YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 Every team needs a defense-minded middle-infield backup like Gonzalez, except perhaps the team that currently has him. After starting his professional career as a jack of all trades on defense, he has built himself into a plus defensive shortstop and developed an average hit tool, earning raves for his makeup. After hitting well at Akron, he struggled at the plate after being called up to replace Francisco Lindor at Columbus, but got back on track thanks to a great 11-game run during the International League playoffs (.326/.340/.609), the first time he had shown power. On any other team he could be pegged as a future regular at best, and a utility option at worst, but in Cleveland he's just another middle infielder in the shadow of Lindor.
2015 The Indians have moved the tall, lanky Gonzalez from position to position in his career, but it looks like he's finally found a home at shortstop. He has a smooth glove, good range, fine instincts and a strong left-side arm. Gonzalez had a solid year with the bat in 2014, but it's still a work in progress and the glove is definitely ahead developmentally. Still, if you dance like Gene Kelly and act like Grace Kelly while singing like Jim Kelly, well, we'll overlook that as long as you can hum a few bars. Which is to say that even as Gonzalez doesn't profile as an offensive contributor, guys who play short as well as he has tend to find major-league jobs.
