2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What happened to Cody Buckel? (TPX2 from Taiwan) | Whether you want to call it the yips, the thing, or just flat-out losing control because of a mental issue, Buckel has it. It's not quite Ankiel bad, where balls are just flying to the backstop, but it's a mental block that's keeping him from locking into his delivery and throwing strikes. If he comes out of it, he'll be better for the experience. If not, his career will obviously be over. Still very young and the Rangers will give him at least a couple years to figure it out. But whether he can actually come out of it is anybody's guess. (Jason Cole) |
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat) | On a scale of Jurickson Profar (1) to Josh Hamilton (10), how worried are you about Cody Buckel? (Ross from HEB) | Any time somebody's control issues progress (regress?) to the point where we're calling it "the yips," that meter goes immediately to a 6 for me. I'd say 6 right now (I'm assuming the Hamilton 10 means "very worried"). The good news is that Buckel's stuff is still there. He's kind of made himself a fastball-curveball guy for the time being, but he hit 97 in a recent start and has sat between 89-94, depending on the outing. He's all out of whack mentally and mechanically, though, and that has led to 28 walks in 9.1 innings. He absolutely needs to be in extended spring training soon, in my opinion. (Jason Cole) |
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Thoughts on the following pitchers.
Cody Buckel, Robbie Erlin, Kyle Crick and John Lamb (CraigR from DC) | Big Robbie Erlin fan - check out piece Bernie Pleskoff wrote on him http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130107&content_id=40870370&vkey=news_sd&c_id=sd . Like Buckel, Crick bears watching as he makes jump to advanced levels, while Lamb is a watch and see from a far. (Jason Collette) |
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think Cody Buckel can break camp with the big league club? (Justin from OK) | I highly doubt it. (Jason Parks) |
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Which minor league prospect do you feel has similar stuff, K%, BB%, GB% to Kris Medlen of the Braves? Clayton Blackburn? Thanks for the chat! (John from Kansas City) | Hey, John. Professor Parks and the minor-league gang probably have a better read on this stuff, but if you're looking for raw peripherals, Blackburn does seem to fit the bill. Two others to keep an eye on: Rangers RHP Cody Buckel, who found a groove late after struggling initially in Double-A, and Padres LHP Robert Erlin. (Daniel Rathman) |
