DateQuestionAnswer
2017-10-12 20:00:00 (link to chat)How would you sort out the A's rotation next season? Sean Manaea and Kendall Graveman are the only two locks. You've got Frankie Montas, Raul Alcantara, and Jesse Hahn, who are all out of options. The 4A pitchers - Daniel Gossett, Paul Blackburn, and then Andrew Triggs and Daniel Mengden who showed promise in short stints. And Jharel Cotton who looks great when he isn't giving up homers by the truckload.
(Ken from Palo Alto)
I think Triggs / Blackburn / Mengden have at least earned a shot at it if they're healthy when the season starts. Montas has to be a reliever at this point, no? I might see how Cotton looks in relief also. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospects this year have an 80 grade tool?
(CKnecht88 from Ohio)
This is my favorite question so far. Look, I'm not a scout. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the men and women who can do it. I think as far as 80-grade goes, that's reserved for top of the scale #OffTheCharts tools like Billy Hamilton's speed, Joey Gallo's power, Miguel Cabrera's hit tool (and maybe Mookie Betts someday)...I think of the current crop of prospects, Alex Reyes & Michael Kopech have 80-grade fastballs. There are a few relievers with the velocity to put an 80 on their fastballs too. If you're looking for a fun one, I think Jharel Cotton's changeup is a potential one to get there. I have no idea how you grade a screwball but Brent Honeywell for me there. (George Bissell)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Pitching sleepers/breakouts for this year? If possible, geared to points leagues?
(chrispetersen15 from IA)
I'll give you a few deeper late-round mixed options: Garrett Richards, Robert Gsellman, Jharel Cotton and Zach Davies.
As far as "breakouts" go that's a broad term. Starters that I like better than the consensus: Julio Urias, Marcus Stroman, Jon Gray, James Paxton (is so obvious it's painful), and Frankie Liriano. I'm probably forgetting someone...Oh. Draft Rich Hill... (George Bissell)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who's your hitting and pitching deep sleepers for 2017 for deeper leagues - say 16 team or so - and why?
(Anthony from Lunch)
Whats for lunch? Seriously, I'm starving. Um...I'll give you one each. Robert Gsellman & Jharel Cotton on the pitching side. I keep coming back to Steve Pearce as a guy who is a lock to outperform where he's getting drafted. Same goes for Yulieski Gurriel & Asdrubal Cabrera. (George Bissell)
2016-12-05 20:00:00 (link to chat)Any deep pitching sleepers for 2017?
(Ben from Texas)
Robert Gsellman and Jharel Cotton. (George Bissell)
2016-12-05 20:00:00 (link to chat)Fearless prediction: Jharel Cotton is a top ___ SP in 2017. (hint the right answer is higher than 40, less than 30).
(Punchoutpappy from First in Flight)
70 (George Bissell)
2016-09-07 19:00:00 (link to chat)Looking ahead to 2017, the A's appear to have 3/5 of their rotation, assuming health, locked in for before the trading deadline: Sonny Gray, Sean Manaea, and Kendall Graveman. Out of Jesse Hahn, Chris Bassitt, Henderson Alvarez, Daniel Mengden, Jharel Cotton, Raul Alcantara, Dillon Overton, and Frankie Montas, who can round out the rotation, who is more of a 4A player, and who just won't every be healthy enough again (looking at you, Jesse Hahn and Henderson Alvarez!)?
(Greg from San Francisco)
I'm mostly going to have to go off colleagues' reports, because I don't get any Oakland affiliates out here on the east coast. Seems to me like Mengden, Overton, and Alcantara have the best shots to be MLB starters, whereas Montas and Cotton might be better prospects but also probably profile best in relief. That may be completely wrong, though.

Hard not to feel for Henderson Alvarez given how his last couple years have went. (Jarrett Seidler)
2016-02-03 20:00:00 (link to chat)your personal favorite prospects outside of the top 101?
(JoeRandom from San Jose)
I'm terrible at this off the top of my head. Demi Orimoloye, Harrison Bader, and Jharel Cotton are some personal favorites that are probably well off the 101. (Greg Wellemeyer)
