BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 After an impressive 13-start rookie season in 2014, Wada returned to the Cubs on a one-year, $4 million deal. He looked like the top candidate to take the fifth spot in the rotation out of spring training, but injuries pushed his season debut back to May 20th. He only made seven starts before succumbing to shoulder inflammation in his throwing arm. After another month on the DL, Wada spent the next two months starting games in Triple-A before returning to the majors as a September call-up. Wada signed quickly in the offseason, opting to return to Japan rather than battle once again for a roster spot in the majors. He could conceivably make a return to North America after proving his health in Japan, but he's 35 and few make the trip twice.
2015 Finally healthy, Tsuyoshi Wada got his first taste of the bigs and became the no. 3/4 starter the Orioles originally signed him to be three winters ago.
2014 Well that didn't work. Wada spent all of 2013 at Triple-A after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2012. The lefty's two-year, $8 million contract thus expired without him throwing a single pitch in the major leagues. Baltimore, you'll be surprised to hear, declined his $5 million option just after the season ended. It is a requirement that Baseball Prospectus comments about Wada use the phrase "crafty lefty," so there you go.
2013 The O’s surely didn’t expect a Chen-like 4.02 ERA out of their "other" Japanese pitcher when they signed Wada last offseason, but they certainly expected more than two minor-league innings. Injuries abruptly ended Wada’s 2012 campaign, and he underwent Tommy John surgery in May; he should return early this season. The Japanese-born lefty is definitely of the crafty variety, working with an unexceptional fastball in the 85-88 mph range. Instead, he relies on plus command and deception to attack hitters. In an ideal world one would call Wada a fifth starter, but he may be more suited to a swingman role. One scout compared him to Hisanori Takahashi in this regard.
2012 The Orioles showed quite an interest in Asian imports this winter, ultimately resulting in the signing of Tsuyoshi Wada in the hope that he can give the back end of their rotation some stability after starters came and went like women from Barney Stinson's bachelor pad in 2011. Fitting the crafty lefty mold, Wada's fastball sits at an unremarkable 85-88 mph, but his command is a legitimate plus tool that should help him get by as a fifth starter or, at the very least, a decent swingman.

2014-09-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you have any thoughts on Kyle Hendricks and Tsuyoshi Wada? Scouts and prognosticators seem to mostly tab them as back-end-of-the-rotation pitchers, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Based off what you've seen from them this year, do you think the Cubs are considering them as rotation options in the mid-to-long term?
(tomshipley75 from Chicago)
They're both cheap, so I don't see why not. It isn't like they have a bevy of options as the roster is currently constructed. I'm sure they'll sign one, if not two pitchers this offseason. I like Hendricks more, but it's still a back end profile. (Jordan Gorosh)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)There are a couple of new Non-Darvish Japanese pitchers this year: Wei-yin Chin, Tsuyoshi Wada, and Hisashi Iwakuma. Will any of them have decent seasons in America?
(Paul from DC)
I like Iwakuma's chances more than Chin. Unfortunately, the Mariners gave Millwood a rotation spot over Iwakuma for now but that presents a bit of a draft day bargain. (Jason Collette)
