BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Nothing about Triggs' stuff ever made anyone think he had a serious shot at major-league success, which is why his best draft position was the 19th round. All he has done as a professional, though, is get outs: A 2.09 minor-league ERA with a strikeout per inning ought to shout even if your sidearm, 89-mph sinker only mutters. After watching him pitch surprisingly well in four short-leash August 2016 starts (2.91 ERA while never seeing the seventh inning), the A's installed Triggs in their 2017 rotation. He responded with perfectly adequate results despite missing few bats and not converting his heavy sinker into actual grounders. He then supplemented his response with an injury, a June hip strain for which he wound up having season-ending surgery in July. "Assuming health" is a fearsome phrase for Triggs, whose 2016 season ended in early September after a back strain, but, assuming health, he should again compete for the fourth or fifth rotation spot this year.
2017 Andrew Triggs’ extreme sidearm delivery disguised sub par offerings, but improved command and a successful migration to the rotation helped convert his career trajectory from journeyman reliever to potential back-end starter.
2016 Andrew Triggs is a reliever who doesn't really have the sort of profile that plays up in relief, with a little sink and a little deception and not much stuff at all.

2017-10-12 20:00:00 (link to chat)How would you sort out the A's rotation next season? Sean Manaea and Kendall Graveman are the only two locks. You've got Frankie Montas, Raul Alcantara, and Jesse Hahn, who are all out of options. The 4A pitchers - Daniel Gossett, Paul Blackburn, and then Andrew Triggs and Daniel Mengden who showed promise in short stints. And Jharel Cotton who looks great when he isn't giving up homers by the truckload.
(Ken from Palo Alto)
I think Triggs / Blackburn / Mengden have at least earned a shot at it if they're healthy when the season starts. Montas has to be a reliever at this point, no? I might see how Cotton looks in relief also. (Nick Schaefer)
2017-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Andrew Triggs experiment has failed. When do the A's give Daniel Gossett a chance?
(Dave from San Francisco)
Well, define "failed." I mean, the guy had only two starts in which he allowed more than 2 runs through mid-May. He's hurt. Unless his hip can't be fixed--always a possibility with hips--he should be back. Gossett, who somehow hasn't been in the BP Annual since 2015 despite being only 24, will probably get a call at some point if he keeps pitching this well in Nashville, though I'd guess Paul Blackburn may be in Oakland first. (Rob Mains)
2017-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are we seeing the breakout of Mike Foltynewicz?
(Rob Deer from Milwaukee)
Considering that he owns a 4.38 DRA (descriptive) and a 102 cFIP (predictive & also below the league-average mark of 100), I would say no. The strikeout rate is still around 8.0 per-nine. I'm just not interested. I'll throw darts at the Andrew Triggs of the world before I bet on someone like Folty. (George Bissell)
2017-01-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Andrew Triggs will get the 5th spot in Oakland's rotation and if so how much upside do you see him having ?
(Craig from Ventura, CA)
I'm interested to see how this plays out too. Roster Resource has him penciled in at #4 right now. He hasn't really been a starter at any point in his entire career, but was kinda/sorta decent last year in spurts. I don't know if there's huge upside, but maybe high 3/low 4 ERA with just under 9 k's per nine? (Mark Barry)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Since your in Wilimington a lot, what do you think of Tyler Sample and Andrew Triggs? Both pretty tall dudes
(BobcatBaseball from Athens, OH)
Tyler Sample was touching 96 with a plus curveball at 84 the other night. It is a real shame he just cannot repeat his delivery and has bottom-of-the-scale command. (Zach Mortimer)
