BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Bobby hit a Wahl just seven games into his major-league career, acquainting himself with the disabled list in May and undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in August. If he makes it back at full strength, he can be an asset in the bullpen (check that velocity and those strikeout rates), but without a ton of projection left (check that age), he's not a good bet to do more than help out in middle relief (check those walk rates). If he can get himself on TV often enough, the full, lustrous beard he wore last year should help him snag an endorsement deal with Wahl Grooming ("Real Grooming for Real Guys"). If you're his agent, give us a call; we've got a million brilliant ideas where that one came from.
2017 Bobby Wahl’s signature triple-digit velocity got him to Triple-A, but some late-season control issues cast a shadow over his future as a major-league reliever.
2016 A flamed-out starter, Bobby Wahl hasn't lost any heat on his fastball, which sits 94-97 mph in relief. Add in his above-average slider and average change, and he could be a late-innings option.
2015 Wahl dealt with an oblique injury that cost him a month during the spring, and after a quartet of ineffective starts upon his return the right-hander was sent to the bullpen. It turns out that a little relief was just what the doctor ordered. His ERA shrunk from 7.01 as a starting pitcher to 2.93 as a reliever and his strikeout rate ballooned from 16 percent to an eye-opening 35. The transition to relief takes the pressure off Wahl to develop a third pitch, allowing his fastball-curveball combination to shine as he parlays a powerful delivery into high-leverage gold. With his future role now defined, Wahl could move quickly and be on the fast track to the bigs.
2014 Wahl entered the college season with first-round aspirations, but he battled blisters that hampered his command. There were questions about his signability when the right-hander slipped to the fifth round of the draft, but the A's gave him a $500,000 deal that was well above slot and convinced Ole Miss's Friday-night starter to turn pro. Wahl has a powerful delivery that involves a King Felix-like twist as he charges toward the plate and a mid-90s fastball and two-plane breaker that will play at the highest level. He could progress quickly if he refines his command, though (you've heard this before) development of the changeup will determine his ultimate role—without that reliable third pitch, he'll likely hit a developmental wall [Ed.: See? Professionals] and wind up in the bullpen.

2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)Is Bobby Wahl going to stay in the bullpen longterm? Or do you think the A's organization brings him into Spring Training as a starter next year?
(Steve from Oakland)
He sure looked like a reliever to me. Came out there to rage against the machine (personal favorite) and was rearing back and throwing as hard as he could. 95-97 with life. Plenty of effort in the delivery. I think he succeeds in the pen, and the arm could be impact, especially with the big time breaking ball. Just let him focus on getting three outs-- could be really good at it. (Jordan Gorosh)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Outside the top 10 draftees, has anyone other than JPCrawford improved his stock by a large margin?
(tr from Here )
Since the draft? Absolutely. Hunter Harvey, Bobby Wahl and Devin Williams are a few guys whose prospect stock look significantly better than their draft slot. (Bret Sayre)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)I was surprised to see Bobby Wahl rank so high for the A's. Is that more of a function of Wahl's talent and ceiling, or the A's being nearly bereft of prospects after Addison Russell?
(John from San Francisco)
Well, he likely wouldn't be so high in most other orgs, but it's also a function of his talent and ceiling. He's a real arm and a guy to closely track in dynasty drafts beyond the first 20 picks or so. (Bret Sayre)

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC

Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Bobby Wahl threw 411 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2017 and 2022, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2022, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (94mph) and Slider (84mph), also mixing in a Curve (79mph).
