2011 Westmoreland did not appear in a game last season thanks to a vascular abnormality that required brain surgery. What this means for his career is unclear at this stage—doctors were not even sure if Westmoreland would be able to walk or talk after the surgery—but prior to the procedure he was a five-tool player who already gleamed with polish despite his youth. A smart and quick baserunner, Westmoreland boasted a powerful swing with projection for more pop and advanced strike-zone recognition that belied his lack of pro experience. On raw ability alone, Westmoreland was the finest player Boston's farm system had to offer, but no one knows what he will now become, or if he will even be able to play again.
2010 The best raw talent in the organization, five-tool high school stud Westmoreland dropped to the fifth round of the 2008 draft due to signability concerns, then underwent minor shoulder surgery that November (which could have had something to do with the 19-strikeout perfect game he threw in his final high school start). After rehabbing for the first half of 2009, Westmoreland finally made his pro debut in the short-season New York-Penn League. He initially lived up to his billing, displaying power and patience as a designated hitter and stealing 19 bases in 60 games without being caught, but his season ended early due to a broken left collarbone suffered in a collision with an outfield wall. He’ll start in the Sally League this year and could move quickly, though how his arm has recovered from the shoulder surgery remains a mystery.

2012-04-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Im wondering after all the "overhyped" red sox prospects am i foolish to get excited by will middlebrooks, xander bogaerts and brandon jacobs? Thoughts??
(jr from mass)
Who are these "overhyped" prospects of which you speak? A quick glance at Kevin's Top 11s shows that the 2007 list had Ellsbury, Pedroia, Bard, and Buchholz, 2008 had Ellsbury, Reddick, Masterson (and Middlebrooks), etc. I suppose Lars Anderson could qualify as a bust, but he's still only 24. What happened with Ryan Westmoreland couldn't have been predicted, so I'd be uncomfortable calling him overhyped. They dealt Rizzo and Kelly to San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez, and those guys are still playing well. If I'm a Red Sox fan, I'm happy with the job they've done in developing players for their own roster as well as leveraging extra talent to acquire other pieces. (Bradley Ankrom)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any recent news on the continuing recovery of Ryan Westmoreland?
(Paul from DC)
Still no timetable for a return to play. That said, doctors are confident that he'll live a normal life from here on out, so that's good. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Ryan Westmoreland becoming a relevant major leaguer still conceivable at all?
(Andrew from Chicago)
I feel bad saying no, but I'm sure rooting for him. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Happy New Year KG! Whats the outlook for injured prospects Jared Mitchel, Ryan Westmoreland, and Casey Crosby?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
What up James! Mitchell looked very rusty in Arizona, and it's bothersome because he's the kind of prospect who really needs reps as a player who is quite raw for his age. There is still no official timetable (if any) on Westmoreland, but he was doing some hitting off a tee in the fall. As for Crosby, he's also firmly in that mystery category, and on a medical level, his elbow LOOKS fine, but he could never throw without pain. We won't know how he is until this spring. (Kevin Goldstein)
