2016 Whooooooo's ready to scout the stat line? This Cuban import has little prospect pedigree, but has shown remarkable control of the plate during his two years in the Cleveland organization. Last season, he had the second-highest walk rate in the Eastern League (13.8 percent), which outpaced his strikeout rate (11.1 percent) and gives the impression of a guy who could reach base even at the highest level. He'll need that OBP, as his plate coverage comes from a short swing that robs him of game power.

He has another calling card that the stat line doesn't show: He's one of the best defensive third basemen in the minor leagues. Diaz didn't wow in a cup of coffee with Columbus at the end of the season, but this Eastern League All-Star has enough going for him that a solid showing at the start of 2016 could tip him ahead of Giovanny Urshela.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2017-03-23 20:00:00 (link to chat)What's up with Yandy Diaz? Prospect reports all have him as an outstanding defender -- but spring training reports make it seem he's never seen a glove before. What's going on? And am I wrong to feel giddy about him? (I'm in a 12-team AL-only Scoresheet league that factors in defense and OBP.)
(touchstoneQu from Minneapolis)
It looks like BP had him at 6.7 FRAA last season in Triple-A, so he's above average on D for sure. He has hit everywhere, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Indians give him a shot this year. They could pretty easily move Jose Ramirez to 2nd base while Kipnis is hurt and that would open a spot for Diaz. (Mark Barry)
2016-11-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Bradley Zimmer was listed by Chris Crawford as one of the 10 biggest prospect fallers in 2016. He essentially lamented his inability to hit lefties, and his increased strikeout rate. The Tribe isn't short on young outfielders. Do you still think Zimmer has a better shot as a major league regular than Naquin, Yandy Diaz, Mike Papi and Greg Allen or do any of those guys now excite you more?
(Truganini from CO)
Naquin has done it in the majors, and that means a lot for a guy who has always had the tools but was never putting it together at the same time in the minors. I might take Naquin, but that would be a tough call and require some thought.

Zimmer's still well ahead of the other three. (Jarrett Seidler)
