2013-04-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)How is your scouting project for 2013 going?
(Marshall from Evansville)
(This question is in response to the first paragraph here: bit.ly/XZ1ta0)

So far I've discovered that Lance Berkman's bat has slowed from the left side, unless he's trying to hit hard line drives the other way on fastballs away. Either one seems likely! So, to answer your question, I'm having a hard time not creating narratives to explain results. I hope to get better as the year goes on. (Sam Miller)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)What High OBP guys are your favorite draft picks this year?
(PGT from Louisiana)
Joe Mauer is always a guy I like in AVG or OBP formats; he offers a lot of value through those categories at a tough position to fill. If he's healthy, Lance Berkman is a great OBP guy...and he's moving to a great park in a strong line-up. The health is a huge if, of course. (Mike Gianella)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better DH fit for Rays, Kendrys Morales or Lance Berkman and why?
(jlarsen from chicago)
Morales because there is more in the tank, but his cost will be higher so given their organization, Berkman is a more likely candidate. (Paul Sporer)
2012-09-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)Let's say you're on a game show, and behind one door is a car, and behind the other two doors are columns about how Lance Berkman looks like a steroid user. You are asked to pick a door at random, and you will win whatever's behind that door. After you pick the door, the host is required to open one of the doors you didn't pick and show you a column. You now can either stay with the door you picked initially or switch to the other unopened door. What do you do?
(Colin Wyers from Davenport, IA)
Great question, random reader! I know that the odds say I'm supposed to switch, but I REALLY don't want to see that column, so I probably just jump out the window. (Bill Parker)
2012-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where is Carlos Beltran's increased power production coming from? He can't possibly keep this up (because he's Carlos Beltran and will get injured at some point). And why are the Cardinal's occasionally throwing him into Center? Don't they know they risk angering the Injury Gods that way?
(Paul from DC)
Beltran has always been a great player and has shown 40-HR power before. So it's not like he's coming out of the blue here. But there's no way we could have expected this from a 35 year old player.

Maybe it's what the Cardinals do. Last year, they risked the injury gods by playing Lance Berkman in the outfield everyday and were rewarded with his best season in ages. Maybe that's what they're doing with Beltran this year. If I were him, though, I'd be a bit worried about my health next season. (Larry Granillo)
2012-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've read the occasional article or thread about the HOF chances of Carlos Beltran and Lance Berkman, but not about their teammate, Matt Holliday. At age 32, how close is he to entering serious, reasonable discussions on a viable HOF candidacy?
(Paul from DC)
The Beltran and Berkman HOF speculation makes sense. They're both well above average players who are near the end of their career. Holliday is still pretty young, but has certainly been around long enough to consider.

He's a great player. In 8+ seasons, Holliday already has 33.3 WARP. That's no slouch. If he can stay healthy well into his 30s (say 37 or 38) and put up steady numbers, he might have a case. But if he hits a steep decline at, say, 35, I'm not sure his career is long enough or with high enough peaks to be HOF-worthy.

Not that there's anything wrong with being a regular All-Star! (Larry Granillo)
2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)A question and a statement requiring a response: 1) Just how many cats do you have? 2) Equate each to a baseball player.
(mattymatty2000 from Portland, OR)
I have three cats. The oldest is Joey From the Bronx. The middle one is Tami Taylor. The youngest is Archer. (Not named after the TV show, though I do love the TV show. Named after Lew Archer. Her unofficial first name is Louise.)

Joey is Manny Ramirez, who grew up for some time in Washington Heights (we were living in Inwood when we got Joey). He used to be really good at what he did (murdering creatures smaller than him), and he might have some things left in the tank, but he's mostly a mascot now.

Tami is Lance Berkman -- slow, round, and goofy, but a surprisingly effective cat for all of that.

Archer is Billy Hamilton, young, full of vigor and cockiness. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2011-05-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dear Mr. R.J. Anderson What is the current value of Lance Berkman in FBB and what do you think I could get for him?
(DaPriceIsRight from Republic of Congo)
Depends on your league, but I would guess a decent haul. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-05-04 19:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on this? Hanley and carlos Pena for Jose Reyes and Lance Berkman. Thanks.
(mmaurer016 from tampa)
I don't like it. Carlos Pena gets hot for a week or two, but then goes in the tank for 3-4 weeks at a time. Unless he is hitting home runs, he's just not helping you. Meanwhile, Reyes and Berkman's only risk is health. If it were anyone but Pena, I'd be more excited but he's a three true outcome guy these days and the HR is the least likely of the outcome since August 2009. (Jason Collette (note time))
2010-11-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who ends up manning 1B for the Cubs next yr? Their focus seems to be on power for that spot but I think that lineup is in major need of OBP help( Berkman?), as well.
(Matt from Chicago)
It wouldn't surprise me if either Lance Berkman or Adam Dunn winds up there. Both will provide improved OBP and some power, though Dunn probably more than Berkman at this stage. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-11-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Provided he is reasonably healthy, I think we can see a bit of a statistical rebound from Berkman next yr. What type of slash line do you think we can expect from him?
(Matt from Chicago)
Not to be all cryptic but your answer lies in the first sentence of your question. Yes, I agree that if Lance Berkman is reasonably healthy, his numbers will be better than they were last year. I think that much is obvious. If we rephrase the question to be whether or not I think Lance Berkman will be reasonably healthy next year, then I would say no, no I do not think that will happen. I can see Berkman signing with the Cubs or the Tigers, and breaking down towards the end of the season, while being fairly banged up before that point. He'll hit around .275/.345/.445, which is about what he did this season, with slightly more pop. (Eric Seidman)
2010-10-12 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Lance Berkman done as a useful, everyday 1b? I think he might make a cheap option for teams in need of a 1b, provided he is reasonably healthy.
(Matt from Chicago)
Let's project a slight improvement on his overall season line for next year. Call it .260/.370/.425. That's kind of a Lyle Overbay type thing, and it seemed to work on second division teams okay. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Lance Berkman carrying a toothpick to the plate, do the Yanks put Montero in at DH when rosters expand?
(Jquinton82 from ny)
I think his future is at DH, and if the Yankees feel their lead is comfortable enough they may give him some at-bats there to see what he can do for them. He won't be able to get on the playoff roster without some DL loopholes though, so maybe they'll leave things as they are and hope Berkman can work his way out of it. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)why isn't Montero the DH solution the yanks need?
(workermonkey from CT)
Several reasons: he's not on the 40-man; he just started hitting and you'd like him to consolidate his success; there is no position you'd want to play him at, which means clogging up the roster; the need isn't desperate and there's no reason to start him heading for arbitration at 23 and free agency at 26/27. The Lance Berkman/Marcus Thames platoon should be sufficient. (Steven Goldman)
2010-03-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any word on how long Lance Berkman is likely to be out? I assume he'll start the year on the 15 day DL... Also, what is the earliest we can reasonable expect the Nats to call up Drew Storen this year? Chances on him being installed as the closer some time this year?
(Pat from NJ)
Berkman shouldn't be out for more than a week or two to start the season. All things considered, that's not so bad.

