DateQuestionAnswer
2009-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)I thought you'd answer "Yankees backup C" :)
(Wade from TX)
That would have been a fun answer, but although I tend to bitch about carrying an automatic out on the bench, I'm not sure how high our expectations should really be. As I wrote in today's You Could Look It Up, I'm looking for something better than Kevin Cash/Corky Miller, but much more than that probably isn't too realistic... John Flaherty hit .259/.291/.461 from 2003-2004, which is basically Miguel Olivo, obviously not great, but also not horrible given the alternatives. He had some big hits, too... (Steven Goldman)
2009-05-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Yankees trade for a catcher? They don't just need a backup now, you figure they'll need one for, oh 130 games in 2 years or so. This is, in my opinion, the biggest non-Jeter related question over the next few years.
(King of Spain from Pizza Pizza)
Love that song... It was an issue last year and the year before and the year before that. Forever, basically. The Yankees got away with a lot because Posada was super-durable for a catcher, and they made the mistake of pretending that he would go on like that forever. They could use a viable backup NOW, because even when Posada comes off the DL, he could get hurt again, and then it's right back to Cervelli, Molina, and (choke) Kevin Cash. As nice a defender as Molina is, the Yankees even knew that they'd have to give him 200 at-bats this year at minimum because Jorge wasn't going to play 145 games, and yet they did nothing. There are some smart people at work in the Yankees front office, but I feel like they were caught sleeping this offseason when it came to this very obvious piece of insurance. (Steven Goldman)
2008-08-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What should the Red Sox do with Varitek going forward? I am so tired of hearing people talk about how valuable he is to the pitching staff and how he calls a great game. I don't think if they let him go it would be a bad move, he is currently below replacement level.
(Bill Sussman from CT)
Please don't re-sign him, please don't re-sign him, please don't re-sign him, please don't re-sign him, please don't re-sign him, please don't re-sign him, please don't re-sign him, please don't re-sign him.

They need to find a legitimate replacement first, and Kevin Cash is not a legitimate replacement. You can make the argument that with their other bats, they can afford to have a lousy hitting catcher back there, but that only goes so far before you find yourself making bets with friends about which quadrant of the strike zone Varitek is going to miss a pitch by three miles in every time he comes to the plate. And yes, I do that often, and I'm pretty good at it from having plenty of practice, which is sad at a level I can't explain. (Marc Normandin)
