2018 Bryce Brentz hit .279/.380/.577 against lefties in Pawtucket. If the Sox decide to go with a cheap bench he could be in the mix, but given his historical trouble with guns Brentz should be kept away from Jackie Bradley’s arm.
2017 Bryce Brentz hit .295/.343/.453 against lefties in Triple-A, appeared in 25 games in the majors and did not shoot himself. That’s a really good year by his standards.
2015 The word “literally” is overused nowadays, but Bryce Brentz is a man who literally shot himself in the foot before the 2013 season. Things have mostly gone south for him since—on the field, at least; he hasn't shot any other body parts—though he recorded a few big hits in Boston as a September call-up.
2014 If things go right for Brentz in 2014, he could grow up to be a cost-controlled Jonny Gomes, mashing lefties and putting baseballs over the wall with ease. He's a better defender than Gomes, too, as he has a serious arm that could keep him in right, but range-wise is likely a better fit for left field. However, Brentz lacks what makes Gomes tolerable against same-handed pitching: He is nearly bereft of viable plate discipline. He whiffed 25 percent of the time at Triple-A, with free passes coming in just 6 percent of plate appearances. For an offense-first corner outfielder who will be 25, that's problematic.
2013 When the Red Sox traded Josh Reddick last offseason it may have been with the knowledge that Brentz was on the way. Like Reddick, Brentz has plus bat speed and serious power for someone his size, but often he just hacks up there. Pitch recognition is one of those tough-to-teach things. Some guys pick it up, some dont. If Brentz can, then he has All-Star potential. If not, like Reddick, hell probably be starting for a different team before long.
2012 Brentz was a major power threat in college, but his first taste of the pros left him wishing the bats were still made of aluminum. His first full season in the minors changed that, though, as Brentz decimated the Sally League before continuing his rampage at High-A Salem. Brentz doesn't walk much, but he did cut his strikeout rate despite moving up two levels. In that sense, Brentz might remind Red Sox fans of Josh Reddick, as Reddick never saw a pitch he didn't like until this year. Eventually, Brentz will be challenged by pitchers and forced to change his approach, but if he can adjust to those inevitable troubles, the 2011 season has given us an idea of his power potential.
2011 Bryce Brentz put up massive numbers in college, but there are concerns that the 21-year-old doesn't have the body to hit for power professionally and needs aluminum to thrive.
