2017-03-29 14:00:00 (link to chat) | In a league that does not value strikeouts, who are the best bets to close most of the season in Miami, Arizona and Milwaukee? (Chopper from Indy) | I'm most confident here in Milwaukee, because I actually believe in the strides Neftali Feliz has made (or at least has been reported to have made) in his velocity. I have some shares of AJ Ramos so it pains me to admit that it's likely Kyle Barraclough overcomes him if he even has half of his last year's season, but I think they split the share of saves pretty evenly.
I completely hate the bullpen situation in Arizona and would not want any part of it, so I'll make a bold prediction here. I think Fernando Rodney doesn't really latch on in any real way and that Jake Barrett (while the natural choice to take over as closer) is passed over in favor of Archie Bradley, who becomes a bullpen ace and a top 5 NL closer. 2017-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Jeff! Firstly, SWFC, currently still in 6th after last weeks loss - confidence levels of staying there for rest of the season?
And back on baseball, thoughts on whether Jared Miller gets a chance in the Arizona 'pen later this year? Any chance he picks up saves if (when) Rodney implodes? (AJ from Canada) | Ask me again in five hours.
I think we've kind of ignored how literally half there best XI have missed significant time (Lees, Lee, Hooper, now Hutch, Fessi, Wallace), and it sure looks like it is going to come down to the last day against Fulham. A comfortable 2-0 home to Reading today will calm my nerves.
I am the last guy to ask about closers-in-waiting, but I wouldn't be shocked if AZ just goes with Rodney if they aren't really in it. I guess Jake Barrett might be the guy after if the shoulder is okay? (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2016-08-01 16:00:00 (link to chat) | I hate closers. Just lost Davis in a 16 team league. Have Edwin Diaz helping me with ratios but no saves yet. Took a flyer before deadline and picked up both Ryan Dull & Edubray Ramos but seems neither their respective clubs made deals. Should I move on from these 2 & look to add Hudson or Axford. Need a closer for the home stretch for saves. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks (Jerry from Earth) | Jake Barrett and not Hudson is going to close in Arizona and John Axford isn't any closer to the job. Hang on to Edwin Diaz and hope that Steve Cishek blows another save or two this week. (Mike Gianella) |
2016-08-01 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Playing for 2017 in old school 4x4 NL only 24/270 league. What are the chances Jake Barrett holds the closer job next year? And who do you figure closes for the Braves? (brucegilsen from Washington, DC) | 75 percent chance. In 2017? Probably still Vizcaino, since I don't see him getting through waivers to get traded on a waiver deal. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-02-16 11:00:00 (link to chat) | You mentioned Arizona with regards to a Navarro trade. Would an unproven relief prospect like Kaleb Fleck, Jimmie Sherfy, Jake Barrett, or Enrique Burgos be a fair return? (JobaTheHut from Limbo) | Possibly, yeah. (R.J. Anderson) |
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Prospect Closer talk. Arodys Vizcaino. He gonna be that guy in the next year or two?? How bout Jake Barrett with AZ?? And your odds on Foltynewicz being a starter at the end of the day. (Kyra Sedgwick from Bacon) | Ahh clever name.
Arodys is coming, his fate is out of his hands though. The Cubs bullpen has suddenly gotten a few different options in there. Barrett has upside, I think Reed holds on and he's young enough to be there awhile but I think Barrett might be forcing some hands in AZ.
As for Folty, that's a really good question for Craig Goldstein. I think he's got a lot of reliever tendencies but I still leave room for development. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat) | NL dynasty leagues.... Name 1 catcher and future closer who will start in minors with big upside
(DB from Pittsburgh) | Jorge Alfaro and Jake Barrett. (Bret Sayre) |
2013-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Jake Barrett (recently promoted to Double-A and doing well as the closer there) have a chance to close for the Diamondbacks in the future? (bkobs from Mass) | I'm lukewarm on the grooming a closer in the minors thing. Like it or not there is a psychological aspect to the modern closer's role, so it's hard to assess a guy's makeup until you see him in the big leagues. So, clearly he has a path as a reliever and if he continues to shut teams down in AA ... then he'll be a legit prospect in my mind. Then we can talk about him closing later down the road.
