2002 Holtz was the top left-hander in the Angels' pen until the middle of May, when he hit the DL with an inflamed throwing elbow. Holtz and his Frisbee curve were back at the end of the month just in time to experience this extreme usage pattern: in his final 49 appearances, he pitched a total of 25 2/3 innings.Signed by Oakland to two-year contract.
2001 Mike Holtz should be a great left-handed specialist. Because he gets hung out to dry against right-handed hitters too often, his overall numbers look pretty bad. It's a shame, because used as an anti-lefty device, he's devastating.
2000 Juan Alvarez has his job now, so Holtz will have to move elsewhere. He still has the sweeping curve that made him so nasty in 1996 and 1997, and will be back in the major leagues soon enough. His biggest problem is that he needs work to keep the curve sharp, but he can’t face right-handed hitters, who treat him like music critics treat a Celine Dion record.
1999 The funny thing about his midseason demotion was that it came after he got his act together. He was brutal through June, but pitched well in July; a couple of bad days against the Yankees and Red Sox got him sent down for a month. Holtz didn't seem to have the same fastball he did in 1997, which left him with just the big-breaking curveball. It's a nice pitch, but it's just one pitch. His strong September makes me think he's OK.
1998 Started the year like a house on fire, faded badly in September. Holtz is a small left-hander with a big breaking ball, good command and a motion that is tough on lefties. Despite the big platoon split he showed this year, I think he can be more than just a spot left-hander. His size (small) makes endurance a question mark, and he probably needs an out pitch for right-handers.
1997 More bullpen depth. A quality reliever right now, and likely to get better. Holtz throws a heavy ball and knows how to pitch. Outside of this organization, an excellent closer prospect, despite the suspect control.
