BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 The Diamondbacks' Opening Day setup guy added giddy-up to his fastball but lost sink, and that made all the difference: pitches got left up, Marshall got sent down. All that's of secondary concern now, after a line drive fractured his skull while he was pitching for Reno in August. Marshall walked off the field steadily, seemingly fine, but later that night doctors found bleeding in his brain and performed an emergency, life-saving surgery. He'll wear the funny hat this year, hopefully another step toward a future in which all pitchers are at least partially protected by padded headwear. "I was minutes away from not making it," Marshall told the AP. "And if the worst thing that happens from all this is I have to wear a funny-looking hat to continue my career, I'll take it."
2015 Marshall made his major-league debut in 2014 and stuck around after a strong showing. The right-hander drops down low before slinging the ball toward the plate with a short arm action that has some violence to it. He's a three-pitch reliever with a mid-90s fastball and a pair of secondary offerings that each register eight to 10 miles slower, including a top-shelf slider. Though his changeup is effective against lefties, he has a pronounced split. This is likely because he cuts himself off from the inner half against southpaws and works almost everything away. The ability to work glove-side is within his repertoire, as Marshall routinely goes away from righties with the heater. The ingredients for a late-inning reliever are all there. He just needs some more work in the kitchen.
2014 Once thought to be a speedy promotion to the majors, Evan Marshall just keeps inching. After a full season in Triple-A, his mid-90s fastball should get a chance this year to show major-league hitters how wild it has gotten.
2013 Evan Marshall was on the fast track to the majors and tearing through Mobile, but he hit a speed bump in August that threw him from the closer role in favor of De La Rosa.
