal with no guaranteed roster spot but heavily laden with incentives. Lim hails from Korea, but has been pitching in Japan since 2008. This wasn't his first chance to pitch in the U.S.: The Samsung Lions posted him back in 2002, but the Korean team decided the winning bid of $650,000 was too low to let Lim go.
