2009-03-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were the Mets, would you kick Ray Durham's tires, hoping he had enough left to run over Luis Castillo? At the least they could form a once-famous platoon....
(Yatchisin from Santa Barbara)
If I were the Mets, I would kick Eddie Collins' tires hoping he had enough left to run over Luis Castillo. I would kick Ron Hunt's tires. I would kick the man on the street. Better yet, I never, never, never would have offered that contract. That's a first-guess too. (Steven Goldman)
2009-03-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Saw a suggestion somewhere that the Yankees might simply slide Cano across the diamond to third and then pick up a middle infielder, which seems like an easier option than finding a quality 3B. What do you think?
(Rob from Brighton)
The market does seem to contain more free talent (Esteban German) or free agents (Ray Durham, Mark Grudzielanek) among second basemen than third basemen, so if Cano could pull off the switch it might be worthwhile. That said, Cano's got enough to worry about with resuscitating his bat, so I'd rather see the Yanks try something else; I like Grudz or the Dodgers' Mark Loretta -- rendered redundant by the Orlando Hudson signing and Blake DeWitt's attempt to become a utilityman for the short term -- as backups who would have value even if A-Rod returns. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat)Was the Rickie Weeks/Ray Durham platoon a good idea? Do you think they'll do the same in 2009? Now that Cameron is in the fold, the option to move Rickie to CF is gone.
(Rob from Alaska)
OK, I know, it's a bit of a run on Brewers questions, but I'll deal with this one now too... yes, it was, but I've never been sold on Weeks' ability to stick at second. Picking up Cameron's option makes sense if you can deal him (for young, under-control pitching, perhaps), but I think the charade of calling Weeks a second baseman needs to come to an end if the Brewers really want to turn the corner. 2008-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Will. Today's UTK made me wonder: When a player with a real injury history changes teams, is it common for the new team's trainer to discuss the player with the previous trainer? Is that even allowed?
(Amos from New York)
Good question and the answer is yes, they normally do. It's almost a "professional courtesy" thing. The problem is that no matter how hard you try, you can't just mind-meld the info and there's something lost. Add in differing philosophies, background, and personality and there's always going to be a difference. The biggest is just a matter of trust. Trainers LIVE with these players. I can remember Barney Nugent, the former trainer of the Giants, telling me about spending more time with Ray Durham than he did with his kids. When Durham healed up, Nugent told him "We've got to break up."

Yes, I'm a big fan of Athletic Trainers, especially great guys like Nugent. (Will Carroll)