If Storen pitches well, expect him up in June or July. They drafted him partly because they thought he could be a fast mover, and it wouldn't shock me if he's only being sent down for service time reasons. (Shawn Hoffman)
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Houston's Ed Wade is slowly crafting together another championship team in Houston like he did in Philly? I see he drafted his catcher and shortstop of the future in Castro and Meier. It's like when he was in Philly and Rolen and Rollins were drafted. Then Mr. Wade added parts over the years until he reached the top. Thoughts?
(Rube from Philly)
It was briefly fashionable in sabermetric circles to deride the acquisition of Michael Bourn, but I don't mind at all the suggestion that Wade's accumulating up-the-middle talent, and nobody's laughing quite so hard now that Bourn seems to have come into his own. The question is, having bought himself time and credibility by giving it a go with what he inherited (to little point, predictably, but he tried), will the talent he's adding arrive in time to help the core he inherited? The answer to that should be a clear 'no,' not with Roy Oswalt talking about two more years, Lance Berkman showing signs of wear, and Carlos Lee heading into his age-34 season. Instead, the challenge is going to be whether Castro and Mier are the centerpieces of the next good Astros team... which good as they might be as prospects, isn't the same as saying they've got Tulo and Buster Posey. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)what do you think Lance Berkman's trajectory is going forward? Is he the type of player who won't age gracefully?
(dscala from manchester, NH )
No, I can see a very slow decline, comparable a bit to Jim Thome's very graceful long goodbye. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Ryan Howard's next 3 years (age 30-32) or Lance Berkman's (age 34-36)?
(Round from (Lightning))
Brutal call.

Berkman, who has further to fall. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)Eric, why am I not demanding to be traded? I know I'm from Houston, went to Rice, etc. but doesn't my team have the absolute worst future of any team in the majors? Terrible record, run differential, and oh yeah, worst farm system in the MLB!
(Lance Berkman from Houston, TX)
There is no way this is Lance Berkman. (Eric Seidman)
2009-06-03 15:00:00 (link to chat)Not a team related question, but one regarding individual players. How do you see these players ranking over the next five years: Lance Berkman, Vladimir Guerrero, Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Lee, Manny Ramirez. Thanks.
(Krams706 from Boston)
Wow, you named four 33-year-olds and a 37-year-old, and you want to know what their next five years look like? Sell now, because they're not going to be getting better, and in many cases -- I'm thinking Vlad and Lee, particularly -- I think the decline will be precipitous due to injuries and conditioning. If I had to pick one to own five years from now it would probably be Soriano because of his body type. PECOTA appears to agree, though it also puts in a good word for Berkman. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-11-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin: In his AFL column, Joe wrote: "Brett Wallace has great power, and reminds me a little of Lance Berkman with extra weight. He's an awkward third baseman with a stiff throwing motion, but the consensus is that he won't hurt you over there." I believe you (among many others) had previously stated that Wallace likely would not be able to stick at 3B. Has there been a change in the consensus? Or is this more of a case of "with a bat that good, you can deal with the limited defense at third"?
(Matt L. from Chicago)
Depends on who you talk to. I don't think he can stick there, but I understand why somebody would. He does have good fundamentals, soft hands and makes the plays he gets to. That said, he has, to use one of my favorite scouting terms, fall-down range. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-07-21 15:00:00 (link to chat)Longest home run you have ever seen in person? Mine has to be GlenAllen Hill's blast on top of the apartment building at Wrigley.
(warman from mount orab)
In person? Sammy Sosa's HR Derby shot in Milwaukee that went out the window. I saw Lance Berkman put on a show in college that if anyone from the NCAA had seen, they'd have banned composite bats right there. (Will Carroll)
2008-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Jeremy Hermida making the leap this year?
(Dan from NYC)
Didn't he already do that in the second half? He's a terrific hitter, probably going to end up somewhere between Shawn Green and Lance Berkman. Too bad no one will notice. (Joe Sheehan)
