2009 Brandon Duckworth delivered four quality starts in his seven turns in the Royals rotation from late August through September. Kansas City signed him to a one-year deal following the season but wisely outrighted him to Omaha, eliminating the need to use a 40-man roster spot on their veteran rotation insurance.
2008 Duckworth is the pitching equivalent of a White Castle hamburger: cheap, consistent, and not very good. His lifetime 20-31 record and 5.37 ERA is hell of a nice career for a player who was never drafted. He was still on the roster as we went to press; apparently the Royals have an intractable case of the munchies.
2007 Like Bernero, Brandon Duckworth is a non-drafted free agent who zoomed to the majors, and he`s also marginally above replacement-level. If they both wind up pitching for the same team again, that team will probably lose 100 games, too.
2005 His impressive 2002 campaign looks more and more like a fluke. In it, he struck out 167 men in 163 innings for the Phillies. Since then, he's been around seven strikeouts per nine, and he hasn't been able to get his longball problems under control. You can't just blame Williams for this one; no manager is going to stick with a pitcher giving up a homer every four innings. Duckworth still has enough raw stuff that he could accidentally put up an ERA in the 2.00s, but at 29, it's most likely that it'll happen at the back of someone's bullpen.
2004 An Astro now, part of the Billy Wagner trade. There's little doubt that he needed to be dealt, since Bowe had clearly lost confidence dence in him, but Houston does not seem to be the ideal place for a pitcher with gopherball tendencies. The loss of Wagner, plus the Astros' improved rotation depth, may shunt Duckworth into a bullpen role.
2003 Duckworth followed up his excellent 2001 season with a lackluster 2002, yielding a ton of homers and hand-wringing. The official team line is that his mechanics were still solid, it was merely a matter of shaky confidence. While that may be part of it, it’s also likely Duckworth needs to learn how to adjust to big league hitters. Last year we predicted Duckworth would blossom into an excellent pitcher. That strikeout rate means we’re not changing our minds now. As good a bet to take a big step forward this season as anyone in this book.
2002 Hold your horses. Duckworth did have an outstanding half-season debut, with a superb ERA and eight quality starts in 11 trips to the hill. His peripherals didn’t support the ERA; Duckworth allowed just two home runs in 69 innings, an unbelievably low rate and one unlikely to be maintained. He’ll have to keep more men off the bases as the home runs inevitably come. While Duckworth still projects to be an All-Star pitcher, he has some developing to do in 2002.
2001 Brandon Duckworth seemingly came out of nowhere to be the ace of Reading’s staff, but having already thrown a lot of innings in winter ball, he wore down in August. If he manages to avoid getting hurt, he could wind up as a September call-up.
