2019  Due to publishing agreements, the 2019 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2019 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2018 Would-be LOOGY Adam Liberatore was unable to liberate himself from injury in 2017, as groin and forearm issues limited him to just four spring appearances before an eventual September rehab shutdown.
2017 In 2014, Childish Gambino dropped a freestyle on HOT97 with Rosenberg that accomplished something heretofore thought impossible: positive YouTube comments. It was four minutes of straight fire, kicked off with the refrain "I've been grindin' my whole life." Liberatore knows a little something about grinding—as do most 28-year-old rookies. A 21st-round pick by the Rays from Tennessee Technological University in 2010, Liberatore wasn't handed anything on the diamond, including a check. But as Gambino croons, "they gave the wrong [pitchers] money." Liberatore didn't post an ERA over 3.74 in his minor league career, yet he didn't earn many chances due to his low-90s fastball, even as a lefty. Finally afforded an opportunity to get that paper in 2016, he reeled off a string as epic as the aforementioned freestyle, recording a 42-game, 33-inning stretch from April to July where he allowed two earned runs and struck out 38 against only 10 walks. Liberatore struggled down the stretch and was ultimately surpassed by Grant Dayton as the go-to lefty―likely due to an elbow that needed arthroscopic surgery after the season. As a result, he'll enter Spring Training just trying to make the team. That's nothing new for Liberatore, of course. He's been grindin' his whole life.
2016 Not content to rely on J.P. Howell and Joel Peralta alone, Andrew Friedman also picked up Liberatore to round out a bullpen replete with former Rays, but the lefty never made it to the majors in Tampa. His debut with the Dodgers was fine, okay, nondescript, average, middle of the road, vanilla. Still, the large lefty will need to miss a few more bats if he wants to earn his name à la Simon Bolivar, Emperor Alexander II and Pedro I of Brazil. Now those were some Liberatores who knew how to provide relief.
2015 A classic three-year Triple-A project, Liberatore has gone from just a big body to a big-league-ready fireman. He beat out Durham's entire starting rotation for the team's Most Valuable Pitcher Award, was named the Rays' minor-league Reliever of the Year and was by most statistical measures the best reliever in the International League. Liberatore's increasingly heavy, 93 mph fastball was responsible for most of his success, along with a workable slider, a show-me changeup and (more importantly) maturity that allowed him to assume Durham's closer role late in the season. The 2010 21st-rounder should make his big-league debut this year; his sub-.500 OPS allowed to lefties over three Triple-A seasons recommends him for situational use, but he handles righties, too.
2013 Adam Liberatore, a 2010 21st-rounder out of Tennessee Tech, has moved quietly but steadily up the system and, in a late-season stint at Triple-A, put up his best numbers yet.

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC

Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Adam Liberatore threw 1,448 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2015 and 2018, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2018, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (91mph) and Change (83mph), also mixing in a Slider (83mph).
